Amazing Volt Tackle (S4, 2020): English Equivalent Vivid Voltage
By Dexhaul Team · October 12, 2026 · 5 min read
Japanese S4 Amazing Volt Tackle (released Sep 18, 2020) became English Vivid Voltage (SWSH04, Nov 13, 2020). Serebii lists this set as "Astonishing Volt Tackle," but the official Japanese name is Amazing Volt Tackle per the Pokémon Card Game website. English Vivid Voltage combined content from S4 alongside S3a Legendary Heartbeat to form a single EN release.
For import buyers, this is the key fact: not all Amazing Rares in Vivid Voltage come from S4 boxes. The Lightning-type Amazing Rares (Pikachu and Zapdos) come specifically from S4 Amazing Volt Tackle packs. The others come from S3a.

What's different in the box
Japanese and English booster configurations differ in more than just language. JP S4 comes in 30-pack boxes with a set number in the 100s for secret rares. EN booster boxes have 36 packs and extend the numbering to 185 for the main set.
| Product | JP Amazing Volt Tackle | EN Vivid Voltage |
|---|---|---|
| Booster box packs | 30 | 36 |
| Cards per pack | 5 | 10 |
| Elite Trainer Box | No JP equivalent | 8 packs, Gigantamax Pikachu sleeves |
| Build & Battle Box | No JP equivalent | 4 packs + 23-card deck frame |
| Language | Japanese only | English (English-language markets) |
| Tournament legal | No (in EN events) | Yes (until format rotation) |
The JP ETB does not exist for this set. S4 booster boxes are the primary JP product. If you want the ETB format with the Gigantamax Pikachu sleeves, that is an EN-only product.
Amazing Rares: which came from which JP set
The most misunderstood thing about Vivid Voltage is the Amazing Rare split. Vivid Voltage was the first EN set to introduce Amazing Rares. But the seven Amazing Rares did not all come from S4.
S3a Legendary Heartbeat (Jul 10, 2020) introduced the mechanic. S4 continued it with two more Lightning-type Amazing Rares. Both were combined into EN Vivid Voltage.
See our Legendary Heartbeat guide for the full S3a mapping.
| Amazing Rare card | Type | JP source set | EN Vivid Voltage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Celebi AR | Grass | S3a Legendary Heartbeat | 017/185 |
| Mew AR | Psychic | S3a Legendary Heartbeat | 069/185 |
| Raikou AR | Lightning | S3a Legendary Heartbeat | 049/185 |
| Jirachi AR | Steel | S3a Legendary Heartbeat | 119/185 |
| Rayquaza AR | Colorless | S3a Legendary Heartbeat | 110/185 |
| Pikachu AR | Lightning | S4 Amazing Volt Tackle | 043/185 |
| Zapdos AR | Lightning | S4 Amazing Volt Tackle | 068/185 |
Card numbers sourced from Limitless TCG. Crosswalk verified against EN Vivid Voltage set list.
If you are buying JP boxes specifically for Amazing Rares, the type tells you which set to target. Lightning-type Amazing Rares (Pikachu AR, Zapdos AR) only appear in S4 boxes. The other five require S3a Legendary Heartbeat boxes.
Japanese or English: which to buy?
The right answer depends on why you want the set. Both versions cover the same Pikachu VMAX and Amazing Rare pool, but each suits a different collector.
Price per pack
JP S4 boxes (30 packs) run at 165 yen MSRP per pack on the official Japanese site. Importing adds shipping and often duties.
EN booster boxes (36 packs, $3.99 MSRP per pack) are widely available from independent shops. Single EN packs start from under $12 USD from loose-pack sellers. If you want to open packs at low cost, EN singles are the more accessible path from Western shops.
Tournament legality
JP S4 cards are not legal in English-language Pokémon TCG events, including Play! Pokémon tournaments and League challenges. EN Vivid Voltage cards were legal during the Sword and Shield era and follow standard rotation rules.
If you plan to play competitively in any EN-language market, buy the EN version.
Language and grading
JP cards are printed in Japanese only. PSA grades both JP and EN cards with the same scale; CGC notes the language in their label.
JP Pikachu VMAX secret rares can command different market demand from EN 188/185 copies. Confirm the version before purchasing a graded slab. For display collectors who prefer Japanese text, S4 is the correct version to seek out.
Authentic product tips
JP S4 boxes have an official holographic seal from The Pokémon Company International Japan. EN boxes carry the English copyright text and the SWSH04 set symbol.
When buying sealed Vivid Voltage, check the seal for signs of resealing, particularly on blister packs and sleeved singles. See our guide to spotting fake Pokémon products for a broader authentication checklist.
