Where Evolving Skies wins

The Eeveelution effect

Evolving Skies is the only mainline English SWSH set built around Eeveelutions and Dragon types. The Umbreon VMAX alternate art, Espeon VMAX alternate art, Leafeon VMAX alternate art, and Glaceon VMAX alternate art are among the most widely recognised chase cards in the entire Sword and Shield era.

That recognition drove the set's secondary value well above MSRP not long after release, and it has held there. Pull one of those four alternate arts from a sealed box and the value calculation shifts significantly in your favor. If Eevee and its evolutions are the reason you are buying, no other SWSH booster box offers a substitute. The Japanese equivalent, Eevee Heroes (S6a), carries the same pull list and is covered in a separate import guide.

Concentrated secret rare pool

With 12 secret rares compared to Fusion Strike's 30, Evolving Skies has a considerably smaller secret rare pool. A narrower pool does not guarantee a specific hit, but it does mean each 36-pack box covers a higher share of the possible secret rare outputs.

Collectors who open boxes with a short target list tend to favor a concentrated pool. Every pack in Evolving Skies has a chance at one of those 12 secrets, and 8 of the 12 are full-art or alternate-art cards with meaningful secondary market recognition.

Where Fusion Strike wins

The largest SWSH expansion ever printed

Fusion Strike's 284-card set list made it the largest single English Sword and Shield expansion at launch, a record it still holds within the SWSH era. Thirty secret rares spread across Mew VMAX, Gengar VMAX, Deoxys VMAX, and a deep bench of full-arts and alternate arts give each box significantly more variety in its higher rarity slots.

The set introduced the Fusion Strike Battle Style alongside Single Strike and Rapid Strike, and it is the only SWSH set where all three styles appear together. Collectors building a complete SWSH run often cite Fusion Strike as the box with the best content-per-pack variety. The Japanese set that maps to Fusion Strike is Fusion Arts (S8).

Lower secondary floor

At observed prices of roughly $1,000 to $1,400 USD as of October 19, 2026, Fusion Strike costs significantly less than Evolving Skies for a sealed booster box. The Evolving Skies premium is almost entirely driven by three to four Eeveelution alternate arts. Strip those from the comparison and both sets occupy a similar value tier by pack math. Fusion Strike's larger initial print run left more sealed supply on the secondary market, keeping its floor more accessible.

The deciding question

The two sets answer different questions. Evolving Skies is for the Eeveelution collector, the alternate-art hunter, and the buyer who wants the most trophy-tier SWSH box regardless of price. If a specific card is on your list, the Umbreon VMAX alt art or Espeon VMAX alt art, Evolving Skies is the only booster box that can deliver it.

Fusion Strike is for the SWSH completionist, the player turned sealed collector, and the buyer who wants genuine variety per pack without paying the Eeveelution markup. Its 30 secret rares include the Mew VMAX alternate art and Gengar VMAX alternate art, both legitimate chase cards with their own collector base, just not at the same price tier as the Eeveelution alts.

For a gift, Evolving Skies is the more recognizable box to anyone in the Pokémon community. For a first sealed SWSH box at a lower entry cost, Fusion Strike makes practical sense.
