Crown Zenith and VSTAR Universe are two releases from the same moment in Pokémon TCG history, but they are built for different collectors with different goals.

Crown Zenith is the final English Sword & Shield set. VSTAR Universe is its Japanese counterpart. On paper, they cover similar ground: both are premium capstone releases loaded with chase cards and special subsets.

In practice, the card pools, the product structures, and the collecting priorities are meaningfully different. Understanding those differences is how you decide which one to buy in 2026, and whether both are worth your attention.

What Crown Zenith Actually Is

Crown Zenith (SWSH12.5) released in January 2023 as the final English Sword & Shield expansion. It is a subset release: no new booster set mechanics, just a concentrated card selection built around the era's premium pull targets. The set has 159 cards in the main list plus a 70-card premium subset called the Galarian Gallery.

The Galarian Gallery is where Crown Zenith gets its lasting collector value. These 70 cards feature artwork inspired by the natural habitats of Galar region Pokémon, rendered in a style that leans closer to illustration than the standard SWSH card aesthetic. GG cards include Radiant Pokémon and several of the era's most sought-after VSTAR and VMAX forms.

Here is the critical detail most buyers miss: Galarian Gallery cards are product-locked. They appear only in Booster Bundles, Collection Tins, and specific collection boxes. They are not in Elite Trainer Box packs.

If you buy a Crown Zenith ETB expecting to hit GG cards, you will not find them. The ETB gives you full access to the main 159-card list, including the Shiny Pokémon and VSTAR cards, but the GG subset requires dedicated products.

The Regidrago and Regieleki V Collection Box is an example of the Crown Zenith product structure: a dedicated box built around specific featured cards, giving access to the GG packs alongside standard Crown Zenith packs and a promo card. At $120.00, it is one of the more accessible GG entry points currently available through independent sellers.

What VSTAR Universe Is

VSTAR Universe (S12a) released in Japan in December 2022, roughly a month before Crown Zenith landed in English. It is Japan's version of a capstone SWSH set, but the card pool is not identical. VSTAR Universe draws from across the entire Sword & Shield era and includes SAR (Special Art Rare) cards that have no Crown Zenith equivalent.

SAR cards in VSTAR Universe use full-bleed illustrative artwork that typically commands a premium on secondary markets. The most notable: Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon, Mewtwo, and Espeon all have SARs exclusive to VSTAR Universe.

These do not exist in any English product.

If those specific card arts are the target, VSTAR Universe is the only path.

VSTAR Universe also has a different pack structure. Unlike Crown Zenith's product-gating, a VSTAR Universe booster box (20 packs, 10 cards each) pulls from the full set including its premium tiers. There is no subset access issue to navigate.

The Products: What Is Available Right Now

Crown Zenith has a range of current market prices that reflect its status as a completed set. The ETB sits at $325.75 through Common Lands; the Pokémon Center exclusive ETB Plus (with additional content) runs higher. The Booster Bundle, which is one of the primary GG access vehicles, is currently available at $279.95 through Hobbiesville.

The Booster Bundle is the most direct way to target Galarian Gallery cards in Crown Zenith. Six packs from the GG pool, plus the usual Crown Zenith packs. If GG cards are what you are after, the Bundle is more efficient than the ETB at this price point.

At the high end, the Crown Zenith ETB Plus (Pokémon Center exclusive) reaches $539.99 through 763 Collectibles. This version included additional premium accessories and content not in the standard ETB, making it the collector's choice for completionists.

Which One Should You Buy?

Buy Crown Zenith if Galarian Gallery cards are your goal and you want English product. The Booster Bundle is the right format for GG targeting; the ETB is the right format if you want to sample the full main set without paying the GG premium. Collection Boxes built around specific Pokémon (like the Regidrago/Regieleki box) give you a focused entry into both tiers.

Buy VSTAR Universe if you want SAR cards that have no English equivalent. Pikachu SAR, Charizard SAR, Umbreon SAR: these exist only in Japanese product.

The booster box at $229.99 gives you direct access to the full VSTAR Universe card pool with no subset gating. It is a cleaner pull-targeting experience at a lower price point than Crown Zenith's premium formats.

Buy both if you are building a complete SWSH era collection. These sets are genuinely complementary, not redundant.

Crown Zenith covers the English completionist angle. VSTAR Universe covers the Japanese exclusive SAR tier. Neither fully replaces the other for a collector who wants the SWSH era represented at its highest print quality in both markets.

One practical note: VSTAR Universe cards are in Japanese. If you play the game, they are not tournament-legal in English-language events. If you collect for display or for the artwork, that distinction does not matter.

Why These Sets Still Move in 2026

The Sword & Shield era is three to four years removed from its release window, yet Crown Zenith and VSTAR Universe continue to trade at meaningful price points. The reason is simple: the Galarian Gallery and SAR tiers represent print run caps that will not be reopened. TPCi does not reprint completed Sword & Shield sets in new products; neither does the Japanese side for VSTAR Universe.

For collectors focused on long-term acquisition rather than immediate pack opening, these sets are one of the few places in the modern card game where a fixed supply is confirmed and the secondary market price is still within reach of a casual budget for entry-level products. The ETB Plus and booster box prices reflect the premium end. The Collection Boxes and lower-priced formats remain accessible for collectors who want a sample of the era without committing to the flagship products.
