Pokémon Card Sleeve Sizes: Standard, Small, Japanese and What Fits (2026)

Sleeve packaging lists the sleeve's dimensions, not the card's. That single gap is where most size mismatches come from.

Standard Pokémon TCG cards measure 63 mm × 88 mm. The matching outer sleeve is 66 mm × 91 mm; that 3 mm clearance on each axis is enough to let the card slide in cleanly without bowing the sleeve or peeling the card edge. Modern Japanese cards (Scarlet & Violet and all recent sets) are the same 63 × 88 mm, so they take the same outer sleeve as English cards.

Pokémon card sleeve compatibility matrix

Use this table as your quick reference. All dimensions are width × height in millimetres.

Card format Card dimensions Outer sleeve Inner (perfect-fit) sleeve
Standard English (all modern sets) 63 × 88 mm 66 × 91 mm Standard perfect-fit
Modern Japanese (SV era and later) 63 × 88 mm 66 × 91 mm Standard perfect-fit
Japanese small (older JP sets, mini-format) approx. 59 × 86 mm 62 × 89 mm n/a
Oversized promo card approx. 82 × 124 mm Rigid toploader or oversized sleeve n/a

The 3 mm rule holds across all formats: sleeve inner dimensions run roughly 3 mm wider and taller than the card they fit. If a sleeve lists its inner size, subtract 3 mm on each axis to find the largest card it comfortably holds. Dragon Shield's sleeve catalogue lists inner dimensions alongside each product line for easy cross-referencing.

Choose by what you are protecting

Your playing deck

A 60-card playing deck needs sleeves that shuffle smoothly under pressure. The standard 66 × 91 mm outer sleeve is the right choice: the 3 mm clearance gives enough room for a clean table riffle without the card catching on the sleeve opening. Dragon Shield Matte (pictured above) and Ultra PRO Pro-Matte are the two most widely used options at local league nights and Regional events alike. Both manufacturers publish their inner sleeve tolerances on their product pages.

Valuable cards going into a binder or display

High-value cards benefit from double-sleeving: a tight perfect-fit inner sleeve first, then a standard 66 × 91 mm outer sleeve over the top. The inner sleeve seals the open edge that a standard outer sleeve leaves exposed, reducing dust and handling wear. Perfect-fit inners are designed for 63 × 88 mm standard cards and sit flush enough to slide easily into the outer sleeve without creating a bulky stack. Dragon Shield Perfect Fit Clear is the most commonly stocked option at Australian TCG retailers.

Japanese Pokémon Center design sleeves

Pokémon Center Japan sells official deck shield packs with character artwork. These are outer sleeves for standard-size modern cards (63 × 88 mm), so they use the same 66 × 91 mm sleeve dimensions as any other standard outer sleeve. Import shops stock them as sealed 64-count packs.

Oversized promo cards

Jumbo promo cards bundled with some booster boxes and collector sets measure approximately 82 × 124 mm and do not fit any standard sleeve. Store them in rigid oversized toploaders or dedicated jumbo card sleeves. Attempting to force them into a standard sleeve will split the sleeve at the seam and may crease the card's corners.

Mistakes that damage cards

  • Buying sleeves by brand name alone without checking the size label. Dragon Shield, Ultra PRO, and KMC all make multiple sleeve sizes. Picking up "Dragon Shield" without confirming "66 × 91 mm" or "Standard" can land you with Japanese small sleeves that are too tight for English cards.
  • Overstuffing sleeves. Perfect-fit inner sleeves grip the card tightly by design. Forcing an already double-sleeved card into a third layer causes the card to bow under the pressure and can permanently warp foil cards.
  • Inserting cards corner-first. Sliding the card in at an angle puts the corner against the sleeve's edge seam, which is the weakest part. Always insert straight down: open end up, card centred, even pressure on both long sides.
  • Mixing sleeve brands mid-deck. Even if two sleeves are both labelled 66 × 91 mm, subtle thickness differences between brands can create a tactile tell during a game. Tournament rules generally require a uniform sleeve appearance throughout a deck.
  • Ignoring the open edge on a standard outer sleeve. The card's top edge is exposed. For high-value cards sitting in a binder long-term, that gap allows airborne dust and oils to contact the card face. Add a perfect-fit inner sleeve to close the gap before filing.

Ultra PRO's product page lists the sleeve's inner dimensions alongside shuffle noise and thickness ratings, worth checking before committing to a 100-pack.

Sleeve sets as Pokémon gifts this holiday season

A set of high-quality sleeves is a genuinely useful gift for any active Pokémon player: more considered than a random booster pack and immediately put to use in the next deck build. Matching sleeves to the recipient's favourite Pokémon (Pikachu, Charizard, Eevee) is a reliable way to personalise something practical. For a player who travels to league nights, a 100-count matte outer sleeve paired with a 100-count perfect-fit inner sleeve covers one full deck with spares. Japanese Pokémon Center character sleeves add a collectible angle that fans of the imported product line appreciate. Frequently asked questions

Are Japanese Pokémon cards the same size as English cards?

Modern Japanese Pokémon cards (Scarlet & Violet, Sword & Shield, and the sets directly before them) are 63 × 88 mm, the same dimensions as English cards. They fit in any standard 66 × 91 mm outer sleeve. Older Japanese-only cards from some earlier sets used a slightly smaller format; those require the 62 × 89 mm Japanese small sleeve size. If you are unsure about a specific set, measure the card before buying sleeves.

What is the difference between a standard sleeve and a perfect-fit sleeve?

A standard outer sleeve (66 × 91 mm) has a 3 mm clearance around the card and an open top. A perfect-fit inner sleeve is designed to sit flush against a 63 × 88 mm card with very little gap, sealing the card on all four sides. Perfect-fit sleeves are used underneath a standard outer sleeve. This two-layer approach is called double-sleeving and is permitted at most Organised Play events when the deck passes the sleeve uniformity check.

Can I use standard sleeves for a Commander or Magic deck?

Magic: The Gathering cards are also 63 × 88 mm, so yes, any standard 66 × 91 mm sleeve fits both games interchangeably. The sleeve brand and texture are what matter for feel and tournament legality, not the game the sleeve is marketed for.

How many sleeves do I need for a Pokémon deck?

A standard Pokémon deck is 60 cards. A 100-count pack covers the deck with 40 spares for replacements when sleeves split during shuffling. If you are double-sleeving, buy one 100-count outer sleeve pack and one 100-count perfect-fit inner sleeve pack per deck.
