Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red vs Blue Rescue Team (2026)

Buy Blue Rescue Team (Nintendo DS) if you have a DS and want the complete experience, including exclusive bonus dungeons not in the GBA version. Buy Red Rescue Team (Game Boy Advance) if you want to pay less or only have a GBA.

Both versions tell the same story, star the same Pokémon, and were released on the same day: September 18, 2006 in North America (Serebii). The difference between them is platform and a handful of content exclusive to each cartridge.

This guide covers what each version includes, where Blue wins, where Red wins, and which is the right pick for you in 2026.

Both games play identically in the main story. The GBA version tends to cost more loose (cartridge-only) due to lower supply; the DS version runs cheaper on average because the DS library was larger.

Where Blue Rescue Team wins

Hardware advantage

Blue Rescue Team runs on the Nintendo DS, which has a backlit screen versus the original GBA's unlit screen. Playing the GBA cartridge on an original Game Boy Advance in a dim room is difficult; the DS removes that constraint.

The DS's dual-screen layout is used in Blue for the menu on the bottom touch screen, making inventory and map management slightly smoother than on GBA.

Extra bonus dungeons and Friend Areas

Blue includes exclusive bonus dungeons and Friend Areas not present in Red. These are unlocked after completing the main story, so they extend the post-game meaningfully.

The Rescue Team DX remake (Nintendo Switch, 2020) is based on the Blue version content, which confirms Blue as the definitive build of this game.

Typically cheaper

Blue runs $19–$40 loose on October 19, 2026 depending on condition, compared to Red which is harder to find in the $30–$50 range. Red Complete In Box copies reach $299.90 at specialty shops, reflecting lower supply.

Where Red Rescue Team wins

GBA-only hardware

Red is your only option if you are playing on an original Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP, or Game Boy Micro.

Note that Blue can also run on the original DS lite, DSi, and 3DS family systems, which play GBA cartridges too, so a 3DS owner can play both versions on a single system.

Version-exclusive Friend Area Pokémon

Red has a small number of Pokémon that join as partners exclusively in that version's Friend Areas. If you want to fill out the complete in-game Friend Area roster, you need both versions or trades from someone with the other game.

In practice, this matters only for completionists. The main story and core Pokémon roster are identical.

The deciding question

Platform first. If you have a Game Boy Advance and no DS, buy Red.

If you have a DS (any model), buy Blue. That is the correct choice in almost every scenario.

For collectors: Red Complete In Box is rarer and commands higher prices ($149–$299 at specialty shops). If you collect sealed or CIB retro games, Red is the more interesting piece to track down.

For players: Blue is the recommended version at nearly every price point. The DS hardware makes it more comfortable to play, the bonus dungeons add post-game content, and it runs cheaper in most loose conditions.

If you want to revisit this era without hunting cartridges, the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX (Nintendo Switch, March 6, 2020) is a full remake of Blue Rescue Team with updated visuals and QoL features. Check the buying guides for Switch game comparisons to find other titles in the same era.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mystery Dungeon Red and Blue Rescue Team?

Red Rescue Team runs on Game Boy Advance and Blue Rescue Team runs on Nintendo DS. They share the same main story but Blue adds exclusive bonus dungeons and Friend Areas. The DS version also benefits from a backlit screen and dual-screen menus.

Is Blue Rescue Team better than Red?

For most players, yes. Blue has more post-game content, runs on more accessible hardware (any Nintendo DS or 3DS), and costs less on average. The only reason to prefer Red is hardware compatibility with a GBA-only setup or collecting the rarer GBA cartridge.

Are Red and Blue Rescue Team the same game?

The main story is identical. Both games follow the same plot, include the same starter choices, and end at the same point. The differences are platform, a small number of version-exclusive Friend Area Pokémon, and Blue's additional bonus dungeons.

What Pokémon are in Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team?

Both Red and Blue include all 386 Pokémon from Generations I through III (the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and early Pokémon included as of Generation III). The version-exclusive Pokémon are restricted to specific Friend Areas, not the main dungeon runs (Serebii).

Is there a remake of Mystery Dungeon Red or Blue Rescue Team?

Yes. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX was released on Nintendo Switch on March 6, 2020 worldwide (Serebii). It is a full remake based on Blue Rescue Team's content, with new art, rebalanced gameplay, and added QoL features.
