Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are Pokémon #144, #145, and #146, the three Kanto legendary birds introduced in Generation I. Each one has a distinct collector identity in 2026: different price floors, different ceiling products, and different merchandise depth. This guide maps all three so you can decide where to start or where to fill gaps in your collection.
The short version: Articuno leads in plush and aesthetic appeal. Zapdos has the deepest TCG pedigree and the most affordable vintage holo entry point of the three. Moltres has the largest premium item in the current catalogue by a significant margin.
Articuno: Start with the Plush
Articuno is the Ice-type legendary, and it consistently leads the trio in aesthetic reputation.
That visual appeal translates directly into merchandise.
The Sanei All Star Collection Articuno 9" plush ($39.99) is the benchmark non-TCG item for Articuno collectors. Sanei's All Star line is one of the few third-party plush lines with consistent collector community endorsement for accuracy to the original Pokémon design. At nine inches, it is large enough to anchor a shelf display without taking the space that oversized play plush require.
For TCG collectors, the Articuno (161/159) from SV09 Journey Together is the most accessible current card at $23. The beyond-the-set numbering signals a Special Illustration Rare print. Serebii's Journey Together set list confirms this card's place in the expansion.
It is the cheapest entry into Articuno's modern TCG presence.
Articuno's Base Set holo (2/102) is the vintage anchor. In PSA 9 condition, Base Set Articuno has historically priced higher than Zapdos at the same grade because the supply of high-grade copies is tighter. That gap is exactly why Zapdos is the smarter vintage starting point for the trio.
Zapdos: The Best Vintage Entry of the Three
Zapdos (016/102) from the Base Set is the most affordable of the three original legendary bird holos in played condition.
The current catalogue lists it at $25 in Moderately Played grade. That number matters: Base Set holos are difficult to find below $30 in any usable condition. Zapdos achieves this partly because high-grade PSA copies reach market more regularly than Articuno or Moltres at the same grades, keeping the played floor accessible.
The Generations reprint (029/83 from XY: Generations) offers a second Zapdos holo at $32. Generations was a limited-quantity set released for the 20th Anniversary in 2016.
The non-obvious insight for Zapdos collecting: Generations singles can price close to or above their Base Set equivalents at the same condition grade, precisely because the print run was small. If you are buying for display rather than pursuing a raw grade, the Generations copy at $32 delivers essentially the same visual impact for a modest premium over the played Base Set version.
For a premium sealed product, the Pokémon 151 Zapdos ex Collection Box ($119.99) is the current high-end Zapdos option. The 151 expansion revisited the original 151 Kanto Pokédex, and all three legendary birds received representation. The box pairs the Zapdos ex card with booster packs from the 151 set.
Moltres: The Highest Ceiling in the Catalogue
Moltres has something neither Articuno nor Zapdos has in 2026: a $445 item in active listings.
Team Rocket's Moltres ex Ultra Premium Collection ($444.99) is the anchor product for the character right now. It launched as part of the 2025 Team Rocket revival, pairing Moltres with the classic villain faction.
Team Rocket first appeared in the TCG with the Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge sets (1999–2000), where Blaine's Moltres Holo and Rocket's cards established the faction's presence. The 2025 revival draws on that legacy and positions Moltres as Team Rocket's flagship legendary.
The UPC includes three ultra-rare Moltres ex cards, foil cards, accessories, and booster packs from the Destined Rivals set.
If the UPC is beyond budget, the Team Rocket's Moltres ex single from Destined Rivals (229/182) lists at $88.80. It is a Special Illustration Rare print with the beyond-the-set numbering that signals premium art treatment.
The SV10 Glory of Team Rocket version (124/098) carries the same art at $101. Both are the same Moltres ex illustration.
The difference is set numbering and the parent expansion: English players need the Destined Rivals print for TPCi-format events; Japanese format players need the SV10 version. Buy for the format you play, not purely on price.
When You Want All Three
The Scale World figure set brings all three birds together for $30.
Scale World is a Bandai collectible line. The three legendary birds are sculpted at consistent scale and designed to be displayed as a trio. At $30 for the complete set, it is the most cost-efficient way to own a physical representation of each bird without committing to separate singles, plush, or figure purchases for each character.

It is the accessible entry format if you want to add Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres to a TCG collection without hunting three separate booster packs.
