Paradox Rift vs Temporal Forces ETB: Which to Buy (2026)

Buy Paradox Rift if you want the original Paradox era lineup: Roaring Moon ex and Iron Valiant ex are the headline ETB designs, and the 182-card set is the widest single-box pool in the SV04–SV05 window. Buy Temporal Forces if you are building a competitive deck or want the set that brought ACE SPEC cards back to the game after more than a decade away.

Both ETBs contain nine booster packs, 65 card sleeves, dice, damage counters, and accessories. The price and contents are essentially identical at MSRP. What you are really choosing is the card pool inside those packs, and that difference is significant.

Paradox Rift: the set that launched the Paradox era

Paradox Rift (SV04) was the first Pokémon TCG set built entirely around Ancient and Future Paradox Pokémon. According to Serebii's Paradox Rift card list, the set runs to 182 standard-numbered cards, making it one of the largest individual SV-era main-series sets. It released on November 3, 2023, according to the official Pokémon product page.

Ancient and Future Pokémon in one set

The set splits cleanly between two timelines. Ancient Pokémon include Roaring Moon ex, Great Tusk ex, Flutter Mane ex, and Scream Tail ex. Future Pokémon include Iron Valiant ex, Iron Treads ex, Iron Moth ex, and Iron Jugulis ex. This split maps directly to the two ETB variants: Roaring Moon ex covers the Ancient side, Iron Valiant ex covers the Future side.

The wider card pool cuts both ways

At 182 standard cards, Paradox Rift is a deeper set than Temporal Forces. More variety per pack is appealing when opening, but it also means each specific pull is spread across a larger pool. Completing the numbered set to 182 typically takes more boxes and more singles buying than completing Temporal Forces to its 162-card checklist.

Temporal Forces: the ACE SPEC era begins

Temporal Forces (SV05) extended the Paradox lineup with a second generation of paradox legendaries: Walking Wake ex and Raging Bolt ex on the Ancient side, Iron Leaves ex and Iron Crown ex on the Future side. Its 162 standard cards make it a slightly smaller set than Paradox Rift, confirmed via Serebii's Temporal Forces card list.

ACE SPEC cards return after twelve years

This is the detail that does not appear on the product box. Temporal Forces reintroduced ACE SPEC cards to the competitive game: these are uniquely powerful Trainer cards limited to one copy per deck. The six ACE SPEC cards in the set include Prime Catcher, Hero's Cape, Legacy Energy, Technical Machine: Devolution, Counter Catcher, and Sparkling Crystal. ACE SPEC cards had last appeared in the Black and White era (2012–2013). Their return makes Temporal Forces booster pulls relevant to active tournament players, not just collectors.

A shorter checklist means faster set completion

At 162 cards, Temporal Forces is easier to complete than Paradox Rift. A collector buying two ETBs plus a booster bundle will typically cover the bulk of the standard set, with a smaller singles run needed at the end. For gift buyers who want a set their recipient can actually finish, this is worth factoring in.

Where Paradox Rift wins

Paradox Rift is the stronger pick when the Roaring Moon or Iron Valiant designs are the goal, or when you want the deepest single-box exposure to the original Paradox era. No other set has these exact cards, so if a specific SIR from SV04 is the target, only Paradox Rift packs can produce it.

The two ETB art variants also represent clean collector logic: buy one of each to own both sides of the Paradox divide. Our guide to ETB vs other competitive products covers how the ETB's sleeve count and accessories compare to battle decks for players building a collection from scratch.

Where Temporal Forces wins

Temporal Forces wins for anyone building or improving a competitive deck. ACE SPEC cards are pulled from the same booster packs as the rest of the set, which means every ETB you open has a meaningful chance of producing a competitive-format card you can immediately slot into a deck. No SV04 product offers that.

It also wins on completion efficiency. The 162-card pool is genuinely smaller, and secondary market ETB prices observed in October 2026 run slightly lower on average than Paradox Rift. For a gift purchase where the recipient does not have a specific target card, Temporal Forces gives a cleaner path from box to completed set. See how it fits into a broader ETB buying strategy in the Temporal Forces ETB contents guide.

The deciding question

Ask what you are actually opening the box to get.

Chasing a specific SIR

Roaring Moon ex SIR and Iron Valiant ex SIR are exclusive to Paradox Rift. Walking Wake ex SIR and Raging Bolt ex SIR are exclusive to Temporal Forces. If you know which card you want, buy the set that contains it. Opening packs from the wrong set cannot produce your target.

Building a competitive deck

Temporal Forces is the clear answer. ACE SPEC cards from this set see regular play in Standard-format decks, so any TF ETB you open has practical deck-building value beyond the collector appeal. Paradox Rift ex cards are also playable, but the set has no mechanic hook with the same ongoing tournament relevance as ACE SPECs.

Buying as a gift

Both sets are appropriate gifts for a Pokémon TCG fan. Temporal Forces runs slightly cheaper at current storefront prices observed in October 2026. Paradox Rift has the stronger art designs on the two ETB boxes if the visual appeal of the packaging matters. For a gift buyer who is unsure, Temporal Forces is the safer pick: it covers a smaller card set and is easier to complete.

The Pokemon Center ETB option

Both sets have Pokémon Center ETB variants with the same nine packs and a premium box design. Paradox Rift Pokemon Center ETBs come in Iron Valiant and Roaring Moon versions; Temporal Forces has Walking Wake and Iron Leaves. Pokemon Center ETBs carry a higher secondary market price but are the same nine packs inside. They are worth the premium for the box art, not for any extra packs.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are in the Paradox Rift set?

What are ACE SPEC cards and why are they in Temporal Forces?

ACE SPEC cards are uniquely powerful Trainer cards limited to one copy per deck. Temporal Forces reintroduced them to Standard play in March 2024, the first appearance of the mechanic since the Black and White era in 2012–2013. The set includes six ACE SPEC cards: Prime Catcher, Hero's Cape, Legacy Energy, Technical Machine: Devolution, Counter Catcher, and Sparkling Crystal.

Are Paradox Rift and Temporal Forces ETBs the same contents?

Which ETB is cheaper right now?
