Pokémon X vs Y: Version Differences and Which to Buy (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Buy Pokémon X if Mega Charizard X (Fire/Dragon) or Xerneas matters to you. Buy Pokémon Y if you want Yveltal or Mega Charizard Y, or if you want to spend less: Y copies typically list lower at independent retro shops right now.
October 12, 2026 marks 13 years since Pokémon X and Y launched worldwide. They were the first core series games to release on the same day in every region, opening Generation 6 in the Kalos region on Nintendo 3DS.
Both games tell the same story. The version difference comes down to which legendary lives in your cartridge and which Mega Stones you can access without trading.

Where Pokémon X wins
Mega Charizard X: the only Dragon-type Charizard in a main series game
Charizard has two Mega Evolutions, one per version. Pokémon X gives you Charizardite X, which turns Charizard from Fire/Flying into Fire/Dragon. It is the only point in any mainline Pokémon game where Charizard is a Dragon type, and that distinction drives most of the collector and competitive interest in the X version specifically.
Mega Charizard X also hits harder on the physical side, with a base Attack stat of 130 versus Mega Charizard Y's 104. For in-game play, both forms are strong, but X has the showier Mega transformation. If Charizard is part of your team plan, that single factor usually settles the question.
Xerneas and the Fairy type
Xerneas is a pure Fairy-type legendary and one of the first Fairy-type Pokémon introduced when the type debuted in Generation 6. Its signature move, Geomancy, doubles Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed in two turns. Xerneas is locked to X and cannot be obtained in Y without a trade partner.
Where Pokémon Y wins
Yveltal: a strong legendary for any team
Yveltal (Dark/Flying) has a base stat total of 680, matching Xerneas. Its signature move, Oblivion Wing, restores 75% of the damage dealt as HP. That sustain makes it a flexible pick for any team that wants a Dark-type legendary anchor.
Pokémon Y also includes the Jaw Fossil, which revives into Tyrunt and eventually Tyrantrum (Rock/Dragon). Pokémon X has the Sail Fossil instead, which revives into Amaura and Aurorus (Rock/Ice). Neither fossil Pokémon is version-locked after trading, but you can only get the Jaw Fossil directly from a Y cartridge.
The price gap is real
Pokémon X lists $10 to $20 higher than Y at most independent retro shops right now (observed October 12, 2026). The gap likely reflects Mega Charizard X demand rather than any gameplay advantage. Y delivers the same story, the same Kalos region, and the same 72-hour post-game at a lower entry price.
For anyone who does not have a strong preference between the two legendaries, Y is the straightforward better value in 2026.
The deciding question
Ask yourself one thing: do you care about Mega Charizard X?
If yes, buy X. Charizardite X is exclusive to the cartridge, and trading a Mega Stone between games requires two copies and a local-play connection.
If Charizard is not on your team plan, or if you plan to use a different Mega, the game is functionally identical in both versions.
For players returning to Generation 6 after a gap, the version does not change the pacing, the rival, the gym leaders, or the Elite Four. Kalos is the same region in both games. The Fairy type, Mega Evolutions (except the version-locked ones), and the core Pokédex are all accessible regardless of which cart you put in the 3DS.
Collectors keeping sealed copies: X sealed boxes have been selling above Y sealed boxes at most shops we checked (October 12, 2026). That premium is likely to hold as long as Mega Charizard X retains its cultural footprint. If you are buying to open and play, that premium is not relevant.
As a gift or holiday pick
Pokémon X and Y make solid retro gifts for any Pokémon fan who still has a 3DS, 2DS, or New 3DS XL in the house. The 3DS eShop closed in March 2023, so physical cartridges are now the only way to own these games. A boxed copy is more giftable than a digital purchase ever was.
For a 8-to-12-year-old stepping into Pokémon for the first time, either version is accessible: Kalos has one of the more straightforward stories in the series, with a shorter early-game. For an adult collector revisiting the series: X for the Charizard X angle, Y for the better value. Either pairs well with a Switch Pokémon game as a two-part gift.
More seasonal picks are in the DexHaul holiday gift guide.
The Bandai Scale World Kalos Region Set ships 11 pre-painted 1/20-scale figures from Pokémon X and Y, including Serena, Calem, and several Kalos-region Pokémon. It pairs naturally with either game copy as a display piece.
FAQ
Can you trade Pokémon between X and Y?
Yes. X and Y are fully compatible via local wireless and the GTS.
Version-exclusive Pokémon and Mega Stones can be obtained through trading. The only thing you cannot trade is the cover legendary already caught by the other player's cartridge.
Which version has Mega Charizard X?
Pokémon X. The Charizardite X Mega Stone is exclusive to X, giving Charizard the Fire/Dragon typing during Mega Evolution. Pokémon Y includes Charizardite Y, which keeps the Fire/Flying typing and boosts Special Attack to 159.
Do Pokémon X and Y run on Nintendo Switch?
No. The Switch does not accept 3DS cartridges. Pokémon caught in X and Y can be moved to Switch titles through Pokémon Bank and then Pokémon HOME, but the games themselves require a 3DS family handheld.
Which fossil Pokémon is in X vs Y?
Pokémon X has the Sail Fossil, which revives into Amaura and Aurorus (Rock/Ice). Pokémon Y has the Jaw Fossil, which revives into Tyrunt and Tyrantrum (Rock/Dragon). Both fossils are found in Glittering Cave and are version-locked.
Are Pokémon X and Y still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, for the Generation 6 story and the Mega Evolution mechanic. The 3DS eShop closed in March 2023, so physical cartridges are the only way to play X and Y without owning an existing digital copy. Prices have stabilised well below the original $39.99 MSRP for used copies.
