Bandit Ring (XY7, 2015): Japanese Pokémon TCG and Its English Equivalent Ancient Origins
By Dexhaul Team · October 19, 2026 · 6 min read
Japanese Pokémon TCG set Bandit Ring (XY7), released June 20, 2015, is the primary source set for the English Ancient Origins expansion released August 12, 2015. The 53-day gap between the two is one of the tighter JP-to-EN windows of the entire XY era.
Bandit Ring introduced Hoopa EX, whose Scoundrel Ring attack became the definitive setup tool for 2015 competitive play. Ancient Origins kept all the major Bandit Ring pulls and added five extra cards not printed in the original Japanese release.
Both sets are out of print, but sealed product and singles circulate across independent shops. If you are hunting Mega Ampharos EX or the full Ancient Trait card cycle, knowing which set introduced which card matters. Our complete Japanese-English set hub covers every major era if you want the broader picture first.

Set mapping at a glance
| Japanese set | Code | JP release | English set | EN release | JP cards | EN cards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bandit Ring | XY7 | Jun 20, 2015 | Ancient Origins | Aug 12, 2015 | 95 | 100 (98 + 2 SR) |
Set code note: Limitless TCG catalogs Bandit Ring as XY7. Some older databases label it XY8 because they count the dual-set Tidal Storm / Gaia Volcano release as two separate numbered sets; both codes refer to the same product. The EN release date and card count are confirmed on the official Ancient Origins product page.
What is different between the Japanese and English versions?
| Feature | Bandit Ring (JP) | Ancient Origins (EN) |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | June 20, 2015 | August 12, 2015 |
| Total cards | 95 | 100 (98 normal + 2 secret rare) |
| Cards added in EN | n/a | 5 trainer and energy cards unique to the EN print run |
| Pack size | 5 cards | 10 cards |
| Booster box | 30 packs | 36 packs |
| Ancient Trait symbol | Theta (Θ) / Phi (Φ) printed in Japanese | Same symbols with English text |
| Language | Japanese only | English only |
The five EN-only cards are trainer and energy additions that The Pokémon Company printed specifically for Western markets. They do not appear in any Japanese Bandit Ring pack. Collectors who want a complete Ancient Origins set in English need those five cards; Japanese Bandit Ring collectors work from the 95-card JP checklist instead.

Why Hoopa EX was the set's breakout card
Hoopa EX's Scoundrel Ring attack was the first card in the Pokémon TCG history to let a player search three EX simultaneously from their deck to hand in a single action. Before Bandit Ring, setting up a Primal Groudon EX or Primal Kyogre EX required multiple turns of searching and drawing. Hoopa EX collapsed that to a single attack cost.
The result was an immediate format shift. Decks built around Primal Groudon EX with Hoopa EX support dominated the 2015 World Championships format. Giratina EX from the same set added another dimension: its Chaos Wheel attack blocked opponents from playing Stadiums or Special Energy for a turn, which shut down the Primal decks' own infrastructure if used against them.
This is the unique dynamic of the Bandit Ring set: it both created the dominant deck archetype and included the best counter to that archetype in the same 95-card release.
Japanese or English: which to buy?
Price per pack
Japanese Bandit Ring packs contain 5 cards each, while English Ancient Origins packs contain 10. A Japanese booster box of 30 packs gives you 150 cards; an English box of 36 packs gives 360. On a per-card basis, Japanese singles are generally more affordable than English equivalents from this era, particularly for non-Full-Art EX cards.
Play legality
Neither set is currently legal in Standard play (both rotated years ago). In Expanded play, the cards are the same regardless of language; the Pokémon Company rules permit Japanese-language cards in sanctioned Expanded events. Verify the specific tournament rules with your organizer before playing Japanese copies.
Language and readability
Japanese Bandit Ring singles are ideal for display collectors who want authentic Japanese artwork, but they require knowing the card's move effects independently since the text is in Japanese. For players who need to read the card quickly, English Ancient Origins is the practical choice.
Grading considerations
PSA and CGC both grade Japanese Bandit Ring cards under their standard submission process. Japanese cards from this era tend to have slightly thicker card stock than their EN counterparts, which can affect handling when submitting. If you plan to grade, check the card for authenticity markers before submitting: XY-era counterfeits exist, particularly for Hoopa EX and Full Art variants.
Ancient Traits: the mechanic unique to this set family
Bandit Ring and Ancient Origins introduced the Ancient Trait mechanic, printed with Greek letter symbols on the card: Θ Stop (theta stop) prevents damage from EX Pokémon, Θ Max doubles damage when an opponent's EX is Knocked Out, and Φ Ban prevents the affected Pokémon from being affected by Special Conditions. These appeared on non-EX cards and gave them a competitive edge against the EX-heavy meta of 2015.
Ancient Traits exist only on cards from the Japanese sets Primal Clash, Roaring Skies, and Bandit Ring (and their EN counterparts). No set released after XY7 continued the mechanic, which makes Bandit Ring the last JP set to carry Ancient Trait cards.
For collectors building a complete Ancient Trait set, the XY Best-of collection reprinted select highlights from across the XY era for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Japanese equivalent of Ancient Origins?
The Japanese source set for Ancient Origins is Bandit Ring (code XY7 on Limitless TCG), released June 20, 2015. It contains 95 cards; Ancient Origins added 5 cards specific to the English print.
Is Bandit Ring coded XY7 or XY8?
Limitless TCG and most current card databases catalog Bandit Ring as XY7. Some older sources used XY8 because they counted an earlier dual-set release as two entries instead of one; both codes refer to the same Bandit Ring set.
How many cards are in Bandit Ring versus Ancient Origins?
Bandit Ring has 95 cards; Ancient Origins has 98 normal cards plus 2 secret rares for 100 total. The 5-card difference accounts for trainer and energy cards added for the Western release.
Can I use Japanese Bandit Ring cards in official Expanded play?
Generally yes: the Pokémon Company permits Japanese-language cards in sanctioned Expanded events, provided the card has an identical English-language equivalent. Check your specific tournament's rules before playing, as local organizers may have additional requirements.
What was the most impactful card from Bandit Ring and Ancient Origins?
Hoopa EX, with its Scoundrel Ring attack that searched three EX cards simultaneously from the deck, was the defining card of the set. It enabled Primal Groudon EX and Primal Kyogre EX decks that dominated the 2015 competitive season.
