The 30th Celebration set lands September 16, and the product list is impressive. ETB, two UPC variants, Booster Bundle, Knock Out Collection, ex Boxes, Poster Collection, a JP import booster box. What none of that tells you is the underlying structure: this set is built to serve two completely different collector instincts at the same time. Buying for the wrong one costs you money.
Here is what you actually get from the Kanto angle, and how each format fits depending on what you are after.
The Template This Set Follows
The 2021 25th Anniversary Celebrations set established the modern anniversary TCG formula. It reprinted iconic cards from Base Set through the Burning Shadows era as a "Classic Collection" insert subset alongside new-era ex cards. Those classic reprints (Charizard, Blastoise, Mewtwo EX) remain some of the most sought-after anniversary singles in the hobby.
The 30th Celebration follows the same architecture. Kanto-era characters appear throughout the set, and the Futuristic Rare slot delivers the updated-art treatment that has become the signature aesthetic of this anniversary line. The set pairs classic character recognition with modern ex-era card mechanics. Neither element is decorative. Both are functional chase targets.
The practical implication: you can buy 30th Celebration products for the Kanto nostalgia, for the ex pulls, or for both. Each goal maps to a different format.
The Day/Night UPC Split: A New Collector Variable
The most important structural difference between the 30th Celebration and every prior Pokémon anniversary set is this: the Ultra Premium Collection comes in two versions.
The Night UPC, priced at $489.95, features Pikachu ex and Umbreon ex as its headline promo cards. The Day UPC, at $449.95, carries its own configuration. These are not colorway variants of the same box. They contain different promo cards, making them distinct collector targets.
Prior anniversary sets gave collectors one UPC to decide on. The 25th Anniversary had one box; you bought it or you did not. The 30th Celebration sets up a decision between two parallel premium products. A collector who wants both UPC promos is looking at a combined $939.90 entry at the UPC level alone, before any other format.
This is worth knowing before you commit. It is not a problem to solve. It is just the structure of this set.
The Entry Points for Kanto Nostalgia Buyers
If your primary interest is the Kanto character appeal rather than the premium promo cards, the Knock Out Collection is the most direct entry point. It includes a promo card and booster packs at $23.65 to $29.99 USD depending on the seller. Available September 16. No large commitment required.
Pokemon: 30th Celebration Knockout Collection (Expected Release Date 09-16-2026)

The Elite Trainer Box at $149.99 is where most collectors land. Nine packs is enough volume to hit the Futuristic Rare slot consistently and gives you a legitimate range of the set's character distribution. It is the format that balances chase access with spend. If you want one September 16 purchase that covers the Kanto nostalgia angle with reasonable depth, this is it.
The Poster Collection (around $44.99 USD, Wave 1) is a low-cost alternative if you specifically want a large-format Kanto art piece alongside your packs. Note that a Wave 2 Poster Collection arrives in late October, so if you miss Wave 1, there is a secondary opportunity, though whether the promo cards differ between waves has not been officially confirmed at this writing.
The ex Box Route: Character-Specific, Not Kanto-Centric
The Greninja ex Box and Sylveon ex Box each include four booster packs plus a promo ex card.
Be clear about what these are. Greninja is a Kalos starter. Sylveon is a Gen 6 Eeveelution. These boxes are not primarily a Kanto nostalgia purchase: they are character-focused ex card entries from the modern era. Individual boxes from Cash Cards Unlimited run $59.99; the set of both from MHDEALSPLUS is $139.95. If you collect either of those characters specifically, or you want the accompanying packs without the ETB price, these are the right format. If you are primarily after Kanto characters, the ex Boxes are not where to start.
Pack Math: The Booster Bundle Case
The Booster Bundle is the sleeper format of this set. Six packs, arriving October 2 rather than September 16, priced at $70 to $80 USD depending on the seller.
At $13.33 per pack, that is competitive with the ETB pack rate. You do not get accessories or a promo card. You get packs at a lower-friction entry. The practical move for most collectors: order the Knock Out Collection or ex Box for September 16 and pre-order the Booster Bundle separately for October. That sequence gives you a launch-day opening without waiting, plus six additional packs at a reasonable price before October stock sells through.
The Japanese Option
The M6A booster box is the import path. Japan's Mega Evolution expansion series, tracked on Bulbapedia's Japanese TCG sets list, runs its own release calendar ahead of English prints. Fandom Tokyo lists M6A at $337 USD; PokeNinJapan at $353 USD. The Japanese format has a different card distribution and art treatment from the English release.
The JP box appeals to collectors building mixed EN/JP sets or those who specifically want the Japanese art versions of 30th Celebration pulls. It is not a substitution for the English ETB or UPC. The products serve different collection structures. If you are building both, that is a deliberate choice, not a default.
How to Decide
The Kanto nostalgia buyer: Knock Out Collection or ETB on September 16, Booster Bundle as a separate October pre-order. Two purchases, manageable combined spend, full access to the set's classic-character distribution.
The premium UPC collector: decide now whether you want one version or both. Pikachu ex and Umbreon ex are confirmed in the Night box. The Day box has its own configuration. Neither will have a Wave 2 UPC equivalent. Pre-orders are the allocation window. This set is the first in the anniversary line to require a choice between two distinct premium products.
The ex-card buyer: single ex Box or the set of two, depending on which character you collect. Four packs each. Separate from the Kanto nostalgia play.
The pack-efficiency buyer: Booster Bundle in October, possibly paired with a Knock Out Collection for September 16.
