Obsidian Flames vs Paradox Rift: Which to Buy (2026)

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Obsidian Flames booster box, sealed, 36 packs
Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Obsidian Flames Booster Box · $400.00 USD

Buy Obsidian Flames if you are chasing Charizard ex. Buy Paradox Rift if you want more Secret Rare variety at a lower price point.

Both are Scarlet & Violet era booster boxes with 36 packs and 10 cards per pack. They released just three months apart in 2023 and both remain available through independent shops. The difference comes down to pull diversity, the depth of each set's Secret Rare pool, and what kind of collector you are.

Neither is a bad buy. This guide lays out the real tradeoff so you can decide before you spend.

Where Obsidian Flames wins

Obsidian Flames is the stronger pick when you have a specific target in mind and Charizard ex is it.

The Charizard ex pull

Obsidian Flames features the black Tera Crystal Charizard ex as its Special Illustration Rare (#228/197). This card became one of the most recognizable SIR prints in the entire Scarlet & Violet era: the solid black border with the Tera Crystal ring is a look no other Charizard card matches. If you want the best Charizard ex from this generation, this is the box to open.

The set also has Tyranitar ex and Revavroom ex as notable pulls, plus a standard Charizard ex ex card and its Two-Star Rare variant. Opening a box gives you multiple Charizard versions to chase at different rarity tiers.

A focused Secret Rare pool

Obsidian Flames has just 33 Secret Rares across its 230 total cards. That concentration matters.

With fewer Secret Rare slots, each one carries more weight per box. You are chasing a smaller pool, which means when you hit a Secret Rare, the odds that it is the Charizard ex SIR are meaningfully higher than in a set with 84 secret slots.

Paradox Rift dilutes its pull excitement across a much wider spread of cards. Obsidian Flames does not.

The Tera Crystal aesthetic

Obsidian Flames is the first SV set to build its identity around a full lineup of Tera-type Pokémon ex, each with the crystal-ring border that signals their typed Tera form. Collectors who want the defining look of the SV TCG's early era in one box will find it here.

Where Paradox Rift wins

Paradox Rift makes more sense when you want more total pull potential, lower cost, and a mechanically richer set to explore.

84 Secret Rares vs 33

This is the single biggest difference between the two sets. Paradox Rift has 84 Secret Rares across 266 total cards: more than twice the variety of Obsidian Flames.

That spread means each box you open has a higher chance of producing a Secret Rare you have not seen before. If you are buying multiple boxes or building a display collection of SV-era pulls, Paradox Rift gives you far more distinct outcomes per dollar spent.

The tradeoff is that no single card dominates Paradox Rift the way Charizard ex dominates Obsidian Flames. The excitement is distributed rather than concentrated.

Roaring Moon and Iron Valiant: two chase targets instead of one

Paradox Rift introduced the Ancient and Future Pokémon mechanic. Ancient Pokémon are prehistoric variants of modern species: Roaring Moon is an ancient Salamence, Sandy Shocks an ancient Magnezone, Flutter Mane an ancient Misdreavus. Future Pokémon are tech-enhanced forms: Iron Valiant is a future Gardevoir and Gallade hybrid, Iron Hands a future Hariyama, Iron Moth a future Volcarona.

The top two SIRs are Roaring Moon ex and Iron Valiant ex. Unlike Obsidian Flames, where Charizard is the clear number-one target, Paradox Rift players and collectors often disagree on which of these two is the better pull. Two high-value targets in one set means opening boxes is less predictable and, for many collectors, more fun.

A lower price floor

Observed on October 5, 2026, Paradox Rift booster boxes start around $205 USD at independent shops versus around $280 USD for Obsidian Flames. Over multiple boxes, that gap adds up. If you are buying for variety rather than a single specific card, your budget goes further with Paradox Rift.

The deciding question

Both sets are worth buying. The right choice depends on why you are opening the box.

You want the iconic Charizard ex

Obsidian Flames is the clear answer. The black Tera Crystal Charizard ex SIR does not appear in any other standard SV booster set.

Its smaller Secret Rare pool means fewer competing targets when you open. This is the box for Charizard collectors and anyone who wants a single-goal box-opening session.

You want variety and value

Paradox Rift is the better pick if you enjoy the experience of pulling cards you have not seen and want more diverse outcomes per dollar. With 84 Secret Rares and two top-tier SIR targets, no two Paradox Rift box openings feel the same.

You are buying as a gift or for a new collector

Paradox Rift's lower price point and split between Ancient and Future Pokémon makes it the more accessible entry for someone new to the SV era. Obsidian Flames is a strong gift for a Charizard fan specifically. For anyone else, Paradox Rift delivers more surprise per dollar.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs are in an Obsidian Flames or Paradox Rift booster box?

Both booster boxes contain 36 packs with 10 cards each: 360 cards per box before energy cards.

Which set has more Secret Rares?

Paradox Rift has 84 Secret Rares (cards numbered 183/182 through 266/182), compared to 33 in Obsidian Flames (cards numbered 198/197 through 230/197). Paradox Rift is one of the deepest Secret Rare pools of any standard SV set from its release era.

Is Obsidian Flames still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, if Charizard ex is your target or you are building a Tera-type collection. Both sets are secondary-market prices now. Obsidian Flames commands a premium over Paradox Rift precisely because the Charizard ex SIR pull drives demand for the box.

What are the Paradox Rift Elite Trainer Box variants?

Paradox Rift released two ETBs: a Roaring Moon ex version and a Pokémon Center Exclusive Iron Valiant ex version. Both contain 9 booster packs, accessories, and a themed promo card. The Iron Valiant Pokémon Center ETB is the rarer variant and typically prices higher on the secondary market.

Can I find both sets at independent shops?

Yes. Both Obsidian Flames and Paradox Rift remain in stock at independent shops that participate in the UCP marketplace. DexHaul is independent and unofficial: we search across multiple merchants so you can compare prices in one place.
