The Kanto Legendary Birds in 2026: Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres Cards Worth Collecting
By Dexhaul Team · September 3, 2026
Three Kanto legendary birds have cards confirmed in the Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration set, dropping September 16.
Zapdos (#55/128), Articuno (#18/128), and Moltres (#11/128) are each represented in the new set, with the card list confirmed at Serebii's 30th Celebration database. All three appear as standard cards at 120HP, not in the Futuristic Rare tier. In a set built entirely around all-foil packs, every pull including these three arrives with the anniversary foil treatment that makes them look unlike any previous printing of the same Pokémon.
That foil distinction matters for collectors tracking the complete history of these cards. The 30th Celebration versions are not reprintings of the vintage Base Set or Fossil originals. They are new cards with a design built for the anniversary, which means collectors who want the full picture for each bird now have one more distinct version to account for.

Zapdos: The Base Set bird
Zapdos's original TCG printing arrived in the 1999 Base Set at card #16/102, as documented in Bulbapedia's Zapdos TCG entry.
That placement in the Base Set is the single most important fact for understanding Zapdos's vintage pricing. The original Base Set is the highest-valued English vintage set by secondary market consensus, and its 16-card holo subset shares space with Charizard (#4/102), Blastoise (#2/102), Venusaur (#15/102), and the other original holos. Every card in that holo list carries a price premium that no subsequent expansion set has matched.
Zapdos Base Set #16/102 graded in high condition consistently trades above Fossil-set holos of comparable rarity. That gap comes entirely from the set, not from Zapdos's own in-game or collector status.
The 30th Celebration Zapdos at #55/128 is a separate modern printing. Budget collectors who want Zapdos represented in the new set can pull it without targeting the Futuristic Rare tier.
Articuno: The undervalued entry point
Articuno debuted in the 2000 Fossil expansion at #2/62, the second holo slot in the set's print order.
The Fossil expansion is the second major set of the English Pokémon TCG. Fossil holos are legitimately vintage cards, but they trade below Base Set holos across the board.
That pricing gap is a function of the original set's status, not of the Fossil cards themselves. Articuno #2/62 is a strong vintage card: its position as the second card in the Fossil list gives it a visible place in any binder. The secondary market has consistently priced Fossil holos below Base Set holos, which makes Articuno a more accessible vintage pickup than Zapdos for collectors working within a real budget.
In Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery, Galarian Articuno appears as card GG01. The Galarian form is a Psychic-type in the TCG, a distinct departure from the Water-type original. Collectors who want both the Kanto-form and the Galarian-form Articuno are looking at two separate product targets: the 30th Celebration packs for the 120HP standard card, and Crown Zenith packs for the Galarian Gallery version.
Moltres: The Fire bird at a Fossil price
Moltres arrived in the Fossil expansion at #12/62 and sits at #11/128 in the 30th Celebration set.
Its Fossil holo follows the same pricing pattern as Articuno: accessible for vintage collectors, with the same ceiling that keeps all Fossil cards below Base Set prices. Moltres specifically has had fewer competitive moments since the Base Set era compared to Zapdos, which reinforces its position as the most accessible vintage entry of the three birds. A collector who wants all three legendary bird holos from the original era can typically acquire both Articuno and Moltres for less than the cost of the single Zapdos Base Set holo.
The 30th Celebration Moltres at #11/128 is a Fire-type card at 120HP, printed early in the set's card list. Its placement in the set reflects the first-generation ordering that Moltres shares with Ho-Oh (#12) just after it.
Galarian Moltres appears in Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery as GG03, where it is a Darkness-type, a complete type-shift from the original. The Galarian Moltres artwork in the Gallery uses a deep, atmospheric color palette that a number of collectors have noted as one of the stronger art styles in the subset.
Crown Zenith and the Galarian forms
Crown Zenith introduced Galarian regional forms for all three legendary birds in its Galarian Gallery subset: Galarian Zapdos (GG02, Fighting-type), Galarian Articuno (GG01, Psychic-type), and Galarian Moltres (GG03, Darkness-type).
One detail that catches collectors off guard: Galarian Gallery cards appear in standard Crown Zenith booster packs. There is no separate Galarian Gallery product required.
Any Crown Zenith pack, purchased individually or as part of an ETB, gives you a chance at GG cards. This is different from how some other subsets have worked, where the chase cards were tied to premium-tier products only.
That pack structure means the cheapest per-pack entry to Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery is the individual booster. For collectors specifically targeting the Galarian bird trio, individual Crown Zenith packs are worth considering alongside the ETB options.
Galarian Zapdos GG02 has historically commanded a slight premium among the three Galarian birds. Its Fighting-type designation is the sharpest departure from the original: Galarian Zapdos is a ground-running bird that shed the Electric type entirely in the Galar regional form.
Which bird is the best collector entry point
For vintage collecting, Articuno and Moltres offer better value than Zapdos at equivalent collector prestige.
All three original holo cards carry the same status: first-print holo of a Kanto legendary in the original English TCG run. But Zapdos's Base Set placement inflates its price above what the rarity alone would justify.
Articuno and Moltres are Fossil holos, and Fossil trades at a discount to Base Set across all cards. A collector targeting all three vintage legendary bird holos can typically acquire Articuno and Moltres together for a cost comparable to the single Zapdos Base Set holo.
That pricing gap is the most useful piece of information for anyone starting a legendary bird collection.
For modern collecting via the 30th Celebration, all three birds are roughly equal targets. Zapdos (#55/128), Articuno (#18/128), and Moltres (#11/128) appear in standard non-ex slots with identical 120HP and similar positions across the card list.
A booster pack gives you equal odds at any of the three. No one bird requires a premium product tier to pull.
The Galarian Gallery versions in Crown Zenith sit in a similar range to each other as well. Galarian Zapdos GG02 has commanded a slight premium at times, but all three are accessible compared to the Charizard, Lugia V, or Pikachu VMAX GG cards at the top of the Crown Zenith secondary market.
