Fighting-Type Pokémon TCG Cards: A Collector's Guide for 2026

Fighting-type is one of the most misunderstood collector types in the Pokémon TCG.

Most collectors associate the type with Machamp and not much else. That instinct is partly right: Machamp 8/102 is the card that anchors the type's history. But the full picture runs from a quirky Base Set production detail all the way through to one of the most expensive pulls in the 2025 Mega Evolution set.

If you collect by type, Fighting deserves a closer look. Here is what the type covers, card by card, and what collectors are actually paying in 2026.

The Machamp Starter Deck Secret

Machamp 8/102 has a production history unlike any other Base Set holo.

According to Bulbapedia's entry on Machamp (Base Set 8), it was distributed as a "Deck Exclusive" in the Two-Player Starter Set rather than pulled from booster packs. That detail matters for collectors in two directions.

First, more 1st Edition copies exist than you might expect for a Base Set holo. The card shipped with every Two-Player Starter Set sold in 1999, so the raw count of 1st Edition Machamp cards in the world exceeds most other 1st Edition holos.

Second, and this is the counterintuitive part: high-grade copies are rarer than the numbers suggest. Starter Set buyers were often kids using the card in actual play. Most 1st Edition Machamp copies saw shuffling, bending, and wear in a way that booster-pulled holos, often sleeved immediately by collectors, did not.

The result is a card that costs less in raw played condition than its 1st Edition peers while commanding a premium for NM and higher examples.

Raw, played copies of the 1st Edition start around $27 USD. Shadowless NM examples have been listed in the $65 range. PSA 9s and 10s push considerably higher, and the gap between a moderately graded copy and a gem mint one is wider for Machamp than for most Base Set holos.

The Shadowless version (no shadow border) is the correct chase copy. The later unlimited print is common and typically sells for a few dollars.

The Diamond and Pearl Bridge: Machamp LV.X

For collectors interested in the gap between Base Set and the modern era, Machamp LV.X from Diamond and Pearl: Stormfront is the type's best mid-period pickup.

LV.X cards layered on top of a base Machamp in play, effectively powering up the Pokémon mid-game. The mechanic is specific to the Diamond and Pearl through Platinum era, and Stormfront's Machamp LV.X (98/100) became a competitive staple at the time. That combination of format relevance and the LV.X novelty gives it lasting collector interest.

NM copies sit in the CA$100 range from independent shops, which is reasonable for a holo-adjacent secret rare from a set that preceded the ultra-rare printing era. It is worth noting that the card has a consistent floor, not dramatic growth, so it appeals to collectors who want a stable hold rather than a speculative one.

Lucario EX and the Full Art Era

Lucario changed Fighting-type's collector story permanently in 2014.

The XY Furious Fists set was the Fighting-type's showcase expansion, leaning into Lucario's popularity with several strong cards. The standout for collectors is Lucario EX (107/111) Full Art. It was a genuine competitive card at release and its Full Art artwork has held its visual appeal well into the modern era.

Current prices for NM copies range from $68 to $103 across independent shops, with light-played examples sitting slightly below that band. That range has held for a couple of years, which makes this card reliable for a type collection rather than a volatile flip.

There is also a Secret Rare Mega Lucario EX (113/111) from the same set, which commands significantly more. If your budget extends to $185 or higher, that is the premium Furious Fists target, though the Full Art is the more collected card by volume.

The Modern Chase: Mega Lucario ex in the Mega Evolution Set

If you follow only one Fighting-type card right now, this is it.

The English Mega Evolution set, released in 2025, made Mega Lucario ex the type's current flagship chase. Bulbapedia's Mega Evolution (TCG) page covers the set's structure: Mega Lucario ex appears in multiple rarities, with the Special Illustration Rare (179/132) being the dominant collector target.

Ungraded NM copies of the SIR sit between $190 and $250 across independent sellers. PSA 9s have appeared in the $280 range. For perspective, the standard Hyper Rare (188/132) has reached $700 graded at PSA 10, which tells you how much grading premium exists in this card.

There are also more accessible Mega Lucario ex entries: the ME Black Star Promo (MEP-033) runs $12 to $15 and uses similar artwork at a fraction of the SIR's price. That promo is a reasonable way to put Mega Lucario ex in a Fighting-type binder without the outlay.

Where to Start: Entry Points Across the Budget Range

Not every Fighting-type collector needs a $200 card.

Lucario VSTAR (SWSH Black Star Promo SWSH291) is the type's best affordable modern anchor. It is a standalone promo released during the Sword and Shield era, with clean full-art-adjacent artwork and strong collector recognition. At $8 to $14 for NM copies, it fills the modern slot in a type collection without requiring a significant investment.

A practical three-card Fighting-type binder layout would be: Machamp 8/102 1st Edition in played condition ($27) for the vintage anchor, Lucario EX Full Art ($68 to $90) for the XY era, and Lucario VSTAR for the modern period. That total runs under $130 and covers the type's three most recognizable chapters.

From there, the LV.X and the Mega Evolution SIR are natural upgrades as budget allows. Neither is urgent. Both have been available in independent shops consistently through 2026.
