Pokémon TCG My First Battle: Contents and How to Play (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Pokémon TCG My First Battle contains two 17-card mini decks, two playmats, a large metallic coin, a damage counter sheet, six Prize tokens, and a rulebook. Both variants retail for $9.99 MSRP.
It launched September 29, 2023, and comes in two character pairings: Pikachu & Bulbasaur, or Charmander & Squirtle. The contents are identical across both variants.
What's inside
Each 17-card deck is pre-built and ready to play straight from the box. No sorting, no deck-building, and no preparation beyond laying out the playmats.
| Item | Quantity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mini deck | 2 | 17 cards each; one per player; pre-built |
| Playmat | 2 | Printed game mat, one per player |
| Large metallic Pokémon coin | 1 | Used for coin-flip attack effects |
| Damage counter sheet | 1 | Punchout counters for tracking HP damage |
| Prize tokens | 6 | Three per player; used to track wins |
| Rulebook | 1 | Illustrated simplified rules for ages 4+ |
The 17-card mini deck format is unique in the official Pokémon TCG range. Standard decks are 60 cards, and the Battle Academy uses 40-card tutorial decks designed for older learners. At 17 cards, My First Battle strips the game to attacks, HP damage, and the Prize token win condition, with no trainer cards or energy card management in play.
The large metallic coin is a deliberate design choice. It is considerably bigger than a standard Pokémon coin, making it easy for young players to hold and flip with one hand. Coin flips determine certain attack effects, the same mechanic used in the full TCG.

How to play
My First Battle uses a simplified subset of the full Pokémon TCG rules. The official Pokémon TCG how-to-play guide covers the standard format in full; My First Battle ships with its own illustrated rulebook built around pictures and numbered steps, designed so a parent and child can get through a first game with no prior TCG knowledge.
Each player starts with their full 17-card mini deck already in play, with three Prize tokens in reserve. When one player's attack reduces an opposing Pokémon's HP to zero, they claim one Prize token. The first player to collect all three tokens wins.
There is no hand to manage, no benched Pokémon to track, and no energy card attachment step. A complete game typically runs 10 to 15 minutes, even on the very first attempt.
The punchout damage counter sheet tracks HP lost during battle. Counters are placed directly on the Pokémon card to show how much damage it has taken. It works the same way as a standard TCG damage counter, but in a larger, easier-to-handle size that a four-year-old can place with confidence.
How it compares to other beginner sets
My First Battle sits below every other official Pokémon TCG beginner product on both price and complexity. It is the only one officially rated for ages 4 and up; every other starter product assumes a player ready for the full rulebook.
| Product | Cards | MSRP | Age | Key difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| My First Battle | 34 (2×17) | $9.99 | 4+ | Simplified rules; mini decks; no energy management |
| Battle Academy | 230+ | ~$25–$50 | 6+ | Full tutorial mode; three trainer decks; complete ruleset |
| League Battle Deck | 60 | $29.99 | 6+ | Tournament-legal 60-card deck; no tutorial content |
For a player ready to step up from My First Battle, the Battle Academy guide covers that product in full. The Pokémon TCG battle decks guide covers every current ready-to-play 60-card format.
Who it's for, and who should skip it
My First Battle is the right choice for a child ages 4 to 7 who has never touched a Pokémon TCG product. The minimal card count, coin-based gameplay, and illustrated rulebook make first games accessible even when a parent is new to Pokémon too.
Skip it if the player already understands the standard Pokémon TCG. At 17 cards per deck there is no meaningful gameplay for anyone familiar with 60-card formats. Battle Academy or any League Battle Deck is a stronger fit from age 6 up.
Skip it as a collecting purchase too. My First Battle cards are not tournament-legal and carry no standard set symbol. Every card is fixed; there are no booster pulls, Illustration Rares, SIRs, or chase variants to find.
A gift worth picking up at $9.99
At $9.99, My First Battle sits comfortably inside a stocking or alongside a larger present. The character pairing makes personalising easy: Pikachu & Bulbasaur for the child who already loves the anime, Charmander & Squirtle for the fire-starter fan.
Picking up both variants (under $20 together) gives a first-time player all four original Starter Pokémon and deck variety for replay. It pairs naturally alongside a Battle Academy for a child starting to grow into the full Pokémon TCG format.
