Pokémon Trick or Trade 2022 vs 2023 vs 2024: Which Halloween Bundle Is Worth It

Pokémon TCG: Trick or Trade BOOster Bundle 2024 · $50.00 USD

Three years of Trick or Trade, and all three editions are still circulating in independent shops today.

Buy the 2024 bundle if you want Scarlet and Violet era card frames and the Cosmos Holo Gengar, the most distinctive foil treatment across the series. Go for 2023 if pack count matters: forty packs versus the 2024 edition's thirty-five. The 2022 edition is the one to seek out if you want the Chandelure holo, the only Fire/Ghost-type anchor the series ever produced.

With Halloween 2026 on October 31, all three years are relevant right now. Here is the per-pack math and the honest breakdown.

At a glance

All three editions contain three cards per pack, each carrying a Pikachu-in-Halloween-costume stamp on the card face. That stamp makes them distinct from standard prints and not tournament-legal under official Pokémon tournament rules.

Scarlet and Violet introduced a new card frame design that sets 2024 visually apart from the earlier two editions.

Year Card era Packs per bundle Anchor holo card Foil treatment Observed bundle price (Oct 6, 2026) Per-pack at floor
2022 Sword and Shield 40+ Chandelure Standard holo $3.00/pack individual $3.00
2023 Sword and Shield 40 Gengar Standard holo $19.99 (bundle floor) $0.50
2024 Scarlet and Violet 35 Gengar Cosmos Holo $50.00 (bundle floor) $1.43

Prices observed at independent sellers October 6, 2026. Bundle prices vary significantly by seller. MSRP was not published by The Pokémon Company for any edition.

Where 2022 wins

The 2022 edition is the only one in the series with a Chandelure holo as its anchor card.

Chandelure is a Fire/Ghost-type Pokémon. That dual typing makes it the most on-brand Halloween pick of the three anchors.

Gengar (the anchor for both 2023 and 2024) is pure Ghost/Poison. Chandelure is the one that burns.

Collectors who focus on Sword and Shield era cards will find the 2022 black-bordered card frame consistent with the rest of their SWSH binder. The 2023 edition shares the same frame, but the 2022 Chandelure holo is unique to this year.

At around $3.00 per individual pack observed October 6, 2026, the 2022 single packs are the most expensive per-unit of the three. The bundle has largely dissolved into individual sellers, so buyers pay pack-by-pack. That said, the Chandelure holo singles are available separately from those same sellers at $1.60 to $3.99, which means the holo is obtainable without buying a full run.

Where 2023 wins

On pack count, 2023 is the clear winner.

The 2023 bundle contains 40 packs. The 2024 bundle contains 35.

At secondary market floor pricing observed October 6, 2026, that works out to $0.50 per pack for 2023 versus $1.43 per pack for 2024. The 2023 bundle floor is the best value in the series by a wide margin today, regardless of year preference.

The 2023 anchor is a Gengar holo with a standard foil treatment. It shares the Sword and Shield era frame with 2022. For a Halloween party where the goal is giving out the most packs for the budget, the math points clearly at 2023.

The one caveat: bundle prices for 2023 vary sharply across sellers. The floor and ceiling observed on October 6, 2026 were $19.99 and $59.99 for the same 40-pack bundle depending on the seller. Check the per-pack price against the seller you choose before committing.

Where 2024 wins

The 2024 edition introduced two things the earlier years do not have: Scarlet and Violet era card frames, and the Cosmos Holo foil treatment on its Gengar anchor card.

The SV card frame, which replaced the SWSH black border in the English TCG from 2023 onward, uses a silver teardrop motif and a streamlined card back. A collector building a binder of current-era cards will find 2024 packs fit naturally. The 2022 and 2023 packs carry the SWSH frame and look visually distinct alongside SV cards.

The Cosmos Holo treatment on the 2024 Gengar is the differentiating factor for foil collectors. That same prismatic deep-space pattern appeared in Generations (2016) and Celebrations (2021), two of the most acclaimed limited TCG releases. Its use in the 2024 Trick or Trade puts the same foil technology on a stamped Halloween card sold at the treat-bag price point.

There is also a practical consideration: no 2025 or 2026 edition has been announced. As covered in the 2026 Trick or Trade status article, the series currently ends at 2024. That makes 2024 the most recent edition and the one most likely to represent what a buyer means when they say "current" Trick or Trade.

The deciding question

Who is actually buying this, and for what?

Party host splitting packs among trick-or-treaters

Go for 2023. Forty packs at the lowest observed price per pack is the straightforward answer. The Gengar holo is a fine anchor card, and the extra five packs over 2024 makes a real difference when you are dividing a box.

Collector who wants the rarest foil treatment

Buy 2024. The Cosmos Holo Gengar is the most visually distinct card across the three editions. It is also the only edition with SV-era frames, which matters for collectors organizing by current era. For a standalone gift to someone who follows the TCG, the 2024 bundle is the one most people would recognize as "current."

Specifically after Chandelure

Only 2022 has it. No other edition in the series features Chandelure as the anchor holo.

If the goal is the Fire/Ghost type or completing a Chandelure-focused collection, 2022 individual packs are the only path. The Chandelure holo single is also available separately, so a buyer does not need to open an entire run to obtain one card.

Budget single-pack buyer

The 2024 individual packs at $2.00 observed (October 6, 2026) and the 2023 singles at $2.00 are tied at the cheapest single-pack price point in the secondary market. For a one-at-a-time purchase, either 2023 or 2024 is the same price. The deciding factor then comes back to era preference: SV frame or SWSH frame.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Pokémon Trick or Trade in 2025 or 2026?

No edition for 2025 or 2026 has been announced. The series ran from 2022 through 2024. The 2026 status article covers confirmed alternatives available now.

How many cards are in each Trick or Trade mini-pack?

Every edition contains exactly three cards per mini-pack. Bundle sizes differ: 40+ packs in 2022, 40 in 2023, and 35 in 2024.

Are Trick or Trade cards tournament-legal?

No. The Pikachu Halloween stamp on each card's face makes them distinct from standard prints. They cannot be played in official sanctioned events, though they can be stored and displayed alongside tournament-legal cards.

Which year has the Cosmos Holo treatment?

Only 2024. The Cosmos Holo (prismatic deep-space foil pattern) appears on the 2024 Gengar. The 2022 Chandelure and 2023 Gengar use standard holo treatments.

Can these mini-packs actually be used as Halloween treats?

Yes. The format was designed for the treat market: each mini-pack is sealed, individually sized, and priced for bulk buying. Individual packs from all three years are available from independent shops at $2.00 to $3.00 each.
