Obsidian Flames Build and Battle Box (2023): Contents and MSRP
By Dexhaul Team · October 7, 2026 · 5 min read
The Obsidian Flames Build and Battle Box (SV03) contains a 40-card ready-to-play deck, four Obsidian Flames booster packs, and one exclusive foil promo card. The promo is one of four options: Palafin, Cleffa, Togekiss, or Mawile. MSRP was $14.99 (tcg.pokemon.com); the box released August 11, 2023, with prerelease events starting July 28, 2023.
The promo you receive is random. All four variants ship in the same box design, so there is no way to identify which promo is inside from the packaging.
This is the entry-level sealed product for the Obsidian Flames set. It was the cheapest way to open SV03 packs on release day, and the only sealed product that bundled a prerelease-legal deck.

The 40-card deck is not drawn from the booster packs. It is a separate prebuilt set, assembled by The Pokémon Company's prerelease program, designed to be playable right out of the box at a prerelease event or at home.
The four promo cards are not chase pulls from the booster packs inside the box. Palafin, Cleffa, Togekiss, and Mawile all appear in the regular Obsidian Flames booster set, but the B&B promo versions carry a special foil treatment not available in packs. None of the four promos are the set's headline Tera Charizard ex.

If you want accessories alongside your packs, the OBF Elite Trainer Box is the right choice. It includes 9 packs, a full-art Charmander promo, 65 sleeves, 45 Energy cards, and a full accessory set for $49.99 MSRP. For a breakdown of the SV03 full set, see the Obsidian Flames set guide.
Release timeline
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| July 28, 2023 | Obsidian Flames prerelease events begin at participating Prerelease Program stores (source: Bulbapedia) |
| August 11, 2023 | Obsidian Flames (SV03) full retail release; Build and Battle Box ships to all retailers |
Prerelease events ran July 28 through August 10, 2023. During that window, the Build and Battle Box was available only at stores enrolled in the Pokémon Prerelease Program, not at mass-market retailers. General retail access opened on the set launch date of August 11, 2023.
Who should buy the Obsidian Flames Build and Battle Box
This box suits three types of buyers.
First, anyone who attended a prerelease event in August 2023 and wanted to keep a sealed version as a memento. The Build and Battle Box was the prerelease product, and the four promo designs are only available in this format, not in booster packs.
Second, collectors who want the four OBF B&B promos specifically. Palafin, Cleffa, Togekiss, and Mawile are each only available in this exclusive foil treatment through this box. A full promo set of four requires four boxes, each at its own floor price observed from independent shops.
Third, buyers who want a small number of SV03 packs at the lowest possible entry point per unit. At secondary market prices, the B&B Box now runs roughly $54 to $65 for four packs, which puts the per-pack cost above loose booster prices. The promo adds collector value that partly offsets the premium.
Who should skip it
If you want the most packs for your budget, the OBF ETB or a Booster Box delivers more pack volume at lower cost per pack. The 40-card prerelease deck has no resale value as a competitive product and is not used in standard or expanded play.
Frequently asked questions
What are the four Obsidian Flames Build and Battle Box promos?
The four promo cards are Palafin, Cleffa, Togekiss, and Mawile. Each features a foil treatment not available in standard Obsidian Flames booster packs. You receive one at random; the box packaging does not indicate which promo is inside.
Can you choose which promo you get?
No. All four B&B Box variants ship in identical packaging. The promo is determined when the box is packed at the factory. Retailers and buyers have no way to identify the promo from the outside.
Is the 40-card deck tournament-legal?
The prerelease deck is legal only for prerelease-format events, which ran July 28 through August 10, 2023. It is not legal for standard, expanded, or any current tournament format. The individual cards are legal if they meet format rotation rules, but the deck as built is not a competitive deck.
How does the Build and Battle Box compare to the Booster Bundle for pack value?
At MSRP, the Booster Bundle ($19.99 for 6 packs = $3.33 per pack) was cheaper per pack than the B&B Box ($14.99 for 4 packs = $3.75 per pack). The B&B Box adds the 40-card deck, promo card, and accessories, which some buyers value; others prefer the Booster Bundle for pure pack count.
Is the Obsidian Flames Build and Battle Box still available?
Yes, independent shops carry sealed copies. Prices on DexHaul on October 7, 2026 ranged from $53.77 to $130.00 USD, with most listings between $54 and $65. The product is no longer in standard retail channels but remains available through secondary market sellers.
