LEGO SMART Play 72165: Umbreon vs. Garchomp Contents (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 6, 2026
LEGO SMART Play 72165 contains 831 bricks to build Umbreon and Garchomp, plus 2 SMART NFC tags. MSRP is $79.99 (lego.com). The set released August 2026 as part of the SMART Play sub-line.
SMART Bricks and a charging dock are NOT included.
Those components come only in the All-in-One set 72167. Without them, 72165 builds two display figures and provides the NFC tags, but the battle lights and sounds won't activate.
What's inside LEGO SMART Play 72165
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| LEGO bricks | 831 | Builds both Umbreon and Garchomp figures |
| Built Pokémon figures | 2 | Umbreon and Garchomp, assembled from included bricks |
| SMART NFC tags | 2 | Each activates a different battle scenario when placed on a SMART Brick |
| SMART Bricks | 0 | Not included; required for interactive play (found in 72167) |
| Charging dock | 0 | Not included; found only in the All-in-One set 72167 |
The two built figures stand as display pieces whether or not you own SMART Bricks. Umbreon and Garchomp each assemble from the included bricks into a poseable battle-ready form. The NFC tags sit alongside them, ready to slot onto SMART Bricks if you have them.
831 pieces is more than 72167's 751. The higher piece count reflects more complex builds for Umbreon and Garchomp, not additional electronic components. Ages 10+ versus 72167's 8+, which aligns with the more intricate assembly.

There is no LEGO-published promotional or sale price at launch. The SMART Play line launched at fixed MSRPs and has not yet been discounted at major US retail.
How 72165 compares to other SMART Play sets
| Set | MSRP | Pieces | SMART Bricks included | Age |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 72163 Mewtwo's Lab Break | $69.99 | N/A | No | 10+ |
| 72164 Training House with Pikachu | $69.99 | N/A | No | 7+ |
| 72165 Umbreon vs. Garchomp | $79.99 | 831 | No | 10+ |
| 72167 Charizard vs. Jolteon (All-in-One) | $119.99 | 751 | Yes (2 bricks + charger) | 8+ |
The comparison table surfaces the core trade-off directly. 72165 has more pieces than 72167 at $40 less. The price difference between these two sets is the bundled SMART Bricks and charging dock in 72167, not the complexity of the builds.
72163 and 72164 sit at the same $69.99 tier and also lack SMART Bricks. Their "N/A" piece counts reflect simpler builds with fewer bricks.
72165 is the largest non-All-in-One set in the line at 831 pieces, giving it the most substantial display presence of the expansion sets. See the full 72167 fact-sheet for a complete breakdown of the All-in-One components.

Who it's for, and who should skip it
Right buy for existing SMART Play owners
If you or a child already own 72167, the SMART Bricks from that set slot directly into 72165. The NFC tags unlock two new battle scenarios. 72165 adds Umbreon and Garchomp to a lineup that currently only includes Charizard and Jolteon at this build scale.
Right buy for Umbreon and Garchomp fans as a display set
The brick-built figures stand independently. As a desk or shelf display, 72165 works exactly as intended without any electronics. At 831 pieces, the builds are among the most detailed in the SMART Play line.
Skip if you need a complete interactive experience out of the box
Without SMART Bricks, the NFC tags have nothing to trigger. A buyer expecting full lights-and-sounds battle play from a single $79.99 purchase will be disappointed. That experience requires 72167 first, or both sets together at a combined $199.98 MSRP.
For a Q4 gift, the safest pairing is 72167 plus 72165 together, which makes it clear which set provides the electronics. Check the full LEGO Pokémon buyer's guide for a complete view of the line, including the smaller expansion sets at $14.99 to $29.99 for younger ages.
