Ice Rider Calyrex and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX launched in the same booster pack on Chilling Reign's June 18, 2021 release date, and they have never been treated the same way since.

Both are Calyrex, Galar's legendary High King. Both share the VMAX frame, the same set, and the same pull rates. But their alternate art cards diverged sharply in collector demand: one became a dominant tournament archetype and the other stayed a quiet collector favorite.

If you're tracking down Calyrex cards in 2026, knowing which version you want and why makes a real difference to your budget. This checklist covers every Calyrex VMAX card worth knowing, what drives the price gap between the two forms, and where the sealed product landscape sits today.

What Is Chilling Reign?

Chilling Reign was the sixth main Sword & Shield set, released June 18, 2021.

It brought two new legendary Pokémon forms into the English TCG: Ice Rider Calyrex, a psychic-type paired with the ice horse Glastrier, and Shadow Rider Calyrex, a psychic-type paired with the ghost horse Spectrier. The set boxart features both forms side by side, and for a brief moment they looked like equals.

The set ran to 233 cards in total, with the standard numbered set reaching 198 cards and the Secret Rare cards beyond that carrying some of the highest collector interest in the entire Sword & Shield era.

The Ice Rider Calyrex Checklist

Ice Rider Calyrex appears as a Psychic-type with attacks built around Energy accumulation. The standard VMAX card is straightforward: a large VMAX frame, the icy mount Glastrier, and a clean composition that works well in a binder. It's accessible in price and widely available from single-card sellers on independent platforms.

The Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX alternate art is a different proposition. The card shows Calyrex in a sweeping winter landscape with Glastrier at full gallop, rendered in a full-card illustration that extends to the edges. It's one of the more visually striking Chilling Reign Secret Rares, and collectors hunting complete Chilling Reign alt art sets have to include it.

Ice Rider's standing in 2026

Ice Rider Calyrex saw minimal tournament play compared to its Shadow Rider counterpart. Without that competitive legacy driving secondary demand, the alt art settled at a more accessible price point than many SWSH-era Secret Rares of similar visual quality.

For collectors, that's actually the opportunity. The Ice Rider alt art is one of the better-looking Chilling Reign cards at a price that doesn't require a significant commitment. Anyone building a SWSH Secret Rare collection who skips it is leaving an obvious gap.

The Shadow Rider Calyrex Checklist

Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX took a different path entirely.

It became one of the defining Sword & Shield competitive archetypes. Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX's attack, Astral Barrage, hits for 10 damage times the total number of Psychic Energy cards on all of your Pokémon, and with the right support cards the archetype could accelerate to enormous numbers in one turn. It dominated tournament tables through late 2021 and into 2022, appearing consistently in top-cut finishes at regional and national events.

Tournament demand amplifies collector demand. Players who ran Shadow Rider decks wanted high-grade copies. Collectors who missed the competitive era still want the card for its historical significance.

The result: Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX, both the standard VMAX and especially the alternate art, commands a significant premium over Ice Rider's equivalent.

The Shadow Rider VMAX alt art depicts Calyrex riding Spectrier across a ghostly landscape, the composition saturated in purples and blacks with a sense of motion that makes it one of the most visually dramatic cards in the set. It's the card most buyers come to Chilling Reign searching for.

The VMAX Window Is Closed

This is the detail most buyers overlook.

The Scarlet & Violet era replaced VMAX Pokémon with ex Pokémon as the primary VSTAR successor. Neither Calyrex form has received a new ex card as of September 2026, and even if they did, it would be a different card type entirely. The VMAX framing, the specific artwork, and the competitive context of the 2021 Chilling Reign release are locked in time.

Collectors who want Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX alt art or Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX alt art must source from Chilling Reign singles or sealed product. There is no reprint path. The Pokémon Company's current TCG lineup is fully ex-era, and VMAX cards are not being reintroduced.

That permanence is meaningful for collectors. Every SWSH-era VMAX alt art is a finite print run in a retired card type. The Chilling Reign alt arts are part of that permanent record.

Where to Find Calyrex Cards in 2026

Chilling Reign sealed product is now vintage territory. Booster boxes command prices well above their original retail, and ETBs are increasingly rare at accessible price points. Most collectors pursuing Calyrex VMAX cards are targeting singles through independent card shops rather than cracking sealed product.

The connected sealed product worth noting is Crown Zenith, the final Sword & Shield set released January 20, 2023. Crown Zenith's Galarian Gallery subset covers 70 cards from across the entire SWSH era, providing another angle on SWSH legendary content. Collectors building a complete SWSH Galar legendary sealed collection often use Crown Zenith as the more accessible entry point, while sourcing Chilling Reign cards as singles.

Crown Zenith sealed formats currently available through independent shops include booster bundles, individual packs, and the Elite Trainer Box, all at prices reflecting the set's status as the SWSH final chapter rather than a brand-new release. These are not budget purchases, but they represent the accessible end of the SWSH sealed spectrum in 2026.

The Verdict: Which Form to Chase?

Chase Ice Rider if you're building a comprehensive Chilling Reign alt art set on a defined budget. The card is visually excellent and significantly more attainable than its Shadow Rider counterpart. It's the Chilling Reign alt art that rewards patient collectors who aren't competing on price.

Chase Shadow Rider if you want the Chilling Reign card most closely associated with tournament history. The competitive legacy has made it the set's signature collector piece. Expect to pay a meaningful premium over Ice Rider's equivalent.

That gap is not a temporary market condition. It's built into how the card is regarded.

Either way, both cards share the permanent reality of the VMAX era's closure. Neither form is coming back in a new frame. What exists in Chilling Reign is what exists.
