The Pokémon TCG First Partner Illustration Collection is a three-series release tied to Pokémon's 30th anniversary in 2026. Each box contains three foil promo cards drawn in the illustration rare style, two booster packs, and a sticker sheet. The product covers starter Pokémon from eight of the nine main-series regions spread across the three series, with one promo card per region per box.

Series 1: Kanto, Sinnoh, and Alola
Series 1 covers the widest nostalgia range of the three boxes. It features the Kanto starters (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle), the Sinnoh starters (Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup), and the Alola starters (Rowlet, Litten, Popplio).
The Kanto card is the most sought-after in this series. Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle appear together in a single scene, which is an unusual format for a foil promo card. The Sinnoh and Alola cards follow the same compositional approach: three starters, one painted landscape, printed in foil on an oversized card.
If you only buy one series and your Pokémon history starts with Red and Blue, or if you want the generation most tied to the 1996 original release, Series 1 is the natural pick.
Series 2: Johto, Unova, and Galar
Series 2 covers three generations that defined Pokémon's transition from 2D to fully 3D gameplay. The box features the Johto starters (Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile from Gold and Silver), the Unova starters (Snivy, Tepig, Oshawott from Black and White), and the Galar starters (Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble from Sword and Shield).
Johto has the strongest secondary collector following of this trio, which makes the Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile card the most-discussed in Series 2. Unova has a dedicated fan base from Black and White that tends to underperform on secondary markets relative to its actual popularity, which keeps this series priced more accessibly than Series 1 at most sellers.
Series 3: Hoenn and Kalos
Series 3 covers Hoenn and Kalos: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip from Ruby and Sapphire, and Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie from X and Y. Both regions have dedicated fan communities and some of the most recognized starter designs across the franchise.
Torchic holds the highest individual recognition of the Series 3 starters: it and its evolutions appear across Mega Evolution products and competitive TCG history more than any other Hoenn starter. Froakie from Kalos is similarly high-profile, given Greninja's presence in Smash Bros. and its recurring role as a competitive TCG archetype.
Series 3 lists from around $40 to $55 USD at most independent sellers, making it the most consistently priced of the three, though stock depth varies by region.
The Paldea Gap: One Region Missing
Across all three series, the collection covers eight of the nine main-series regions. Paldea, the region introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet in 2022, is absent. Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly do not appear in any current series.
Whether a Series 4 featuring Paldea starters is planned is not confirmed. The collection was announced as part of the 30th Anniversary campaign, which does not commit to a specific series count. Collectors building toward a complete nine-region arc in this illustration style should note the gap before purchasing all three series as a set.
Some retailers also sell individual booster packs from the collection rather than the full box. These packs carry the same illustration promo cards inside, so they are a viable entry point if you want a single region's card without committing to all three in a series.
Why the Artwork Format Matters for Collectors
The promo cards in this collection share the same full-art painted style as the Illustration Rare pull tier in the Scarlet and Violet TCG era. That tier features large, scene-based artwork that breaks the traditional card border. It is one of the most discussed formats in recent TCG set design.
The key difference here is that these promos are not random pulls. Pulling a genuine Illustration Rare from a Scarlet and Violet booster involves uncertain odds and variable cost depending on the set. Each First Partner box delivers three of these illustration-style cards with zero variance. For collectors who care about the art format more than the pack-opening experience, that is a materially different value calculation.

Which Series to Buy
Series 1 is the right starting point for most buyers. Kanto, Sinnoh, and Alola cover the broadest nostalgia arc, and the Kanto card carries the highest collector recognition of any single promo in the line.
Series 2 makes the most sense if Gold and Silver or Sword and Shield are the generations you played first. It also tends to be the most accessible price point across independent sellers.
Series 3 is for Hoenn and Kalos fans and for anyone pursuing all three boxes as a matched set. Buying all three together is a coherent collector position: the 30th Anniversary framing positions the collection as a unified arc, and the three boxes together cover eight generations in a consistent illustration style.
That said, Series 4 covering Paldea starters has not been announced. If completing all nine regions matters to you, it is worth waiting to see whether the product line extends before committing to all three.
