Sceptile Collector's Guide 2026: From the 2003 Ruby & Sapphire Holo to M Sceptile-EX Full Art
By Dexhaul Team · September 23, 2026
Sceptile has the longest continuous TCG run of any Hoenn Grass-type starter, a Mega Evolution that gains Dragon typing in the main games, and a vintage holo from 2003 that still commands $40 to $52 in near-mint condition today.
This guide covers the full collecting path in order of release: the EX era Ruby & Sapphire and Emerald holos, the 2006 Crystal Guardians ex card, the XY Ancient Origins two-treatment split, and the plush and figure side of the market. All prices are from current active catalogue listings.

The EX Era Foundation (2003–2006)
Sceptile 11/109 from EX Ruby & Sapphire was the character's TCG debut alongside the generation's 2003 English release. Near-mint copies list from $40 to $52 today. The reverse holo version from the same set runs $44 to $52, tracking close to the standard holo because collector demand is split fairly evenly between the two treatments in this set.
Two years later, EX Emerald (2005) gave Sceptile a second holo slot as card 10/106. Current listings sit at $43 to $47 for near-mint, placing both EX era holos within the same $40 to $52 band. The near-identical pricing between a 2003 and 2005 card for the same character reflects how both sets draw from the same Hoenn set-completionist pool rather than separate demand drivers.
The Crystal Guardians ex Card (2006)
EX Crystal Guardians introduced Sceptile ex 96/100, the character's first "ex" designation in the TCG. One technical note that matters for collecting: this lowercase "ex" is the original EX era card type from 2003 to 2007, not the same as the XY era "EX" in uppercase that arrived eight years later. The two share a name but are structurally different card generations.
The PSA 4 (heavily played) copy currently lists at $150. Crystal Guardians had a narrower distribution than the Ruby & Sapphire launch set, and even graded copies in mid-range condition reflect that supply pressure.
This is not a beginner's entry point. It is the EX era apex card for Sceptile collectors chasing vintage above-set designations.
The XY Ancient Origins Split (2015)
XY Ancient Origins (August 2015) is where the modern collector decision sits for Sceptile. The set contains two distinct Sceptile-EX cards at very different price points, plus the Mega card.
Sceptile-EX 7/98 is the standard holofoil, running $6 to $42 depending on condition. Sceptile-EX 84/98 is a separate Full Art treatment with different artwork, listing at $38 to $51.
Both are playable EX cards with identical stats. The price gap is entirely art treatment.
Then there is M Sceptile-EX, which adds a layer of complexity.
Two M Sceptile-EX treatments, one set
Ancient Origins contains both M Sceptile-EX 8/98 (standard Ultra Rare) and M Sceptile-EX 85/98 (Full Art Ultra Rare). The standard treatment lists at $15 to $18. The Full Art lists at $59 to $89 raw, with lightly played copies landing at $60 to $70.
That is a 4 to 5x gap within the same 2015 set for the same Mega card. The standard and Full Art versions have identical gameplay text. The entire price difference is the illustration format: the Full Art shows Mega Sceptile filling the card frame at scale, which the standard holofoil version does not.
The Mega angle also pulls in a second collector audience. In XY and ORAS, Mega Sceptile is a Grass and Dragon dual type, the only Grass-type starter in the mainline franchise whose Mega Evolution carries Dragon typing.
Dragon collectors who typically focus on Salamence, Dragonite, or Garchomp lines occasionally land on M Sceptile-EX for the cross-type appeal. It does not move the price dramatically, but it explains why the Full Art has more consistent secondary demand than comparable Mega EX Full Arts from the same set era.
Sceptile Plush and Figures
The Sceptile Fit plush from Pokémon Center lists at $21. Fit plush are the baseline Pokémon Center soft-toy line: consistently available, not artificially scarce, with stable pricing. This is the entry-level merch option for Sceptile, and it is the one most likely to still be findable through multiple sellers rather than a single secondary listing.
The figure side runs higher. The Sceptile Pokémon Scale World Figure (Bandai Namco, Hoenn Region) lists at $47, which is standard pricing for Scale World single figures. These are pre-painted, ready-display figures rather than construction kits.
The Mega Sceptile plush options are both secondary market. The Pokémon Center Mega Sceptile Poké Plush lists at $96 to $97 on secondary listings, discontinued from the original retail run.
The Mega Sceptile OA (overaction) plush, a Pokémon Center Japan limited release, lists at $141.99 used. Neither is in current active print. Both reflect the collector premium on Mega-form plush that have no equivalent in the current Pokémon Center catalogue.
Three Collecting Paths
Vintage Hoenn collector
Start with Sceptile 11/109 from EX Ruby & Sapphire ($40 to $52) and work toward the Crystal Guardians ex 96/100. This is a condition-driven chase: near-mint raw copies of Crystal Guardians are harder to source than graded mid-condition copies, which is the reverse of most modern set dynamics.
XY era collector
Ancient Origins is a self-contained collecting target. The standard M Sceptile-EX 8/98 at $15 to $18 is the accessible entry.
The Full Art 85/98 at $59 to $89 is the apex for the same set and character. Both are available from multiple sellers without vintage condition premiums.
Merch and display collector
The Fit plush at $21 is the current active-inventory option, suitable as a desk display or starter piece. The Mega Sceptile Poké Plush at $96 is the secondary buy for collectors specifically chasing the Mega form. The Scale World figure at $47 bridges the two audiences as a non-plush display option that does not require a secondary market price.
