Hoopa and Hoopa-Unbound Collector's Guide 2026: Two Forms, the Japanese Movie Promo, and the Kalos Window

Hoopa is the only Kalos Mythical with two forms that require a specific held item to switch between, and the collector market has priced that duality into everything from plush to graded promos.

As documented on Serebii, Hoopa Confined (#720) stands 0.5m (1'08") and weighs 9.0kg. Its Unbound form stretches to 6.5m (21'4") and 490.0kg: a 13x height differential in the same Pokédex entry, and no other Mythical comes close to that physical range.

The transformation requires the Prison Bottle held item and lasts exactly three days in-game before reverting to Confined form.

That mechanic shapes how collectors approach the line: two distinct forms, two separate plush profiles, and a TCG arc that has treated each form as a separate subject.

Plush: Three Lines, Two Forms

The Pokémon Fit series covers both forms separately. Hoopa Confined Fit and Hoopa-Unbound Fit are both Japanese Pokémon Center exclusives imported via third-party sellers.

The Hoopa-Unbound Fit is the floor entry for the Unbound form at $24.00 (Ichiba Japan) to $24.99 (Collector Store LLC). The Confined Fit runs a comparable range.

The Sanei All Star Collection PP75 Hoopa plush runs 8.5 inches and covers Confined form. Board Wipe has it at $29.99, which is the current floor across active US sellers. The Sanei line is more articulated than the Fit series, with defined arm and head positioning rather than the chibi flat-body style.

The Sitting Cuties line captures the form split most clearly. Hoopa Confined gets a 5.5-inch plush at $29.99 (Dick & Jane's), and Hoopa-Unbound gets an 8.5-inch version at $52.42 (ToyCartUSA).

The Unbound version is 55% more expensive and physically larger, despite the in-game size gap being 13:1.

That premium reflects collector demand on the rarer, more dramatic form. Unbound appears less frequently in mainstream retail, and the six-arm design is visually distinct enough that many collectors who own the Confined form will eventually pursue the Unbound separately.

TCG Arc: Shining Legends to the V Box

Hoopa's English TCG history starts with the Shining Legends subset. Hoopa 55/73 is a Holo Rare in that set, currently at $0.49 at Card Cavern Trading Cards. It is the lowest-cost entry into the English Hoopa collection and the only Hoopa Holo Rare from the SM era small set.

The Hoopa V Box followed in the Sword and Shield era. It contains four Fusion Strike booster packs and an oversized Hoopa V promo card (SWSH176). The oversized promo itself is available separately for as little as £0.79 at Total Cards UK, which means the box's collector value rests almost entirely on the four Fusion Strike packs inside.

Fusion Strike (SWSH08) is the set that introduced Mew VMAX, one of the most-played cards in competitive SWSH-era formats. A Hoopa V Box opened for pack value carries a reasonable pull target beyond the promo itself. That dynamic has kept the box at $94 floor (Squirtle Squad Card Shop) years past its original release window, rather than settling below MSRP the way many V Boxes eventually do.

The 155/XY-P Japanese Theater Promo

The highest-value Hoopa TCG card has no English equivalent.

Hoopa 155/XY-P was distributed at Japanese movie theaters during screenings of "Pokémon the Movie: Hoopa and the Clash of Ages" in 2015. The distribution was Japan-only and theater-only: attendees received the card at the venue, and no parallel English language version with this distribution method was produced. That combination of regional exclusivity and event-only access makes it one of the more structurally interesting Kalos-era promos.

Ungraded raw copies start at $72 (Hobby Expert CA) and run to $266–$290 on active NM listings. PSA 9 examples are at CA$750 (CaptCan Comics), with graded 9.5 copies listed above $1,200 AUD at The Card Spot.

The spread from raw floor to graded premium is roughly 17x. That is wide even by event-promo standards.

The card uses the Hoopa Confined art and depicts the standard form, not Unbound. That is a deliberate design choice for the movie tie-in, since the film's central plot involves Hoopa transitioning between forms.

The Kalos Window: Why October 2026

Hoopa is a Kalos region Mythical, first introduced in Generation VI alongside X and Y. Legends: Z-A, the first mainline Pokémon game set in Kalos since 2013, releases October 16, 2026.

That matters for collector timing. Kalos Pokémon search volume historically tracks mainline releases set in their region, and Xerneas, Yveltal, and other Gen 6 Mythicals have already shown increased interest in the weeks approaching the Z-A window.

Hoopa is no exception. The two-form mechanic makes it one of the more narratively interesting Gen 6 entries for collectors discovering the region through the game for the first time.

The Fit plush floor at $24 and the Sitting Cuties Confined at $29.99 are both at current market pricing. Neither is showing the kind of secondary-market inflation that would suggest the window has already closed.

Collector Entry Map

The four logical starting points, ranked by price and commitment level:

  • $0.49: Hoopa 55/73 Shining Legends Holo Rare (Card Cavern), the lowest-cost English TCG entry.
  • $24.00: Hoopa-Unbound Pokémon Fit plush (Ichiba Japan), floor price for the harder-to-find form in plush format.
  • $29.99: Hoopa Confined Sitting Cuties 5.5" (Dick & Jane's) or Sanei PP75 8.5" (Board Wipe), two different plush styles at the same price point.
  • $72.00: Hoopa 155/XY-P Japanese promo ungraded (Hobby Expert), entry to the theater-exclusive card without committing to graded tier.
  • $94.00+: Hoopa V Box (Squirtle Squad Card Shop, floor), the main sealed product with four Fusion Strike packs included.

The 155/XY-P at $72 is the only entry point with a meaningful ceiling above it. A PSA 9 at CA$750 is roughly 10x the raw floor, which is a wider grade premium than most Kalos event cards. Collectors who buy raw at the floor and pursue grading are effectively making a bet on pop report rarity more than on raw card demand.

For new collectors, the Fit plush pair (Confined + Unbound) at $24–$25 each is the cleanest way to represent both forms without committing to TCG spending. They are the most form-accurate representations in the current in-stock product range.
