Inferno X (M2) English Equivalent: Phantasmal Flames (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 6, 2026
Japanese Inferno X (M2) released September 26, 2025. Its English counterpart, Phantasmal Flames (ME02), followed on November 14, 2025.
The 49-day gap between them is the shortest confirmed localization window of any Mega Evolution set to date, shorter than M2a to Ascended Heroes (63 days), M4 to Chaos Rising (70 days), or M5 to Pitch Black (56 days). Every sampled M2 card has its English debut in ME02, making this one of the cleanest JP-to-EN mappings in the modern era. If you imported M2 boxes and are wondering which English product to match them against, it's Phantasmal Flames.
Set at a Glance
Here is how the two sets line up, sourced from Limitless TCG's M2 card list and Serebii's Phantasmal Flames index.
| JP: Inferno X (M2) | EN: Phantasmal Flames (ME02 / PFL) | |
|---|---|---|
| Set code | M2 | ME02 / PFL |
| Release date | September 26, 2025 | November 14, 2025 |
| JP-to-EN gap | 49 days | |
| Cards per pack | 5 | 10 |
| Packs per booster box | 30 | 36 |
| Cards per booster box | 150 | 360 |
| Language | Japanese | English |
| Tournament legality (as of Oct 2026) | JPN Standard | EN Standard |
One structural note: M2 is a standard expansion, not a High Class Pack like M2a (Mega Dream ex). That distinction matters for collectors. A High Class Pack shuffles a portion of its cards into other EN sets; M2 does not.
What you pull in an M2 box will appear in ME02 and ME02 only.
What's Different in the Box
The biggest practical difference is pack size and product format.
| Format | Contents | Observed floor (Oct 2026) | Cards total |
|---|---|---|---|
| JP M2 booster box | 30 packs × 5 cards | $122.00 USD | 150 |
| EN ME02 Elite Trainer Box (ETB) | 9 packs × 10 cards + accessories | $154.99 USD | 90 (from packs) |
| EN ME02 Booster Bundle | 6 packs × 10 cards | $84.99 USD | 60 |
| EN ME02 booster box | 36 packs × 10 cards | $389.99 USD | 360 |
The JP floor of $122 for 150 cards works out to roughly $0.81 per card. The EN booster box floor of $390 for 360 cards is approximately $1.08 per card. Importing M2 boxes is currently the cheaper option by card count, assuming you can read Japanese text cards or are grading them.
The Starter Set Cards in ME02: What JP Importers Miss
This is the single most important difference between an M2 import and buying ME02.
The JP Mega Starter Set MEGA released alongside M2 in September 2025 as two separate fixed 60-card decks: one built around Mega Gengar ex, the other around Mega Diancie ex. In Japan, those specific cards existed only in the Starter Set, a non-random product you buy for the deck. They were not pullable from M2 booster packs.
Phantasmal Flames (ME02) incorporated the Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex from those Starter Sets directly into the English booster set. EN collectors can pull them from ME02 packs. JP importers who want those cards and who only bought M2 boxes have a gap in their collection that requires tracking down the JP Starter Set separately.
The English ETB is the most popular entry point for ME02. It includes nine packs, accessories, and carries the standard MSRP that makes it the first product to sell out at launch.
Japanese or English: Which Should You Buy?
Price per card
At current observed prices, JP M2 boxes run $0.81 per card at the floor, versus $1.08 per card for an EN booster box. If per-card cost is the deciding factor and you are comfortable with Japanese text, M2 imports offer better value. Both are well above their respective MSRPs because the Mega Evolution era has attracted strong secondary demand.
Play legality
Japanese Inferno X (M2) cards are legal in JPN Standard format only: not legal in English Standard play. If you compete or judge at English-language events, you need ME02 (Phantasmal Flames) cards.
This also applies to grading: PSA and CGC accept both languages, but Japanese and English prints command different buyer pools and typically sell at different price points.
Language and set completeness
Collecting the complete M2 set in Japanese means buying M2 boxes plus the JP Starter Set MEGA to get Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex. Collecting ME02 in English gives you access to all of those cards from booster packs alone. For anyone building a complete set of Phantasmal Flames, the English route involves fewer separate purchases.
Collectors who want both languages for grading or display purposes can find listings for the JP Starter Set MEGA from independent shops, or pick up the EN ETB for the English counterpart cards.
The Booster Bundle is the most accessible English entry format: six packs at $84.99, no accessories, and a lower per-product commitment than the ETB or booster box. It is a good starting point if you want to test the ME02 pull rate before committing to a full box.

FAQ
What is the English equivalent of Inferno X M2?
Phantasmal Flames (ME02 / PFL), released November 14, 2025. Every sampled M2 card appears first in ME02. The JP-to-EN gap was 49 days.
Why does ME02 have more cards than M2?
ME02 incorporates the JP Mega Starter Set MEGA cards (Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex) into the main English booster set. Those cards were not in M2 booster packs in Japan, only in the separate fixed Starter Set product.
Are M2 Japanese cards legal in English play?
No. Japanese M2 cards are legal in JPN Standard format only. For English-language competitive play you need ME02 (Phantasmal Flames) cards.
Is M2 cheaper per card than ME02?
At observed October 2026 prices: the JP M2 box floor works out to roughly $0.81 per card, versus approximately $1.08 per card for the EN booster box. JP is currently cheaper per card, though prices from independent shops vary.
Do I need the JP Starter Set MEGA if I already have M2 boxes?
Yes, if you want Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex in Japanese. Those cards came from the JP Starter Set MEGA, not from M2 booster packs. EN collectors get them from ME02 packs.
