Pokémon 30th Celebration Japanese Starter Card Sets: Johto and Hoenn's Import-Only Tier

The English 30th Celebration set launched September 16 and brought Kanto starter promos to English retail shelves. Johto and Hoenn starters got a Japanese import instead.

That split is intentional. The Japanese 30th Celebration card set program produces standalone M-P promotional boxes for each regional starter trio, sold through Japanese retail and shipped internationally by import sellers.

The Johto set (Chikorita, Cyndaquil, Totodile) and the Hoenn set (Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip) are both available right now, priced between $59 and $104 depending on the seller. These are the only way to own 30th Anniversary promo versions of these six starters in the current collector era.

No English-retail equivalent exists for either set.

What the Japanese 30th Celebration Card Sets Include

Each regional set is a boxed Japanese product. Inside is a matched trio of promo cards, one per starter, featuring anniversary artwork in the 30th Celebration design language. The cards carry Japanese M-P series numbering, which places them outside the standard set numbering used by English TCG releases.

The Johto set's M-P designation ties it to Japan's broader 30th Anniversary promotional program running alongside the English 30th Celebration product line. It is not a variant of any English card. Collectors searching for a Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile card in the 2026 anniversary art style will not find a substitute on English shelves.

The same pattern holds for Hoenn. The English 30th Celebration print run contained no Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip promo cards. The Japanese M-P set is the sole source for 30th Anniversary art featuring Hoenn's starting trio.

The Johto Set: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile

Johto's starters have collected a devoted following since Gold and Silver introduced them in 1999 in Japan. Chikorita's Grass typing made it a harder path through the Johto gyms, which is partly why it retains a dedicated collector base today.

Cyndaquil's popularity has only grown in the modern era. Totodile's expressions and design are among the franchise's most referenced.

None of them appear in the English 30th Celebration booster set or any English 30th Celebration bundled product at retail. The Japanese M-P set delivers all three in one box.

The Johto set is available from four import sellers right now: PokeNinJapan at $59, Allium Wholesale at $65, Fandom Tokyo at $89, and Cardverse at $104.

The spread from floor to ceiling is 76%.

The Hoenn Set: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip

Hoenn's starters carry a heavier collector legacy in the TCG than their individual card counts suggest. Blaziken, Sceptile, and Swampert each received Mega Evolution forms that remain among the most collected in the ex-era Mega Evolution sets. The 30th Celebration promo versions of their first-stage forms are the Grass-Fire-Water entry point to a collector line with a decade of Mega material above it.

The Hoenn set trades from $62 (PokeNinJapan) through $65 (Allium Wholesale) to $104 (Cardverse). Its price floor sits $3 above the Johto floor.

Why the Same Product Costs $59 or $104 Depending on the Seller

Import math, not product difference. All four sellers stock the same Japanese M-P promo box. The yen price is the same at the source.

What shifts from seller to seller is their own cost structure: shipping rates from Japan, fulfillment overhead, local storage, and margin target.

PokeNinJapan's $59 reflects a lean import pipeline. Cardverse's $104 reflects a higher-overhead operation. You are choosing a channel, not a product variant.

That makes the $65 tier (Allium Wholesale) the most defensible middle choice: $6 above the floor, $39 below the ceiling, with reliable import infrastructure behind it.

How the Kanto Set Prices Compare

The Kanto set (Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle) is the same product format. Same M-P structure, same Japanese retail source, same import channels. Its price range is $65 to $150.

The Fandom Tokyo Kanto listing sits at $150. Their Johto listing is $89. That is a 69% premium on identical product structure, explained entirely by Gen 1 collector demand.

The gap is not a quality difference or a rarity difference. It is the Hoenn and Johto starters trading at a persistent discount to Kanto because secondary demand for the Kanto trio runs higher across every product category.

For collectors who want all four regional sets, the Johto and Hoenn sets together cost $118 to $208 (at PokeNinJapan floor pricing) versus $65 to $150 for Kanto alone. The full four-region run at the floor is $240.

The MonColle Figure Sets as a Physical Companion

Not every collector prioritizes cards. The 30th Anniversary MonColle figure sets deliver the same regional starter trios as three matched figures, scaled at approximately 3-4 cm each in the standard MonColle format.

The Hoenn MonColle set is at $21 from Toys Store Japan. That positions the figure tier at roughly a third the price of the card set floor.

Both products are Japanese 30th Anniversary items. Both are import-only. They serve different collector priorities without overlapping.

Collectors building a 30th Anniversary display have a natural two-tier structure here: the M-P card sets for the promo prints, the MonColle figures for a matching physical presence. The card sets and figure sets are separate products with no bundle path between them, so each requires a separate import order.

Which Set to Start With

If you collect one region's starters, start there. The sets are independent and there is no cross-set benefit to buying in a specific order.

If you are undecided, the Johto floor price of $59 is the lowest entry point across all four regional sets. Hoenn at $62 is three dollars more for the floor listing.

Kanto runs from $65 at the floor and Sinnoh from $62. Johto and Hoenn sit in the same accessible tier, below Kanto and roughly equal to Sinnoh.

Both the Johto and Hoenn sets are currently listed as pre-orders at some sellers and in-stock at others. Check the specific listing before purchasing; shipping timelines vary by seller and sourcing status.
