The Pokémon Mega Evolution TCG launched with ME01 and has now grown to ME06, with a numbered English run (ME01 through ME05) and a parallel Japanese branch that has produced M6 Storm Emeralda. If you've been watching the series and wondering where to start, or which set fills a gap in your collection, the answer depends less on "newest" or "oldest" and more on what you actually want from the product.
This guide breaks down all six sets by buying scenario. The Sets at a Glance
The numbered English series runs ME01 (the original Enhanced Booster) through ME05 (Pitch Black, launching August 28). ME2.5 Ascended Heroes sits between ME02 and ME03 as a bridge release. M6 Storm Emeralda is currently a Japanese-language import, with a preorder window closing August 20. Each set has its own featured Pokémon, card pool, and format range: booster boxes, Elite Trainer Boxes, tins, three-packs, and individual packs vary by set.
One thing the series does consistently: it does not reprint cards across sets. If a card appears in ME01, it does not appear in ME04. That makes the sets genuinely additive for collectors rather than redundant.
If You Want the Easiest Entry: ME04 Chaos Rising
ME04 Chaos Rising is the most practical starting point in the series, and not just because it's widely available. It's the set with the most competing sellers across multiple regions, which keeps prices honest. Booster box pricing runs from $185 to $265 depending on retailer, with ETBs available in the $65–$106 range. That spread reflects real market competition, not markup from a single source.
Chaos Rising also benefits from a well-documented card list by the time you're reading this, so you know what pull rates look like before you commit. New collectors often overvalue the first set in a series because "first" sounds more collectible. The reality in a growing series is that ME04 carries none of the "unproven release" uncertainty that ME01 carried at launch, and the secondary market for singles gives you a clearer sense of card value distribution.

If You Want an ETB on a Budget: ME03 Perfect Order
ME03 Perfect Order has the lowest ETB price in the English series, with units available from $70 to $72 from multiple sellers. That is roughly on par with a mainstream Scarlet & Violet ETB, which gives collectors a familiar benchmark.
The ETB format includes card sleeves, a coin, dice, and damage counters alongside the booster packs, making it a complete out-of-the-box experience. Perfect Order sits in the middle of the series timeline, so you get a more developed card pool than ME01 without the higher price tag that often follows first-set releases.
If You Want the Newest English Release: ME05 Pitch Black
ME05 Pitch Black is the current English frontier of the series. It ships August 28, 2026, and pre-orders are live now from multiple sellers: ETBs in the $70–$90 range, booster boxes from $180 to $206.
Pitch Black launches alongside the Mega Forces Tins wave (Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Dragonite ex), which makes the release window broader than a single booster box. If You Are Chasing Japanese Imports: M6 Storm Emeralda
Storm Emeralda is the Japanese-language sixth set in the Mega Evolution series, and it is currently only available as an import. Booster box pricing runs from $145 to $212 depending on seller, with Japan Figure Store at the lower end ($151) and several North American importers above $170.
The key constraint: the preorder window for most sellers closes around August 20, 2026. After that date, import stock will depend on secondary market availability and what individual sellers managed to secure. If you are planning to buy Storm Emeralda, the window is now. If You Are Starting From Set One: ME01 Base Set
ME01, sold as the Enhanced Booster, is the original Mega Evolution TCG release. It carries the highest booster box prices in the series: $300 to $390 across current seller listings, with ETBs at $125. Those prices reflect first-set collector interest, a wider initial card pool, and the usual premium for foundational sets.
ME01 makes sense as a purchase if you are building a complete series run or if a specific first-set card is on your want list. It does not make sense as an entry point simply because it is "the original." The card pool does not overlap with later sets, so there is no duplication risk buying ME04 first and ME01 later. If completionism is the goal, you will buy ME01 eventually regardless of where you start.
The Bridge: ME2.5 Ascended Heroes
Ascended Heroes sits between the main numbered sets as a standalone release with its own EX Box format. Three featured Pokémon: Mega Feraligatr ex, Mega Meganium ex, and Mega Emboar ex, each sold as individual EX Boxes at $50–$60. An ETB also exists for collectors who want the full format.
The EX Box format is more targeted than a booster box: a smaller pack count, a featured Pokémon focus, and a lower price floor. Which Set, Then?
The counterintuitive answer: ME04 Chaos Rising for most buyers. Not because it is the newest, but because it has the most seller competition, the most documented card list, and none of the premium that the original ME01 commands without necessarily delivering more value per pack.
If you are committed to the series from the start, work backwards from ME01 after you have opened ME04 and know the format. If you want to catch a deadline, Storm Emeralda closes August 20 and Pitch Black plus Ascended Heroes ship August 28. Those are the two live windows in the series right now.
