Wild Blaze (XY2): English Equivalent Flashfire (2014)
By Dexhaul Team · October 19, 2026 · 6 min read
Japanese Wild Blaze (XY2) released February 28, 2014 and became the source for English XY Flashfire on May 7, 2014.
Both carry the XY2 set code on the card itself, a direct match rare enough in the XY era to matter for graders and PC builders. This code alignment is the exception: later sets like Bandit Ring (JP XY7) and Ancient Origins (EN XY8) diverge by one.
Flashfire is the larger set at 106 cards, compared to Wild Blaze's 80 base cards. The extra 26 English slots come from JP promos and supplemental releases not in Wild Blaze's original Japanese print run.
Set at a Glance
The table below covers the key release and card-count data from Limitless TCG (JP XY2) and the official Pokémon product page for XY Flashfire.
| Detail | Japanese: Wild Blaze | English: XY Flashfire |
|---|---|---|
| Set code (on card) | XY2 | XY2 (FLF) |
| Release date | February 28, 2014 | May 7, 2014 |
| Base set size | 80 cards | 106 cards |
| Secret rares | 9 (numbered above 80/080) | 2 (106/106 is the last numbered card) |
| Key chase cards | M Charizard EX (both forms), Lysandre SR | M Charizard EX (X & Y), Charizard EX Full Art (100/106) |
| Set gap to EN | N/A | 68 days |
The XY2 code alignment is not common across the full XY era. Later sets diverge: Japanese Bandit Ring carries the XY7 code on the card, while its English counterpart Ancient Origins is XY8. Wild Blaze and Flashfire share the same code because the English set numbering started from the XY base set at the same point as the Japanese XY1 pair.

What Is Different in the Box
| Feature | JP Wild Blaze | EN Flashfire |
|---|---|---|
| Cards per booster pack | 5 cards | 10 cards |
| M Charizard EX variants | 2 (one base RR, one SR Full Art per form) | 2 (69/106 and 101/106 for both Mega forms) |
| Charizard EX regular | 1 version (RR) | 2 versions (11/106 and 12/106, different art) |
| Lysandre trainer | SR Full Art (085/080) | Regular rare (90/106) only, no FA in base set |
| Language | Japanese text; card name in Japanese | English text; card name in English |
| EN-exclusive cards | Not applicable | ~26 cards absent from JP Wild Blaze |
The Lysandre difference is a practical collector detail. Japanese Wild Blaze's Lysandre is a secret-rare Full Art (085/080), numbering above the set maximum and carrying the full-art treatment.
In English Flashfire, Lysandre appears only as a standard rare at 90/106 with no Full Art in the main set. Collectors targeting the Lysandre FA must go to the Japanese version.
Top Cards: JP to EN Card Number Crosswalk
| Card name | JP Wild Blaze (XY2) | EN Flashfire (XY2) | Rarity tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Charizard EX | 014/080 (RR) | 11/106 and 12/106 | Ultra Rare |
| Charizard EX Full Art | 085/080 (SR) | 100/106 | Secret Rare / Ultra Rare FA |
| M Charizard EX (Y form) | 015/080 (RR) | 13/106 | Ultra Rare |
| M Charizard EX (X form) | 016/080 (RR) | 69/106 | Ultra Rare |
| M Charizard EX Full Art | 086/080 (SR) | 101/106 | Secret Rare / Ultra Rare FA |
| Pyroar | 015/080 (H) | 20/106 | Rare Holo |
| Lysandre | 085/080 (SR Full Art) | 90/106 (Rare only) | SR in JP; Rare in EN |
Card number gaps between JP and EN are expected. The EN set absorbed more than 25 additional cards from Japanese supplemental products released alongside Wild Blaze, so EN card numbers are not a direct +1 of their JP equivalents.
Japanese or English A Practical Guide
Price per pack
JP Wild Blaze single packs are a collector-grade import, observed at £169.99 GBP per single pack as of October 2026. EN Flashfire sleeved packs appear in the $170–$250 USD range from independent sellers.
Neither format is budget sealed product: both are sealed vintage at this point. JP is typically a smaller physical investment if you want one pack, because the pack contains 5 cards rather than 10.
Play legality
For official Pokémon TCG tournament formats, both JP and EN prints of the same card are tournament-legal with identical rulings. Translated card text takes precedence over card-face text in sanctioned play. Check the current Pokémon TCG tournament rules for the language policy of a specific event, as local organiser rules may vary.
Language and card text
Japanese Wild Blaze cards have Japanese text. Pyroar's card name is printed in katakana, and attack names follow Japanese conventions.
The foil treatment and card stock are distinct from the English equivalent. Japanese XY-era cards use a lighter stock and a different holo pattern, so displayed side-by-side in a binder they read as clearly different printings.
Grading value
PSA and BGS grade both languages. Japanese Wild Blaze M Charizard EX SR cards have attracted grading interest because the secret-rare Full Art exists only in the Japanese set, not in English Flashfire.
If your goal is a graded Lysandre or M Charizard EX Full Art, the JP version is the only route. For English Full Art Charizard EX (100/106), the EN version is the grading target. The Serebii Wild Blaze set page has the full Japanese card list to cross-reference before submitting to a grading service.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Japanese name for XY Flashfire?
The Japanese equivalent is Wild Blaze (XY2), released February 28, 2014, about ten weeks before English Flashfire on May 7, 2014. Both carry the XY2 set code on the card itself.
Does Wild Blaze XY2 have the same cards as Flashfire?
Most EX-era chase cards appear in both, but English Flashfire contains roughly 26 cards not found in Japanese Wild Blaze. The Japanese set runs to 80 base cards; English Flashfire runs to 106. A full-set completion run in English is a larger project.
Is the Lysandre Full Art only in the Japanese set?
Yes. Lysandre's Full Art (secret rare 085/080) exists only in Japanese Wild Blaze. The English Flashfire set includes Lysandre only as a standard rare at 90/106, with no Full Art equivalent in the main print run.
How many M Charizard EX cards are in Flashfire?
English Flashfire has two M Charizard EX cards: the Charizard Y form at 13/106 and the Charizard X form at 69/106, plus their respective Full Arts at 101/106 and (depending on the variant) within the standard ultra-rare tier. Japanese Wild Blaze also features both Mega Charizard forms.
Is Wild Blaze XY2 the same set as XY Flashfire for tournament purposes?
Cards from both prints are legal in the same format, provided the set was legal at the time of play and the Pokémon TCG's current tournament rules permit foreign-language cards, which they generally do. Verify with your specific event organiser.
