Psychic-Type Pokémon TCG Cards: A Collector's Guide to Every Era

Psychic-type Pokémon cards have anchored the TCG since card #10 of the very first set, and they headline the biggest release of 2026.

If you collect Psychic-type Pokémon TCG cards, you have six distinct eras to explore, with targets from under $20 to above $400. The active headline is Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex 281/217 from Ascended Heroes, an SIR that launched August 28 and drew immediate collector attention. Here is how each era breaks down.

The WotC Era: 1999-2003

The Psychic type entered the English TCG in 1999 with Base Set, which Wizards of the Coast released in North America that January. The key Psychic-type holos were Mewtwo (#10/102), Alakazam (#1/102), and, in the Fossil expansion later that year, Gengar (#5/62).

Mewtwo occupying the #10 slot in a set with only 16 holo rares made it one of the defining pulls of the era. Alakazam at #1 benefited from alphabetical ordering but earned its position: the card was a genuine playable in early casual formats.

For WotC-era Psychic cards, condition is the deciding variable. First Edition copies of Base Set Mewtwo and Alakazam carry a premium over Unlimited printings. Shadowless copies sit in between.

A graded PSA 7 Unlimited Base Set Mewtwo is a solid entry for the WotC era. PSA 9 and 10 First Edition copies are centerpiece purchases, not starting points.

The EX Era: Gardevoir's First Competitive Moment (2003-2007)

In 2003, the EX Sandstorm and Hidden Legends sets introduced Gardevoir and Gardevoir ex to the TCG. The combination became one of the strongest competitive decks of the Ruby/Sapphire era.

For collectors, the EX-era Gardevoir ex cards from Hidden Legends are affordable vintage finds. They are not yet in strong demand compared to the modern Scarlet & Violet SIR, which makes them a low-cost way to trace the character's history. Budget-conscious Gardevoir collectors often build a timeline from these Hidden Legends copies forward through the eras to the current SVI card.

The XY Era: Mewtwo EX BREAKthrough (2015-2018)

The XY era turned Mewtwo EX into the collector target that still holds value today.

XY BREAKthrough, released in November 2015, introduced Mewtwo EX in a regular full-art form (64/162) and a Secret Full Art version numbered 164/162. The Secret Full Art uses a gold-bordered etched foil finish that makes it one of the most visually distinctive Psychic cards of the XY era. Secondary market prices have held at $150 to $188 for years, in part because the art does not date the way some competitive card illustrations do.

Mega Mewtwo EX also appears in BREAKthrough in X and Y variants. Both are collecting targets for anyone who tracks the XY Mega EX era across types, and they fit naturally alongside the Mega Gardevoir ex from the current Mega Evolution series if you collect by generation rather than by individual character.

The GX Era: Hidden Fates and the Shiny Vault (2019)

The GX era produced the best Mewtwo art since Base Set: the Shiny Vault version in Hidden Fates.

Hidden Fates launched in September 2019. The Shiny Vault chase subset gave familiar Pokémon chromatic redesigns. Mewtwo GX SV59/SV94 depicts a luminescent blue-tinted Mewtwo against a pure black field, a stark departure from the silver-grey palette of every preceding Mewtwo card.

The card sold out at retail almost immediately and has traded at $131 to $156 since then.

The Mewtwo & Mew GX Tag Team card from Unified Minds rounds out the era. It puts both Legendaries on a single card, which appeals to collectors who want a compressed representation of the Psychic type's two most iconic characters in one slot.

The VMAX and VSTAR Era: Crown Zenith (2021-2023)

The Sword & Shield era gave Mewtwo a V, VMAX, and VSTAR treatment before rotating out, with the Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery producing the generation's premium Psychic card.

Mewtwo VSTAR GG44/GG70, released in January 2023, trades between $275 and $290. The Galarian Gallery is Crown Zenith's equivalent of the Hidden Fates Shiny Vault: a chase subset with elevated production treatment. The VSTAR card uses a full-bleed cosmic scene that reads more like a collectible art print than a game card, which has held collector interest even after the card rotated out of the standard format.

The Scarlet & Violet Era: Gardevoir ex's Unusual Position

Gardevoir ex 245/198 Special Illustration Rare from Pokémon TCG Scarlet and Violet Base Set
Gardevoir ex 245/198 SIR (Pokémon TCG Scarlet & Violet Base Set) · $64.85 USD

Gardevoir ex 245/198 from Scarlet & Violet Base Set holds a distinction almost no collector-tier card achieves: it is simultaneously an active tournament staple and a premium collectible.

The SIR uses a full-art watercolor treatment that ranks among the best art in the Scarlet & Violet era. At $64 to $75, it is priced well below most SIRs in the $100-plus range. That affordability is notable: the card has been one of the consistently top-performing archetypes tracked at Limitless TCG throughout the SV format.

Most Special Illustration Rares that reach collector-tier pricing are format-retired by the time buyers notice them. The SVI Gardevoir ex SIR is still format-legal, still winning regional tournaments, and still under $100. That combination is unusual, and it means collectors have a narrow window where a competitively relevant card is priced for collectors rather than speculators.

For Mega Evolution collectors, Mega Gardevoir ex from the current Ascended Heroes set extends the Gardevoir collecting timeline from 2003 all the way to 2026.

What September 16 Means for Psychic Collectors

The 30th Celebration set, launching September 16, 2026, features two Psychic-type Legendaries as its Futuristic Rare cards: Mew ex and Mewtwo ex.

The Futuristic Rare (FUR) rarity is making its TCG debut in this set. Both FUR cards were illustrated by YOSHIROTTEN in a style unlike any previous Pokémon TCG art, and they sit at the top of the 30th Celebration pull hierarchy.

This is the first time a single set has placed two Psychic-type Legendaries in the highest rarity tier simultaneously. For the full breakdown, the Futuristic Rare guide covers every format and what FUR means structurally.

For Psychic-type collectors, the 30th Celebration is the most consequential TCG release of 2026.

Where to Start

Entry level: Gardevoir ex 245/198 SVI SIR at $64 to $75, or the standard Mewtwo GX from Sun & Moon at around $19. Both are accessible, highly recognizable cards that establish the type in your collection.

Mid-range: Mewtwo GX SV59 from Hidden Fates Shiny Vault ($131 to $156) or Mewtwo EX 164/162 Secret Full Art from XY BREAKthrough ($150 to $188). Both have held their price range for years without sharp volatility.

High end: Mewtwo VSTAR GG44 Crown Zenith Galarian Gallery ($275 to $290) or Team Rocket's Mewtwo ex 281/217 SIR from Ascended Heroes ($309 to $445). Both are post-rotation collector cards priced for the display case rather than the binder.
