Pokémon X vs Pokémon Y: Which to Buy (2026)

Pokémon X for Nintendo 3DS, World Edition, factory sealed
Pokemon X [World Edition] [New Condition] · $52.99 USD

The version you pick for Pokémon X and Y is almost entirely a Mega Evolution decision.

Both games take you through the same Kalos region story, released worldwide on October 12, 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. The split comes down to which Mega Stones are obtainable in each version: Charizardite X and Mewtwonite X are in Pokémon X, and Charizardite Y and Mewtwonite Y are in Pokémon Y.

Buy X if Mega Charizard X's Fire/Dragon typing is what you want. Buy Y if Mega Charizard Y's sun-boosted special offense or Yveltal's Dark/Flying moveset appeals more. For anyone without a preference, Pokémon Y runs $5 to $10 cheaper in the secondary market right now, observed October 2026.

Where Pokémon X wins

Xerneas: the first pure Fairy-type legendary

Xerneas is the version legendary for Pokémon X, a pure Fairy type that arrived alongside the Fairy type's introduction in Gen 6. Its signature move, Geomancy, boosts Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by two stages in a single turn. Paired with a Power Herb for an instant activation, Xerneas was one of the defining threats in the Gen 6 competitive metagame, appearing in multiple World Championship top cuts across 2014 and 2015.

Mega Charizard X and the Dragon typing

Professor Sycamore gifts Charmander to the player in Lumiose City in both versions. The version-exclusive piece is the Mega Stone.

Charizardite X, found only in Pokémon X, turns Charizard into a Fire/Dragon type with the Tough Claws ability, which boosts contact moves by 30 percent. The Dragon typing also significantly reduces incoming Rock-type damage.

Normal Charizard and Mega Charizard Y (Fire/Flying) take four times the damage from Rock-type moves, costing 50 percent of their HP per Stealth Rock switch-in. Mega Charizard X takes two times Rock damage instead, cutting that entry cost to 25 percent. That resilience was the primary competitive argument for X over Y throughout the Gen 6 era.

Mega Mewtwo X: Psychic/Fighting physical attacker

Mewtwonite X, also exclusive to Pokémon X, adds the Fighting type to Mewtwo and dramatically raises its Attack stat, making it a formidable physical sweeper. Players who want Mewtwo as an attacker rather than a special offense platform will find X's stone the stronger tool.

Version exclusives in X

Pokémon X includes Clauncher and Clawitzer (Water), Swirlix and Slurpuff (Fairy), and Pinsir alongside Mega Pinsir (Bug/Flying). The full version exclusives list covers additional Pokémon across both games. All version exclusives are tradeable through local wireless between two 3DS systems in the same room, with no internet connection required.

Where Pokémon Y wins

Pokémon Y's advantages are less visible at a glance but meaningful for specific play styles.

Yveltal: Dark/Flying with recovery built in

Yveltal is Y's version legendary, a Dark/Flying type whose signature move Oblivion Wing restores 75 percent of the damage dealt back to the user as HP. It also learns Sucker Punch for priority Dark-type damage. For players who prefer an offensive legendary with sustain, Yveltal offers a different toolkit than Xerneas's two-stage setup sweep.

Mega Charizard Y and Drought

Charizardite Y transforms Charizard into a Fire/Flying type with the Drought ability, automatically setting five turns of harsh sunlight on Mega Evolution. Drought raises Fire-type move power by 50 percent, and Mega Charizard Y pairs that boost with an exceptionally high Special Attack stat.

It dominated early VGC 2014 play as a weather-anchor special attacker before Mega Charizard X's Dragon typing became the doubles-preferred choice. For players who want a sun-based special offense platform, Y is the clear pick.

Mega Mewtwo Y: the Special Attack ceiling

Mewtwonite Y keeps Mewtwo as a pure Psychic type and raises its Special Attack to the highest base value of any Pokémon available at the time of X and Y's release in 2013. It was the go-to choice for Smogon Ubers players who wanted maximum special offense from Mewtwo without the Fighting-type coverage of the X variant.

Version exclusives in Y

Pokémon Y includes Skrelp and Dragalge (Water/Poison), Spritzee and Aromatisse (Fairy), and Heracross alongside Mega Heracross (Bug/Fighting). Mega Heracross was a prominent physical attacker in Gen 6 singles play: its Skill Link ability turns multi-hit moves like Pin Missile and Rock Blast into reliable five-hit sequences, giving it strong coverage despite its single type.

The deciding question

For a solo story playthrough, it does not matter. Both versions run through the same eight Gyms, the same rival battles, the same post-game content, and the same 721 total available Pokémon across both games through trading.

If Mega forms matter to you: choose X for Mega Charizard X's Dragon typing and Stealth Rock resilience, or for Xerneas as a Geomancy sweeper. Choose Y for Mega Charizard Y's Drought offense, Mega Mewtwo Y's peak Special Attack, or Yveltal's Dark-type toolkit.

For a gift, or if neither Mega preference applies: Pokémon Y's observed prices in October 2026 start noticeably lower than X for equivalent condition copies. Both cartridges deliver the same game. The Pokémon Nintendo Switch games guide covers the newer generation if the recipient already owns X or Y and wants what comes next.

What to know before buying a used copy

Pokémon X Nintendo 3DS cartridge
Pokemon X - Nintendo 3DS · $60.00 USD

Nintendo shut down the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service on May 20, 2014. GTS, Wonder Trade, and online ranked battles are permanently offline for both games.

Local wireless still works fully. Two players with 3DS systems in the same room can trade Pokémon, battle, and use the Pokémon Link feature without any internet connection. For most buyers in 2026, the offline single-player campaign plus local wireless trading covers the entire experience.

Reproduction cartridges exist for Gen 6 titles. Authentic Pokémon X and Y cartridges boot from the system menu with the game's own icon and do not display generic ROM header screens.

The cartridge label should show clean, unblurred printing with accurate colors. For a detailed authentication walkthrough, see the DexHaul guide on identifying fake Pokémon products.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pokémon X or Y better?

Neither version is objectively stronger. X offers Mega Charizard X (Fire/Dragon, physical attacker), Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting), and Xerneas as its version legendary.

Y offers Mega Charizard Y (Fire/Flying, Drought special attacker), Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic with peak Special Attack), and Yveltal. The story and overall game quality are identical in both versions.

Can I trade Pokémon X and Y with newer Switch games?

Yes, through Pokémon HOME via Pokémon Bank. The Bank app bridges 3DS saves and HOME, which connects to Scarlet, Violet, and other compatible titles. Individual Pokémon compatibility depends on whether the recipient game includes that Pokémon in its data.

What Pokémon are version exclusives in X?

Pokémon exclusive to X include Clauncher and Clawitzer (Water), Swirlix and Slurpuff (Fairy), and Pinsir with its Mega Evolution. All are obtainable in Y via local wireless trading with a friend who owns X.

What Pokémon are version exclusives in Y?

Y exclusives include Skrelp and Dragalge (Water/Poison), Spritzee and Aromatisse (Fairy), and Heracross with its Mega Evolution. Tradeable to X via local wireless.

Are the online features still working in 2026?

Online features are no longer available in 2026. Nintendo terminated the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service in May 2014, taking GTS and Wonder Trade permanently offline. Local wireless for trading and battling between two nearby 3DS systems still works without any internet connection.
