Battle Styles vs Fusion Strike Booster Box: Which to Buy (2026)

Buy Battle Styles if you want the best price per pack in the Sword & Shield era; buy Fusion Strike if you are specifically targeting Mew VMAX or Mewtwo VMAX, the two most sought-after Alt Arts the SWSH era produced.

The two sets launched just eight months apart in 2021, both at the same $3.99 MSRP per pack, both containing 36 packs per booster box. The price gap between them today is almost entirely explained by two cards. If neither of those cards is your target, Battle Styles is the stronger buy.

Where Battle Styles wins

Price per pack is the lowest of any SWSH booster box

At around $141 on the low end observed today, Battle Styles works out to roughly $3.92 per pack, which is below the original $3.99 MSRP. No sealed Sword & Shield booster box from the main series trades cheaper at this point. That makes it the entry point for anyone opening SWSH product for the first time, or building a set-completion goal on a defined budget.

Fusion Strike's $315 low end delivers the same 36 packs at $8.75 each. You pay a 124% premium per pack for the right to pull from a deeper set with higher-ceiling chase cards.

Three mechanics, three separate chase targets

Battle Styles introduced all three battle-style Pokémon types in one release: Single Strike (Urshifu), Rapid Strike (Urshifu), and Fusion Strike (Oricorio GX). Completing the full set means tracking Alt Arts across three distinct card pools. The Umbreon VMAX Alt Art, the Single Strike Urshifu VMAX Alt Art, and the Rapid Strike Urshifu VMAX are each independently desirable, which makes a full Battle Styles chase run more varied than a single-target box.

There is also an accessible alternative path. The Battle Styles Elite Trainer Box still trades on the secondary market and shares the same pack pool. If you want to open Battle Styles packs without committing to a full booster box, the ETB is a viable option.

Less concentration of value in two cards

Fusion Strike's collector value is heavily concentrated. Mew VMAX and Mewtwo VMAX together account for the majority of the set's premium over original MSRP. A box that misses both of those leaves you with cards from a 264-card set where most of the remaining chase targets trade for less than Battle Styles equivalents.

Battle Styles spreads its value more evenly. The Umbreon VMAX Alt Art is the ceiling, but the Urshifu VMAX Alt Arts, the Tyranitar V Alt Art, and the Secret Rare cards each carry independent demand. More anchors means less variance per box session.

Where Fusion Strike wins

Mew VMAX is the most sought-after SWSH Alt Art

The Mew VMAX Alt Art from Fusion Strike consistently holds the highest secondary-market position among SWSH-era full-art pulls. It pairs the original Pokémon #151 in a full-bleed chromatic design that appeals well beyond the SWSH collector base. Any sealed Fusion Strike box carries a legitimate pull target with the widest possible buyer demand behind it.

Battle Styles cannot match that single-card ceiling. The Umbreon VMAX Alt Art is excellent, but its secondary market depth is narrower.

The largest English SWSH expansion

Fusion Strike contains 264 cards, making it the largest English Sword & Shield expansion set. No other SWSH main-series set comes close. For collectors working toward a complete SWSH run, Fusion Strike is the single biggest checklist item: more unique pulls per box, more time to complete, and more chances for unexpected Secret Rare pulls that do not appear elsewhere.

Two independently valuable chase targets

Mew VMAX and Mewtwo VMAX are separate cards with separate demand from separate collector bases. The Mew VMAX targets the Mew collector market; the Mewtwo VMAX targets the Mewtwo collector market, which is one of the deepest in all of Pokémon TCG. Missing one does not eliminate the value of the box session entirely.

The deciding question

The right box comes down to what you are willing to pay per pack, and which specific Alt Arts you are after.

Buy Battle Styles if: you are opening SWSH packs for the first time, you want maximum pack volume for your budget, you are collecting all three battle-style mechanics, or you are specifically targeting the Umbreon VMAX Alt Art or the Urshifu VMAX Alt Arts. The Battle Styles ETB is also an option if a full booster box is too large a commitment at once.

Buy Fusion Strike if: you want the Mew VMAX or Mewtwo VMAX (and are prepared to pay the premium for that access), you are completing the full SWSH era and need the largest set, or you prioritize a deeper card pool over a lower per-pack cost.

Neither box is the right Q4 gift purchase unless the recipient specifically collects Sword & Shield sealed product. Both trade at secondary-market prices with no retail anchor.

FAQ

Is Battle Styles still worth opening in 2026?

At around $141 per box at current observed lows, Battle Styles is the best price per pack of any main-series Sword & Shield booster box. It is worth opening if you are chasing the Umbreon VMAX Alt Art, the Urshifu VMAX Alt Arts, or building a budget SWSH set.

Why is Fusion Strike so much more expensive than Battle Styles?

Almost entirely because of Mew VMAX and Mewtwo VMAX. Those two cards drive nearly all of the premium above original MSRP. Battle Styles launched at the same price point in 2021 but lacks a card with equivalent demand at the top of its pull list.

Did Battle Styles introduce Fusion Strike Pokémon?

Yes. Battle Styles was the first SWSH set to include Single Strike, Rapid Strike, and Fusion Strike mechanic Pokémon. Fusion Strike then expanded the Fusion Strike subset with Mew VMAX, Mewtwo VMAX, and Gengar VMAX as its highest-value pulls.

Which box has more cards?

Fusion Strike has 264 cards plus a deep Secret Rare pool, making it the largest English SWSH expansion. Battle Styles has 163 cards plus its Secret Rares. Both booster boxes contain 36 packs at the same original MSRP per pack.

Are there cheaper ways to get Battle Styles or Fusion Strike packs?

The Battle Styles ETB is one alternative for smaller quantities of Battle Styles packs. For Fusion Strike, individual booster packs from independent sellers can be an option, though the per-pack cost at loose pack prices varies. DexHaul's booster boxes collection lists current in-stock options across both sets from multiple sellers.
