Mega Evolution ME01 vs ME04 Booster Box: Which $260+ Box Should You Buy?
By Dexhaul Team · September 9, 2026
ME01 costs more. ME04 has the higher-ceiling chase card.
That split sits at the center of every serious comparison between these two Mega Evolution booster boxes. ME01 Enhanced runs $285 to $320 depending on the seller. ME04 Chaos Rising lists anywhere from $182 to $259.
Both are 2026 English Mega Evolution series sets, and neither is a clear winner on price alone. The choice comes down to which Pokémon you are chasing and whether you are willing to comparison shop across listings.
One of these boxes rewards patient shoppers far more than the other.
What Each Set Is Built Around
The Mega Evolution mechanic debuted in Pokémon X and Y in 2013, letting certain Pokémon temporarily push past their final form in battle. The 2026 English Mega Evolution TCG series revisits that era through a new "ex" card format, with each set anchored by a flagship Pokémon.
ME01 launched the series with Mega Lucario ex as its centerpiece. Lucario is one of the most consistently popular Pokémon across every product category: plush, figures, competitive decks, and sealed collector product. Its Mega Evolution, detailed in Lucario's Bulbapedia entry, gave it Steel/Fighting dual typing and a stat profile that made it a premier threat in the original XY competitive format.
ME01 carries that legacy into the new format with Mega Lucario ex as the print most collectors target.
ME04 Chaos Rising arrived later in the series with Greninja as its flagship. Greninja became the standout non-legendary Pokémon of the XY anime era, known particularly for the Bond Phenomenon form it shared with Ash. Its Water/Dark typing made it a competitive staple through multiple TCG eras.
ME04 features Mega Greninja ex as its headline card, numbered 122/086 in the Japanese equivalent set, placing it above the set total and confirming its Special Illustration Rare status.
The Chase Cards: Ceiling Value vs Prestige
ME01's Mega Lucario ex currently sits in the $100-110 range on the secondary market. ME04's Mega Greninja ex Special Illustration Rare runs $182-200. The top card in ME04 is worth roughly twice the top card in ME01, yet ME01's booster box costs more at every price point.
This price inversion is driven entirely by Lucario's character premium. Lucario sells across every collectible format, and the ME01 box carries the prestige of being the series launch product. Collectors who want to own the set that started the English Mega Evolution line pay a premium that has nothing to do with raw card value.
ME04 buyers get better expected card value per dollar spent on the box. ME01 buyers get the founding set of the series with its most iconic character. Those are genuinely different purchases serving different collector goals.
The Price Spread That Changes Everything for ME04
Here is what separates ME04 shopping from ME01 shopping.
The ME04 Chaos Rising Booster Box lists at $259 from one seller and $181.99 from another, with multiple additional listings between $184.99 and $224.98. That is a $77 gap, roughly 42%, between the cheapest and most expensive listing for the same product. ME01 clusters in a $285-320 range across sellers, a spread of about 12%.
The sellers offering ME04 at the lower end of the range are established hobby retailers: Collector Store LLC and Double Infinity Gaming both carry active ME series inventory. The wide spread is not a sign of product quality variance. It reflects different seller pricing strategies for the same sealed product.
If you have settled on ME04, checking two or three listings before you buy is worth your time. ME01 shoppers have less to gain from the same exercise: the tighter range means the savings from shopping around are smaller.
Who Should Buy ME01
ME01 is the right buy if you collect the character more than the ceiling. Mega Lucario ex is the card most associated with the English Mega Evolution series. Collectors building a Lucario collection, or who want the founding set of the run regardless of card value math, are paying for significance as much as for pack contents.
ME01 is also the simpler purchase. The price range is predictable, the sellers are consistent, and you know roughly what a box costs before you look. For buyers who want certainty over optimization, that matters.
Who Should Buy ME04
ME04 is the stronger buy if your primary goal is the highest SIR value relative to box cost. Mega Greninja ex SIR at $182-200 raw puts ME04's top card well above ME01's, and ME04's box price is lower at every price point on the current market.
It is also the better buy for anyone comfortable doing a few minutes of comparison shopping. The 42% seller spread on ME04 means that where you land in the $182-259 range is a real decision with real dollar consequences. Buyers who check two listings before committing can save up to $77 on the same product, which covers the cost of several individual packs or a Booster Bundle from elsewhere in the series.
Greninja's XY anime profile also makes ME04 a compelling pick for collectors who focus on that generation. The XY anime era produced some of the most memorable Pokémon storytelling of the decade, and Greninja was at the center of it.
Both Boxes as Aura Seeker Bridge Buys
One context that applies equally to both: they function as bridge buys ahead of ME07 Aura Seeker.
ME07 is building toward the ex star format, and the current conversation around what to own before that set drops returns consistently to Mega Lucario ex and Mega Greninja ex SIR as the two highest-profile in-stock targets in the ME series. Buying either box now positions you in the Mega Evolution collector arc before ME07 reshapes the pricing and attention across the series.
If you are buying as part of an Aura Seeker prep strategy, ME04 gives you more card value per dollar. ME01 gives you the set that opened the series, which carries its own weight in how that arc gets told over time.
