ME01 vs ME02 Booster Box: Which Pokémon TCG Set to Buy (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 15, 2026 · 5 min read
Buy ME01 if you want the exclusive Bulbasaur promo and a lower per-box price. Buy ME02 if Mega Charizard X is the card you are chasing.
Both sets are part of the English Mega Evolution TCG series, which launched in late 2025 and brings the Mega Evolution mechanic into the modern ex card era. ME01 released September 26, 2025 as the series launch set. ME02 Phantasmal Flames followed on November 14, 2025.
There is one fact that surprises most buyers: ME02 costs more per box than ME01, despite being the second set in the series. The Charizard name drives that inversion.

What Each Box Delivers
Both boxes ship 36 booster packs. That is where the format similarity ends.
The ME01 Enhanced Booster Box adds a stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare, numbered #133/132 and placing it outside the base set's rarity pool. That card is not available in any other ME01 retail format: not in the ETB, not in the Booster Bundle, and not pullable from a standard pack. If you want it, the Enhanced Box is the only sealed path.
ME02's standard booster box packs 36 pulls from the Phantasmal Flames set, which is built around three distinct Pokémon: Mega Charizard X, Mega Heracross, and Mega Lopunny, each with their own pack artwork. There is no bonus promo card in the ME02 box.
Where ME01 Wins
The exclusive Bulbasaur promo
The stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare is the decisive advantage for serious collectors. It is one of the few cards in the Mega Evolution series that is format-exclusive: the only way to get it sealed is to buy the Enhanced Box. Completed sets that include this promo will always need to account for it, and it cannot be substituted by pulling from packs.
Lower price per box
ME01 lists $90-$150 cheaper per box than ME02 across comparable sellers, observed October 2026. Both boxes deliver 36 packs, so you get the same pack-opening volume for significantly less outlay.
ME01 also includes the exclusive Bulbasaur promo that ME02 does not. For buyers who are not specifically chasing Mega Charizard X, the ME02 premium is difficult to justify.

Where ME02 Wins
Mega Charizard X is the headline card
If Mega Charizard X is the Pokémon you collect, ME02 is the set. Mega Charizard X gained the Dragon type alongside its Fire typing, trading the orange aesthetic for dark scales and blue flames. It is one of only two Mega Charizard forms, which makes it a specific target for anyone building a complete Charizard evolution line.
The Charizard premium is real and measurable: it adds roughly $100 to the ME02 booster box price versus ME01, before you open a single pack. That premium has been consistent across TCG eras. If Charizard cards are your target, you are already accounting for it.
Three distinct pack art variants
ME02 ships with Mega Charizard X, Mega Heracross, and Mega Lopunny pack fronts. Collectors who display sealed packs or want a complete visual lineup of the set have more variety to work with than ME01's two-variant release. Specialty sellers stock individual pack arts by name, which matters for display builds.
The Deciding Question
Which Pokémon do you actually collect?
If you pull for Mega Lucario ex or want the exclusive Bulbasaur promo sealed in your collection, ME01 is the clear pick. It delivers more per dollar and includes the only format-exclusive card in either box. For buyers who are budget-conscious or simply want 36 packs from the Mega Evolution series, ME01 is the rational choice at current prices.
If your collection is Charizard-anchored, ME02 is where you spend. The Charizard premium is unlikely to go away, and the three-art pack variety is a genuine bonus for sealed-pack display collectors.

Both sets are available now from independent shops. Prices were observed at multiple sellers, October 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ME02 have an Enhanced Booster Box like ME01?
No. ME02 Phantasmal Flames shipped as a standard 36-pack booster box with no exclusive promo card. The Enhanced format, which adds a stamped Illustration Rare promo, was specific to the ME01 launch product.
Can you get the Bulbasaur promo from ME01 any other way?
No, not sealed. The stamped Bulbasaur Illustration Rare (#133/132) is exclusive to the ME01 Enhanced Booster Box. It does not appear in ME01 ETBs, the Booster Bundle, or any standard pack pull.
Which set has better pull rates for Special Illustration Rares?
Pull rates are not officially published by The Pokémon Company. Both sets follow the standard ME-era distribution across 36 packs. Community opening data exists but is not verified by a primary source, so no per-pack SIR rate is stated here.
Is ME02 worth the higher price if I am not targeting Charizard?
For most buyers, no. ME01 delivers the same 36-pack volume, an exclusive bonus card, and costs $90-$150 less per box. ME02's premium is driven by Mega Charizard X's collector demand, not by a meaningful difference in box contents.
