Kalos Starters in 2026: Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie Compared for Collectors
By Dexhaul Team · September 2, 2026
The Kalos starters are the only generation in the 30th Anniversary lineup with their own Japanese-exclusive card set available before a single English booster hits shelves.
Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie debuted in Pokémon X and Y in 2013. In the thirteen years since, they have built three very different collecting profiles. Froakie's line produced Greninja, one of the most successful competitive Water-types in Scarlet and Violet.
Fennekin has the deeper fan following and the rarer Pokémon Center promo. Chespin stays accessible and quiet. All three have real products in-stock right now, and the 30th Anniversary window means the next two weeks are a meaningful buying moment for any of them.
The 30th Anniversary Kalos Card Set
Pokémon released a Japanese-exclusive card set for the Kalos region as part of the 30th Anniversary Celebration line.
The M-P (Kalos) set pairs Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie promo cards with anniversary-themed booster packs. Import retailers have it available now at two price points: the single-set format at around $91, and a booster box format at approximately $55.
Neither format is widely stocked outside Japan. That scarcity is worth taking seriously: demand for 30th Anniversary products is rising as the September 16 global English launch approaches, and Japanese exclusives consistently thin out before English product arrives on shelves.
Collectors who want a Kalos-specific set piece for the 30th Anniversary have roughly two weeks to act before launch-week pressure hits import stock.
Chespin: The Accessible Pick
Chespin is the Grass-type starter, evolving through Quilladin into Chesnaught. The Chesnaught line never made a major mark on competitive play, which keeps Chespin card prices low and gives collectors an unusually clean entry point.
The best modern Chespin card is the Chaos Rising Illustration Rare (CRI 87/86), priced at $7 in the current secondary market. The XY-era original from the Kalos Starter Set (card 8/162, 2013) trades for under a dollar in played condition.
Neither asks significant budget. Chespin is the starter to choose if you want a clean TCG collection without managing a high-end chase tier.
The plush story is more interesting than the card story for Chespin. The Ichiban Kuji 30th Anniversary Vol. 2 Chespin plush is a lottery-prize item released alongside the anniversary campaign.
Kuji prizes are produced in defined quantities and distributed through Japanese toy shops; import supply is genuinely limited. The $28 price reflects that without being unreasonable.
The All Star Collection PP304 Chespin by Sanei is the everyday alternative: a quality display piece, consistently restocked at Japanese import shops, and the right companion plush if you are building the complete Kalos trio.
Fennekin: The Fan Favorite
Fennekin is the most popular Kalos starter by the margin most community polls report.
The Fire/Psychic line that runs through Braixen to Delphox gives Fennekin a secondary-type niche that the other two starters lack. Psychic-type starters are uncommon in the main series, and that distinction creates a collector category of its own.
The card to know is the Pokémon Center Exclusive Mega Evolution Promo, number 080. Released as part of the XY Mega Evolution Promo (MEP) series, it was distributed at Pokémon Center locations in sealed condition and has not been widely reprinted. Sealed copies list at $41–$60 depending on seller and condition.
A 2026 Chaos Rising promo also numbered around 080 includes updated Fennekin art and sells sealed at $5 from independent sellers. It is the easiest entry card for anyone starting the Fennekin collection without committing to vintage promo prices. Fennekin's evolution line stops at Delphox in terms of high-end Scarlet and Violet TCG impact: there is no SIR or hyper rare for the Delphox line, which actually keeps the collection scope manageable compared to Froakie's.
Froakie: The Gateway to Greninja
Froakie has one advantage the other two starters do not: its final evolution is Greninja.
Greninja has a long competitive history across multiple formats, and in Scarlet and Violet it holds a Special Illustration Rare from Twilight Masquerade (214/167) that currently lists above $370. That demand pulls attention to the base form.
Collectors who want to build the complete Froakie-to-Greninja line can start affordably. The Chaos Rising Illustration Rare (088/086) is Froakie's best modern entry card at $12, with art quality that gives it genuine display value rather than just set-completion weight.
The XY Kalos Starter Set Froakie (12/39) from 2013 trades at $2–$5 depending on condition, making it a reasonable first-generation anchor for collectors building backward from modern releases. The All Star Collection PP306 Froakie plush by Sanei at $22 pairs naturally with the equivalent Greninja and Chespin plush from the same range, forming a complete Kalos water-starter shelf display without requiring separate sourcing.
The Greninja Factor
Greninja's market position changes the scale of what a Froakie collection can become.
The Twilight Masquerade SIR (214/167) is the current high-end target for the Greninja line: a full-art card with illustration-quality rendering that commands real secondary market prices. Most collectors building toward it start with sealed product rather than singles. The Mega Greninja ex Premium Collection is the logical entry at $51: it includes the Mega Greninja ex card, a foil promo, a lenticular card, a tech sticker, and booster packs.
For plush, the Greninja All Star Collection PP50 by Sanei at $27 is the standard reference item. It pairs directly with the PP306 Froakie and PP304 Chespin from the same series for a complete Kalos display. The Mega Greninja plush at $56 is available for collectors who want the larger-format version matching the current Mega arc.
Which Starter Is the Better Collector Entry?
The answer depends on how far you want the collection to scale.
Chespin costs the least and asks the fewest decisions. The card ceiling is low, the plush are accessible, and the collection is easy to complete without a high-end chase. If you want a clean Kalos starter collection without managing a premium tier, Chespin is the practical choice.
Fennekin has the better promo card story. The Pokémon Center MEP 080 is a genuine sealed collector item with a clear provenance: distributed only through Pokémon Center, not widely reprinted.
The absence of a modern SIR for the Delphox line keeps the collection manageable rather than open-ended. It suits collectors who want a defined top-end piece without committing to a sprawling evolution chain.
Froakie scales. Starting with the Chaos Rising Illustration Rare at $12 puts you in the Froakie collecting tier at low commitment.
The evolution line offers a natural path upward through the Mega Greninja ex Premium Collection and, for high-end collectors, toward the Twilight Masquerade SIR. No other Kalos starter line offers that kind of range in a single consistent collecting arc.
The 30th Anniversary Kalos card set is the one product all three share, and it is the most time-sensitive item in this guide. All other products here are regularly stocked; the Japanese-exclusive set is not.
