Typhlosion Collector's Guide: Every TCG Era, the Hisuian Twist, and What to Own in 2026

Typhlosion is the Johto starter that serious collectors consistently overlook, and that is where the most interesting finds live.

The Cyndaquil line debuted in Gold and Silver alongside Totodile and Chikorita. According to Bulbapedia, Typhlosion's design centers on the ring of fire vents on its neck that ignite during battle: a visual identity that translates distinctively to card art across every era it has appeared in. The WOTC-era sets established it early.

Neo Genesis (2000) gave Typhlosion its first holo rare slot. Expedition Base Set (2002) followed with a second holo at 64/165 during the E-reader era, when the E-series format marked every card with a dot code along the bottom. Both are now in the WOTC-era tier that draws collector attention, and both appear with more regularity in played condition than in gem-mint grades from original distribution.

The Delta Species Cards: Typhlosion Outside Its Own Type

EX Dragon Frontiers (2006) is where Typhlosion gets genuinely unusual.

According to Bulbapedia, EX Dragon Frontiers was one of the final sets in the EX era and the only set to feature only Delta Species Pokémon throughout. Delta Species cards presented familiar Pokémon with entirely different typings and energy requirements compared to their regular forms. For Typhlosion, a character whose entire identity is built around fire, this meant appearing with an altered energy type that changes how the card plays entirely.

Two Typhlosion Delta Species variants exist in Dragon Frontiers. Both carry the collector premium that comes with late-EX-era low-print runs.

The 12/101 holo rare currently lists on DexHaul through independent shops starting around $61. A second version, the non-numbered holo rare, commands over $100 in comparable condition.

Neither version appears frequently in high grades.

XY and Sword and Shield: The Modern Typhlosion Cards

BREAKthrough (2015) brought Typhlosion back into regular circulation as a holo rare at 20/162. The XY era gave it a clean treatment without any special mechanic attached, making the BREAKthrough version one of the easiest Typhlosion cards to find in solid condition at modest prices. Canadian retailers currently list it well under $10.

The VSTAR era added Typhlosion VSTAR to the Japanese Battle Region set in 2022. This version was not printed in the corresponding English set in the same configuration, making it a Japan-exclusive for collectors targeting the SWSH period.

PSA 10-graded copies from Battle Region are the cleanest way to represent the VSTAR format in a Typhlosion collection. DexHaul has graded copies from independent shops at $35 for a PSA 10.

Hisuian Typhlosion: The Typing That Sets It Apart

No other Johto starter got a regional variant. Typhlosion did.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus (2022) introduced Hisuian Typhlosion as a Fire/Ghost dual type, making it the only starter final evolution with Ghost as a secondary typing. The typing change is not cosmetic: Hisuian Typhlosion has a different move pool, different weaknesses, and a different visual style in card art, with a muted pale flame collar replacing the classic bright ring of fire.

For collectors, this creates a second distinct tier. A complete Typhlosion collection needs both the Johto base form across eras and the Hisuian variant from the Scarlet and Violet period. The Hisuian Typhlosion card is accessible: individual copies from SV-era sets list under $5 from multiple independent shops, making it the easiest entry point in the entire Typhlosion lineup.

Figures and Plush: Completing the Set Beyond Cards

Bandai's Scale World series covered the Johto region with its Region 15 release, including a Typhlosion figure built to the line's standard 1:40 scale. That scale consistency means it pairs visually with every other Scale World figure in a display without needing adjustment. The figure captures Typhlosion's fire-collar silhouette cleanly at a small format.

The Pokémon Fit plush series gave Typhlosion its own compact seated plush, consistent with the Fit line's style across the entire roster. The design keeps its proportions tight, making it a natural desk or shelf piece rather than a statement display item. Import sellers at around $21 currently have stock.

Where to Start Your Typhlosion Collection

A multi-era Typhlosion collection does not require starting at the top. The BREAKthrough holo at under $10 covers the XY era cleanly. A Japanese VSTAR PSA 10 at $35 fills the SWSH slot.

One Delta Species card, even the more accessible 12/101 holo at $61, represents the EX era's most distinctive Typhlosion. For the Hisuian tier, the SV-era cards are the most budget-friendly entry in the entire lineup.

The WOTC era is a separate chapter. Neo Genesis 1st Edition examples sit at a premium that belongs on a different timeline, but the Expedition Base Set 64/165 holo offers a more accessible approach to the same era.

The Hisuian form is what separates this collection from a standard Johto starter build. No other Johto starter's collection requires a regional variant with a fundamentally different typing. That is the argument for building this one: it covers more ground than Meganium or Feraligatr can offer, and the rarest pieces are in formats that still have liquidity.
