Lost Origin vs Silver Tempest ETB: Which to Buy (2026)

Pokémon TCG Lost Origin Elite Trainer Box
Pokémon TCG Sword & Shield Lost Origin Elite Trainer Box · $215.00 USD

Buy Lost Origin if you want the most competitively relevant SWSH-era set, anchored by Giratina VSTAR (Lost Origin, September 9, 2022), at a slightly higher secondary floor. Buy Silver Tempest if the Trainer Gallery sub-set and Lugia VSTAR matter more, and the pack-opening variety is a priority.

Where Lost Origin wins

The strongest single card of the era

Giratina VSTAR is the pull that made Lost Origin memorable. Its Star Requiem Ability lets you take up to 10 Prize cards by placing 10 damage counters on any Pokémon you like, provided you have 10 cards in your Lost Zone. It is not a subtle card.

The Alternate Art version (LOR 131) is one of the most sought-after pieces of SWSH-era artwork, depicting Giratina against a fractured red sky.

The LostBox tournament legacy

Lost Origin is where the LostBox archetype was born. Comfey (LOR 079), combined with Giratina VSTAR, became the defining deck of 2022 to 2023 Regionals. It did not rely on the typical V vs VSTAR damage race.

Instead, it fed cards into the Lost Zone every turn to fuel its win condition, which was unprecedented in Standard at the time.

For players who want context when they read about SWSH competitive history, Lost Origin is the set to own. Comfey alone explains a full year of tournament outcomes.

A slightly lower entry price

Standard Lost Origin ETBs are observed from $215 USD on October 12, 2026. Standard Silver Tempest ETBs start lower, around $165 USD, but the Pokémon Center Silver Tempest exclusive runs to $380 and above due to Lugia collector demand.

If you want the Pokémon Center edition of either set, Lost Origin's PC version is rarer and harder to find. See the full Lost Origin set guide for a breakdown of every product type.

Where Silver Tempest wins

The Trainer Gallery sub-set

Silver Tempest introduced the Trainer Gallery, a 30-card holofoil sub-set numbered TG01 through TG30. Each card depicts a trainer alongside their Pokémon in a shared full-art illustration, a format that does not exist anywhere else in SWSH. Unlike the regular numbered cards (1 through 195), Trainer Gallery cards appear in a separate pull slot, which means every pack technically has a second chance at a holofoil rare.

The visual diversity this creates during a pack opening is the clearest difference between these two sets. Lost Origin packs follow the standard SWSH pull structure. Silver Tempest packs can surprise you with a Trainer Gallery Full Art at any point.

Lugia VSTAR and a second strong pull

Lugia VSTAR's Alternate Art (SIT 211) is the headlining chase card. Beyond Lugia, Silver Tempest also contains Regidrago VSTAR with its own Special Art, giving the set two distinct pull targets rather than one dominant card. For someone buying a single ETB, two potential top pulls spread the odds more evenly than Lost Origin's single Giratina VSTAR Alternate Art does.

Lower observed floor

Standard Silver Tempest ETBs start at $165 USD (observed October 12, 2026), making them the cheaper entry for someone who wants a late SWSH box to open. The full set guide at Silver Tempest SWSH12 covers every product variant including the Trainer Gallery booster bundle.

The deciding question

The choice reduces to what you want from the box.

If you play the game or want a tournament-relevant piece of SWSH history, Lost Origin is the answer. Comfey and Giratina VSTAR defined a competitive era, and no other single set from this period has the same legacy.

If you want the most visually distinctive opening experience, or if the Lugia VSTAR Alternate Art is your target, Silver Tempest is the better pick. The Trainer Gallery means every pack is slightly less predictable. That matters when you are opening a sealed box for the experience rather than targeting a single card.

If budget is the main factor, Silver Tempest wins at its $165 floor. The gap is not dramatic at the standard ETB level, but it is consistent.

Frequently asked questions

How many packs are in the Lost Origin Elite Trainer Box?

The standard Lost Origin ETB contains 8 booster packs plus a promo card, card sleeves, dividers, damage-counter dice, and a VSTAR marker. The Pokémon Center exclusive version had a different promo and additional accessories.

How many packs are in the Silver Tempest Elite Trainer Box?

The standard Silver Tempest ETB also contains 8 booster packs. The Pokémon Center exclusive Silver Tempest ETB is the version with premium accessories and a different promo card. Both are discontinued and available on the secondary market only.

What is the Trainer Gallery in Silver Tempest?

The Trainer Gallery is a 30-card holofoil sub-set numbered TG01 through TG30. Each card depicts a trainer and their Pokémon together in a single illustration. These cards appear in a separate pull slot from the regular set, which is unique to Silver Tempest among late SWSH English sets.

Which ETB has better chase cards, Lost Origin or Silver Tempest?

Lost Origin has a single dominant chase: Giratina VSTAR Alternate Art. Silver Tempest has two strong targets: Lugia VSTAR Alternate Art and Regidrago VSTAR Special Art.

If you are chasing one specific card, Lost Origin is more focused. If you want multiple chances at premium pulls, Silver Tempest spreads the odds.

Are Lost Origin and Silver Tempest ETBs still worth buying in 2026?

Both sets are out of print and fully secondary market. At $165 to $215 USD per standard ETB, neither offers the same expected value as a current-print set at MSRP.

The reason to buy either is for the specific cards, the tournament history, or the sealed collecting experience, not for pack math. For the best current ETB value, the DexHaul ETB guide covers every set currently available.
