Pokémon Metal Card Holders: Which Toploader Fits (2026)

The wrong toploader is the most common way collectors damage a metal card they waited months to open.

Standard Pokémon cards fit a 35pt toploader. Metal cards from Ultra Premium Collections require a holder rated for much thicker card stock, typically 100pt or higher. The fit chart below covers every Pokémon card type so you know exactly what to buy before you open the box.

The complete toploader and one-touch guide covers the basics of rigid holders and magnetic closures. This article focuses on where the 35pt standard breaks down: metal cards from Ultra Premium Collections.

The fit chart: every Pokémon card type

The "pt" measurement on a toploader refers to the maximum card thickness in points, where 1pt equals one one-hundredth of an inch. Standard Pokémon card stock prints at approximately 20pt. A 35pt toploader fits cards up to 35pt thick, which covers all standard Pokémon prints with room for a penny sleeve.

Card type Examples Holder size needed Notes
Standard Pokémon card Commons, uncommons, holos, Illustration Rares, Special Illustration Rares, Gold rares, Secret Rares 35pt toploader Penny-sleeve first for best protection; fits all modern expansions
Reverse holo or full-art card Any reverse holo from Scarlet Violet era; Trainer Gallery; Character Rares 35pt toploader Same stock as commons; no thicker holder needed
Metal promotional card (UPC) Celebrations UPC metal Pikachu and Charizard (2021); Arceus VSTAR UPC metal cards (2022); 151 UPC etched metal Mew ex (2023) 100pt+ thick toploader or one-touch Do not force into 35pt; damages surface coating
Jumbo oversized promo Oversized promos from ETBs; fan-event jumbo cards 5" x 7" or larger toploader Standard thickness, larger format; needs bigger dimensions, not a thicker holder

Standard collection cards

All modern Pokémon cards use standard card stock. A Charizard ex SIR and a bulk Pidgey from the same pack measure the same thickness. A 35pt toploader fits both, along with every card from every current expansion.

The one rule that trips up new collectors: always sleeve the card in a penny sleeve before inserting it into the toploader.

Without a sleeve, the card shifts inside the rigid holder and the edges make contact with the PVC walls. Over time that produces micro-scratches. A penny sleeve costs almost nothing and eliminates the problem entirely.

Metal cards from Ultra Premium Collections

Three Pokémon TCG Ultra Premium Collections have shipped with official metal promotional cards. The Celebrations UPC (released October 2021) included metal Base Set Pikachu and Base Set Charizard. The Arceus VSTAR UPC (released late 2022) included metal Arceus V and Arceus VSTAR.

The Scarlet Violet 151 UPC (released October 2023) included an etched metal Mew ex. All three require the same thick holder. None fit in a 35pt toploader.

None of these fit in a 35pt toploader. Their metal substrate makes them significantly thicker than standard card stock. Use a one-touch magnetic holder or a thick toploader rated 100pt or higher.

The etched metal Mew ex from the 151 UPC carries one additional consideration. Its etching creates raised and recessed areas across the card face. A holder that grips too tightly puts pressure on those high points, accelerating surface wear faster than a flat metal card would show.

The 100pt-or-higher rule applies to all three UPCs. It matters most for the 151 Mew ex.

Jumbo and oversized promo cards

Jumbo promos from Elite Trainer Boxes are standard card stock in a larger format, typically 5.75" x 8". They do not require a thicker holder, just a wider one.

A 35pt toploader is the right thickness but the wrong dimensions. Use a 5" x 7" or larger toploader. The ETB fit chart covers oversized promo cases if you are protecting a full ETB.

Three mistakes that damage cards

Forcing a 35pt holder onto a metal card

A metal card may slide partway into a 35pt toploader, especially an older one with a worn lip. It will not sit flat, and the tight fit puts pressure on the surface coating.

Removing the card later almost always leaves marks. If there is any resistance at all, stop and use the correct thick holder.

Skipping the penny sleeve for standard cards

A standard toploader holds a standard Pokémon card with just enough clearance for the card to shift on every jostle. Without a penny sleeve acting as a buffer, the card edges rub against the PVC walls. It is a slow process, but over weeks the edge damage becomes visible.

Proper storage costs almost nothing when you factor in penny sleeves.

Storing two cards in one holder

Stacking two cards in a single toploader is a common shortcut when supplies run low. For standard cards it creates surface contact between the two faces throughout storage. For metal cards with etched surfaces, the raised points press directly into each other.

One card per holder, every time.

Gift buyers: add the right holder to a UPC

If you are buying a Pokémon Ultra Premium Collection as a holiday gift, include a thick-card holder alongside the box. Many collectors will not know they need a different holder until after they have already tried the standard one.

A thick-card toploader adds under $10 to the gift. For more ideas at every price, see the Pokémon holiday gift guide.

Frequently asked questions

What toploader fits a standard Pokémon card?

A 35pt rigid toploader fits every standard Pokémon card, including commons, holos, reverse holos, full-art cards, Special Illustration Rares, and Gold rares. All modern Pokémon cards use the same card stock thickness.

Which Pokémon products come with metal cards?

Three Ultra Premium Collections include official metal promotional cards: the Celebrations UPC (2021, metal Pikachu and Charizard), the Arceus VSTAR UPC (2022, metal Arceus V and Arceus VSTAR), and the Scarlet Violet 151 UPC (2023, etched metal Mew ex). These are the only official Pokémon TCG metal cards as of October 2026.

Can a standard penny sleeve fit a Pokémon metal card?

Standard penny sleeves fit most metal cards by dimension. The issue is not the sleeve: it is the toploader.

A penny-sleeved metal card in a 35pt toploader creates a tighter fit than the holder is designed for, putting pressure on the surface coating. Use the sleeve, then use a thick holder rated 100pt or higher.

Do Special Illustration Rares or Hyper Rares need a thicker toploader?

No. Special Illustration Rares, Hyper Rares, and all other premium treatment cards in modern Pokémon expansions are printed on standard card stock. They fit in a 35pt toploader exactly like a common card from the same pack.

What size toploader fits a Pokémon jumbo promo card?

Jumbo promos are standard thickness but larger in format, typically 5.75" x 8". They need a toploader that is bigger in both dimensions, usually 5" x 7" or larger. A 35pt toploader is the right thickness rating but is too small to hold the card at all.
