Houndoom Collector's Guide 2026: The Johto Dark-Type With Three Distinct TCG Arcs
By Dexhaul Team · September 16, 2026
Houndoom runs one of the more interesting collector arcs in the Johto catalog.
The Dark/Fire dual-type debuted in Gold and Silver, and its TCG history has three genuinely separate chapters: a Johto founding era built on scarce e-Card prints, a Mega Evolution window in XY BREAKthrough, and a 2025 return via the Team Rocket arc in Scarlet and Violet. Each chapter has its own ceiling card, its own collector audience, and its own price floor. This guide covers one chapter at a time, then lands on the best entry points available right now.
The Johto Founding Cards: Neo Revelation and Aquapolis
Houndoom's first significant English print arrived in Neo Revelation (2001) as the holo rare at 8/64. That card now trades raw around $430 and climbs well above $1,800 in graded condition, driven by the same structural shortage that lifts every Neo-era holo.
The more practical Johto-era target is Aquapolis (2003).
Aquapolis gave Houndoom two slots: the standard rare at 14/147 and a holofoil entry in the H-numbered subset. The 14/147 raw copy trades around $76 today, accessible for an early-2000s card with genuine collector demand.
The Aquapolis H-subset carried a smaller print run than the standard set. A BGS 9 copy of the holofoil H11/H32 currently lists above $3,600. That gap between the two Aquapolis Houndoom versions, from the same set and same release window, is the defining feature of e-Card era collecting.
For collectors entering the Johto chapter, the Aquapolis 14/147 is the right anchor. It sits in a price range where raw condition still matters, graded copies exist, and the card has clear vintage provenance.
The Mega Evolution Window: M Houndoom EX in XY BREAKthrough
Houndoom is one of the fewer Johto Pokémon to receive a Mega Evolution, which gave it a dedicated two-card run in XY BREAKthrough (2015).
M Houndoom EX occupies two separate slots in that set. The standard holo version at 22/162 trades in the $21 to $23 range raw. The Full Art Ultra Rare at 154/162 sits between $48 and $60 depending on condition and seller.
The Full Art's artwork is the more sought-after print. It shows Mega Houndoom against a dramatic background with significantly more visual presence than the standard holo.
The Mega arc sits between the vintage chapter and the modern Team Rocket chapter in collector interest. BREAKthrough was a large print run set, so raw copies are plentiful. The Full Art is the version most Houndoom-focused collectors display as the Mega era centerpiece.
There is no VMAX or VSTAR for Houndoom in the SWSH era. The Mega EX is the highest-tier card from the period between Aquapolis and the modern SV sets, which creates a clean ladder: Aquapolis standard, Aquapolis holofoil, M Houndoom EX standard, M Houndoom EX Full Art.
Team Rocket's Houndoom: The Modern Arc
The 2025 card that most Houndoom collectors are watching is "Team Rocket's Houndoom" 191/182 from SV10 Destined Rivals.
The 191/182 numbering places it above the base set count, in the extended rare section of the set. The card explicitly frames Houndoom as part of the Team Rocket organization, a narrative callback that resonates with collectors who grew up with the WOTC era.
A PSA 9 graded copy is currently at $30. The raw version from secondary market listings is around $21.
The Dark Houndoom (229) holofoil is a related piece in this thematic arc. The "229" in the listing references Houndoom's National Dex number, distinguishing it from standard set numbering. At $47.94, it occupies a mid-tier position between the Trainer Gallery holos (under $5 CAD) and the Aquapolis vintage floor.
Collectors building a thematic Team Rocket or Dark-type Houndoom shelf will treat these two modern cards as the contemporary bookends alongside the vintage Neo and Aquapolis prints.
Entry Points for 2026
If you want to start collecting Houndoom without committing to the vintage tier, three products make sense right now.
The Houndoom ex Battle Deck at $9.99 is the cheapest sealed TCG product in the current catalogue featuring a playable Houndoom. It ships as a ready-to-play 60-card deck. It is not a premium collector piece, but it is a legitimate entry into the character with actual gameplay value.
For the Trainer Gallery holo, Houndoom TG10/TG30 from the SWSH era trades at CA$4.40. It is not a chase card, but it is the most accessible foil Houndoom single in the catalogue and sits well on a display shelf.
The Pokémon fit plush ($20) is the non-TCG path. Pokémon fit figures are the seated-pose soft goods line from the Pokémon Center Japan catalog, sized consistently at around 5 inches.
Houndoom's fit version uses the same compact seated design as the rest of the line. It is an importer item, not a Western retail stock piece.
What Makes the Houndoom Collection Distinct
The collector case for Houndoom rests on one structural fact: it is the only Dark/Fire dual-type in Gen 2 with a Mega Evolution.
That Mega form means the BREAKthrough cards are not just vintage singles. They represent a completed mechanic arc: Houndoom had a Mega, it was printed as a full EX set, and that mechanic is now retired. The ceiling on the Full Art M Houndoom EX (154/162) at $48 to $60 is unusually modest for a Mega Full Art from a major XY set, which some collectors read as an undervalued position relative to comparable Mega EX Full Arts from the same era.
The Aquapolis H11/H32 holofoil sits in a tier of its own. The e-Card era suffered from distribution problems in North America that left Aquapolis notoriously underpopulated.
The standard 14/147 at $76 raw reflects that scarcity in a range collectors can still access. The graded H-subset copies reflect it at a level where only serious vintage specialists operate.
And the SV10 Destined Rivals card brings Houndoom explicitly into the Team Rocket narrative for the first time in the modern SV era. That thematic thread across three decades of TCG history, from the WOTC e-Card era through Mega EX to the 2025 Team Rocket arc, is what drives the character's collector interest beyond simple character popularity.
