Paradigm Trigger vs Silver Tempest: Japanese or English (2026)

Japanese Paradigm Trigger (S12, released October 21, 2022) and English Silver Tempest (SWSH12, released November 11, 2022) are the same era of the Sword & Shield TCG series, just 21 days apart.

Both feature Lugia VSTAR as the headline card. But the two products are different objects: different card counts, different box sizes, and one exclusive subset that exists only in English.

If you want the Lugia VSTAR pull or the Hisui-era VSTAR lineup, both routes get you there. The right choice depends on whether you care about the Trainer Gallery, pack-per-dollar math, or tournament legality.

What's different in the box

The most significant structural difference is the Trainer Gallery.

Silver Tempest includes a 30-card subset (TG01–TG30) showing Trainers alongside their partner Pokémon in special illustration art. These cards do not exist in Paradigm Trigger. A Japanese importer who opens only S12 boxes cannot pull a TG card: there is no Japanese equivalent set for that subset.

The base set size also differs substantially. Paradigm Trigger has 125 numbered cards before secret rares.

Silver Tempest has 195 numbered cards, then the 30 TG cards, then secret rares. The English set's larger pool comes partly from including cards distributed across multiple smaller Japanese releases during the SWSH era.

What's in the box Paradigm Trigger (JP) Silver Tempest (EN)
Cards per pack 5 (standard JP) 10 (standard EN)
Trainer Gallery cards Not included TG01–TG30 (30 cards, own pull rate)
Lugia VSTAR location 080/078 (secret rare above the set number) 139/195 (within the main numbered set)
Regidrago VSTAR location 077/078 (secret rare) 136/195 (main set)
Unown VSTAR location 036/078, 116/078 (in set and as secret alt art) 066/195 (main set)
Exclusive to this version Japanese full-art treatments and numbering Trainer Gallery (TG) subset

The numbering tells a lot. Lugia VSTAR is card 080/078 in Paradigm Trigger: the "/078" denominator marks it as a secret rare above the base set total.

In Silver Tempest it's 139/195, sitting inside the main numbered set. Same card, completely different collector positioning.

Alolan Vulpix VSTAR is absent from Paradigm Trigger entirely. It appears in Silver Tempest as 034/195 and as the secret rare 197/195. This card has no Japanese source in S12.

Japanese or English: which to buy

Price per card

A Paradigm Trigger booster pack observed at $6.00 USD (October 8, 2026) gives you 5 cards. That's $1.20 per card. A Silver Tempest booster pack observed at $16.00 USD gives you 10 cards: $1.60 per card.

On raw per-card cost, the Japanese pack is cheaper by about 25%. But English packs include the chance at Trainer Gallery pulls, and the 10-card format means more holo slots per pack opened.

Play legality

Japanese cards from Paradigm Trigger are not legal in standard English-language Play! Pokémon events. They are legal at unofficial events and at some local game stores that run open format nights.

If you want to play Lugia VSTAR at a sanctioned tournament, you need the English Silver Tempest version. The card is functionally identical: same VSTAR Power, same HP, same attacks. Only the language and tournament legality differ.

Language and grading

Japanese cards from this era grade consistently well. PSA and BGS accept Japanese submissions, and the language carries no grading premium or penalty. The thicker Japanese card stock (0.3 mm vs EN 0.25 mm) holds its condition better in transit, which matters for grading submissions.

Silver Tempest's Trainer Gallery cards have become sought-after graded submissions in their own right. If grading a TG Lugia VSTAR or TG Regidrago VSTAR is the goal, English Silver Tempest is the only source.

Completing the Silver Tempest collection

Silver Tempest is the final Sword & Shield English set. There is no SWSH13.

Collectors building a complete SWSH English run need Silver Tempest as the last entry in that arc. Paradigm Trigger cannot substitute for it in that context, even though both sets share most of the same VSTAR lineup.

The deciding question

Buy Japanese Paradigm Trigger if you want the Hisui-era VSTAR pulls in Japanese card stock, prefer the lower per-card cost, or are building a Japanese set collection. The box is deep at 30 packs, and the secret rare numbering (Lugia VSTAR at 080/078) makes for a distinct collector experience versus the English version.

Buy English Silver Tempest if you need tournament-legal cards, want access to the 30-card Trainer Gallery subset, or are completing a Sword & Shield English run. It is the only English set in this era, and the Trainer Gallery cards have no Japanese source.

Both sets remain in stock across independent shops. See the Lugia VSTAR retrospective and the Silver Tempest set guide for more on the English side. For other Japanese import comparisons, the Pokémon 151 Japanese vs English guide covers how JP and EN numbering diverges in the Scarlet & Violet era.

Frequently asked questions

Is Paradigm Trigger the same as Silver Tempest?

They share the same Lugia VSTAR era and most of the same chase VSTAR lineup, but they are different products. Paradigm Trigger is the Japanese source set (S12, October 2022); Silver Tempest is the English equivalent (SWSH12, November 2022). Silver Tempest has 195 numbered cards versus Paradigm Trigger's 125, plus an exclusive 30-card Trainer Gallery subset.

Can I use Paradigm Trigger cards in English tournaments?

Japanese-language cards are not legal in sanctioned Play! Pokémon events that require English cards. They are legal at unofficial local events that allow any language.

Does Paradigm Trigger have the Trainer Gallery cards?

No. The Trainer Gallery (TG01–TG30) is an English-only subset exclusive to Silver Tempest. No Japanese equivalent set contains the TG cards.

Which has Lugia VSTAR: Paradigm Trigger or Silver Tempest?

Both. Lugia VSTAR is 080/078 in Paradigm Trigger (a secret rare) and 139/195 in Silver Tempest (an ultra rare within the main set). The card text and stats are functionally identical; only the language, card number, and tournament legality differ.

Is Silver Tempest worth buying in 2026?

It is the only English Sword & Shield set with the Trainer Gallery subset and the final SWSH English set overall, which gives it ongoing demand from set completionists. For Lugia VSTAR pulls specifically, Paradigm Trigger offers lower per-card cost at current observed prices.
