Rising Fist (XY3, 2014): Japanese Pokémon TCG and Its English Equivalent Furious Fists
By Dexhaul Team · October 19, 2026 · 7 min read
Japanese Pokémon TCG set Rising Fist (XY3), released June 14, 2014, is the primary source set for the English Furious Fists expansion that followed on August 13, 2014. The 60-day window is typical of the XY era's Japanese-to-English translation pipeline.
Rising Fist is the set that introduced Mega Evolution to Fighting-type Pokémon in the TCG, most notably Mega Lucario EX and Mega Heracross EX. Seismitoad EX also debuted here, a card that went on to dominate competitive play in 2014 and 2015 thanks to its Quaking Punch attack.
Both the Japanese and English versions are long out of print, but sealed product and singles from independent sellers remain available. If you want the JP original print or the EN collector version, knowing how the two sets map to each other narrows your hunt considerably. Our complete Japanese-English set hub covers every major era if you want the broader reference first.

Set mapping at a glance
| Japanese set | Code | JP release | English set | EN release | JP cards | EN cards |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rising Fist | XY3 | Jun 14, 2014 | Furious Fists | Aug 13, 2014 | 96 + 8 SR/UR | 111 + 2 SR |
Set code note: Limitless TCG catalogs this set as XY3 with 103 cards total (96 regular plus secret rares through 104/096). Some older databases and the topic queue for this site carried the incorrect code XY2; that code belongs to Wild Blaze, the Japanese predecessor to Flashfire. Rising Fist is XY3, confirmed on Limitless. The English Furious Fists release date is confirmed on the official Pokémon TCG product page.
What is different between the Japanese and English versions?
| Feature | Rising Fist (JP) | Furious Fists (EN) |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | June 14, 2014 | August 13, 2014 |
| Base set cards | 96 | 111 |
| Secret rares | 8 (097–104/096) | 2 (112–113/111) |
| Total cards | 104 | 113 |
| Cards added in EN | n/a | ~15 trainer and energy cards unique to the EN print run |
| Pack size | 5 cards | 10 cards |
| Booster box | 30 packs | 36 packs |
| Gold ultra rare cards | Yes (M Heracross EX UR 104/096) | Gold M Lucario EX 113/111 and Gold M Heracross EX 112/111 |
| Language | Japanese only | English only |
The EN set expanded the base set count from 96 to 111 by adding trainer and supporter cards not included in the Japanese release. This is the standard XY-era practice: The Pokémon Company printed trainer cards exclusive to the English product to meet the 100+ card threshold expected for Western booster boxes.
One meaningful difference: the JP secret rare count is higher. Rising Fist has eight secret rares including Supporter card SRs for Korrina (102/096) and Battle Reporter (103/096), plus a Gold Ultra Rare M Heracross EX (104/096). The English Furious Fists condensed the secret rare slot to just two Gold Ultra Rares (M Heracross EX 112/111 and M Lucario EX 113/111), dropping the Supporter SRs entirely from the EN print run. Collectors who want the Korrina SR specifically need the Japanese version.
Top cards and their JP card numbers
Every EX card below appears in both Rising Fist and Furious Fists. JP numbers are confirmed via Limitless TCG.
| Card | JP number (Rising Fist) | EN number (Furious Fists) | Rarity | Key attribute |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heracross EX | 004/096 | 4/111 | RR (Double Rare) | Grass/Fighting; Mega Evolution target |
| M Heracross EX | 005/096 | 5/111 | RR (Double Rare) | 230 HP; Pin Missile attack |
| Seismitoad EX | 020/096 | 20/111 | RR (Double Rare) | Quaking Punch; 2014–15 meta staple |
| Lucario EX | 052/096 | 54/111 | RR (Double Rare) | Fighting; Mega Evolution target |
| Dragonite EX | 069/096 | 74/111 | RR (Double Rare) | Colorless; Dragon Vortex attack |
| Heracross EX (Full Art) | 097/096 | 105/111 | SR (Secret Rare) | Full Art variant |
| Seismitoad EX (Full Art) | 098/096 | 106/111 | SR (Secret Rare) | Full Art variant |
| Dragonite EX (Full Art) | 100/096 | 110/111 | SR (Secret Rare) | Full Art variant |
| M Heracross EX (Gold UR) | 104/096 | 112/111 | UR / Gold SR | Gold card; JP-only Gold UR frame |
The card numbers align very closely between JP and EN at the lower rarities. The divergence appears in the trainer section where EN added cards between 96 and 111, shifting some Pokémon numbers slightly upward in the EN count.
Why Rising Fist matters as a collector set
Rising Fist holds a specific place in XY-era collecting for three reasons most product pages skip over.
First, it is the Mega Evolution debut for Fighting-type Pokémon. Serebii's Furious Fists set index confirms that Lucario EX and Mega Lucario EX were designed as the face cards of the set, with a dedicated booster pack art featuring Lucario in its Mega form. The set shipped with four booster pack art variants in English, each highlighting a different Pokémon from the set.
Second, Seismitoad EX from this set became one of the most influential competitive cards of the 2014–2015 season. Its Quaking Punch attack prevented opponents from using item cards for the turn, locking down the opponent's ability to set up. A Seismitoad EX lock deck won multiple regional championships before the card rotated out of Standard. The JP Rising Fist print (020/096) is the original card that enabled that format.
Third, the Japanese secret rare lineup is unusually rich for the era. The eight secret rares include two Supporter SRs (Korrina and Battle Reporter) that were not printed as secret rares in the English set at all. The Korrina SR (102/096) in particular is a low-supply JP-exclusive pull that fills a set-completion gap no English Furious Fists binder can address.
JP vs EN: which version should you buy?
| Goal | Better choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Complete set including Supporter SRs | Rising Fist (JP) | Korrina SR and Battle Reporter SR are JP-exclusive pulls |
| Competitive singles (Seismitoad EX, Lucario EX) | Either | Same card mechanically; JP prints often carry a small premium for condition |
| Full Art collection (EX Full Arts) | Furious Fists (EN) | EN Full Arts numbered above 111 are the target; JP SR equivalents have different art framing |
| Gold ultra rares | JP for M Heracross; EN for both M Lucario and M Heracross | M Lucario EX Gold is EN-only; M Heracross EX Gold exists in both languages |
| Sealed booster pack | JP for authenticity; EN for pack-per-dollar value | JP 5-card sealed packs are the original print; EN 10-card packs give more pulls per pack opened |

Frequently asked questions
Is Rising Fist the same as Wild Blaze?
No. Wild Blaze is Japanese set XY2, released March 15, 2014, and its English equivalent is Flashfire. Rising Fist is XY3, released June 14, 2014, with English equivalent Furious Fists. Some older databases and forum posts incorrectly list Rising Fist as XY2. Limitless TCG is the authoritative source for Japanese set codes.
Does Rising Fist contain Hawlucha EX?
Hawlucha EX (63/111 in Furious Fists) is confirmed in the English set. In Rising Fist, Hawlucha appears as a regular Holo Rare (060/096). The EX version in English corresponds to a different print tier; the JP base does include Hawlucha but the EX treatment may have been added for the EN release. The Hawlucha Holo from Rising Fist (060/096) is available from Japan2UK among other sellers.
What sets came before and after Rising Fist in Japanese?
Rising Fist (XY3) follows Wild Blaze (XY2, March 2014) and precedes Phantom Gate (XY4, September 2014). The English equivalents are Flashfire (XY2), Furious Fists (XY3), and Phantom Forces (XY4). See the full Japanese-English set reference for the complete XY era timeline.
Is the Japanese Seismitoad EX the same card as the English version?
Mechanically identical. Quaking Punch costs two Colorless energy and does 30 damage in both prints. The art, HP (170), and attack text are the same. The only difference is the language of the card text and the numbering (020/096 JP vs 20/111 EN).
