Pokémon TCG Mega Moonlit Tins: What's Inside and Which One to Buy

The Mega Moonlit Tins landed on June 5, 2026, bringing two new foil promo cards to the Mega Evolution Series: Mega Gengar ex and Mega Clefable ex. Each tin comes with one of those promos and four booster packs split across two Mega Evolution expansions.
If you're trying to decide between the Gengar tin, the Clefable tin, or the set of two, this guide covers exactly what you get and which option makes the most sense for different buyers.
What's Inside Each Tin
Both tins share the same structure. Open either one and you get: one foil promo card, four booster packs, and a code card for Pokémon TCG Live.
The four booster packs are split between two Mega Evolution expansions: two packs from Perfect Order and two from Chaos Rising, according to Bulbapedia's confirmed pack list for these tins. That split matters: it means one tin functions as a sampler across two different sets, not a deep run into a single expansion.
The promo itself is the main differentiator. Each tin's promo is a numbered MEP Black Star Promo exclusive to that product. You can't pull these cards from booster packs.
Mega Gengar ex vs. Mega Clefable ex: The Card Comparison
The two promo cards are very different in design and play role.
Mega Gengar ex is a Darkness-type Stage 2 Pokémon with 350 HP. It evolves from Haunter, which itself evolves from Ghastly, making it one of the deeper evolution chains in the Mega Evolution era. The promo version (MEP Promo 073) carries the same artwork treatment as its Phantasmal Flames set counterpart.
Mega Clefable ex is a Psychic-type Stage 1 with 320 HP, evolving from Clefairy. Its promo number is MEP Promo 072. This card first appeared in Perfect Order as card 031/088, making the Moonlit Tin one of the easier ways to get a foil alternate version.
One fact worth knowing: Mega Clefable has no equivalent in the mainline Pokémon video games. Clefable never received a Mega Evolution in the original XY or Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire releases. This is a Mega form created specifically for the 2025–2026 TCG series, which makes the card genuinely new to competitive history. Collectors who prioritize TCG-original designs tend to be drawn to cards like this.
Mega Gengar, by contrast, has deep roots in XY-era Pokémon lore, so its Mega form feels familiar. Ghost-type collectors and competitive players who already run Darkness decks will find more natural application for the Gengar promo.
Individual Tin, Set of 2, or Case?
This is where pricing does the work for you.
Individual tins range from $29 to $43 USD depending on the seller and which variant. The Clefable tin tends to price lower than the Gengar tin at most sellers: Hobbiesville lists Clefable at $29 and Gengar at $36, a $7 spread. If you only want one specific Pokémon, buying the individual tin makes the most sense.
The set of 2 from Zulus Games at $49.99 is notably efficient. Buying both tins separately at Hobbiesville's prices costs $65. The set saves you $15 on paper and bundles both promos in one order. If you want both cards or you're buying as a gift and aren't sure which Pokémon the recipient prefers, the set of 2 is the cleaner choice.
The case option (six tins, typically a mix of both variants) runs $149.95–$149.99 from Geekery Games and GuuBuu Hobby. A case works for store owners, tournament prize support, or collectors building a trade stack. For a personal collection, the set of 2 is almost always the better value.
Watch Out for "Promo May Vary" Listings
A small number of sellers list these tins without specifying which promo is included. The listing title "Promo May Vary" means you could receive either the Gengar tin or the Clefable tin. This usually happens when a seller is fulfilling from case stock and doesn't pre-sort by variant.
If the specific Pokémon matters to you, read the listing title carefully before adding to cart. Listings that name Mega Gengar ex or Mega Clefable ex explicitly in the title are selling a specific variant. When in doubt, message the seller before purchasing.
How the Moonlit Tins Fit the Mega Evolution Wave
The Mega Moonlit Tins arrived roughly six months after the first Mega Evolution main expansion launched in September 2025. By mid-2026, the series had grown to include multiple expansions: the original Mega Evolution set, Chaos Rising, Perfect Order, Phantasmal Flames, and the ME05 wave launching in August 2026.
The Moonlit Tins sit in a different category from the ME05 Mega Forces Tins (which feature Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Zeraora ex, and Mega Dragonite ex releasing August 28) and the Ascended Heroes Tins. The Moonlit Tins are not prerelease or launch products: they're standalone promo tins designed to deliver two specific fan-favorite Pokémon cards at an accessible price point. There's no release-window urgency attached to them.
The booster packs inside (Perfect Order and Chaos Rising) are mid-series expansions, so the Moonlit Tins also double as a way to open cards from sets that aren't the current flagship release. If you're building or completing either of those sets alongside a specific promo, one tin gives you packs and the chase card simultaneously.
