Hydreigon, Deino, and Zweilous Collector's Guide 2026: Dark Trance Legacy, the White Flare IR Sweep, and Every Entry Point

Three clear entry points cover the Hydreigon collector arc: a $4.55 BW-era competitive relic, a $3 Scarlet and Violet Double Rare, and a $38–45 Special Illustration Rare that is the current English apex.

The Deino evolution line runs from a Dark-type debut in Black and White through an XY-only EX, a quiet SWSH gap, and then a fully realized SV collector tier spanning two sets. In 2025, the Japanese White Flare set added something that had never happened before: all three stages of the line received above-set illustration treatment in the same release. This guide traces each of those moments and what they cost right now.

The 64-Level Threshold

Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at Level 64, the highest standard evolution level for any non-legendary Pokémon in Black and White.

Deino cannot learn Dragon-type moves until it becomes Zweilous, and even then the line's access to Dragon-type attacks in the wild is limited. The design intentionality is clear: players must commit a significant portion of a playthrough to raise this line to its final form. That reputation for difficulty followed Hydreigon into competitive play and, eventually, into its TCG history.

BW Era: The Dark Trance Card

Hydreigon (97/124) Black and White: Dragons Exalted · $4.55 USD

The card that defined Hydreigon's BW reputation is Dragons Exalted 97/124, released August 2012.

Its Ability, Dark Trance, moved Dark Energy from any Pokémon on the field to any other Pokémon once per turn. Paired with Darkrai EX's Night Spear, this engine let players rapidly power up benched attackers while spreading 30 damage to the opponent's bench simultaneously.

The combination was one of the defining control strategies of the 2012–2013 competitive season: the kind of two-card synergy that shapes a format's identity.

Raw near-mint copies of Dragons Exalted 97/124 now list around $4.55. That price reflects the card's place in a mass-printed 2012 BW set: historically significant and competitively famous, but widely available because the era's print runs were large. It is the most accessible starting point for Hydreigon collectors who want something with a real competitive backstory, not just a visual highlight.

XY Era: The Only EX

Between the BW competitive peak and the SV collector surge, Hydreigon received exactly one major English EX card: Roaring Skies 103/108, released May 2015.

Hydreigon EX's Ability, Hyper Lure, let the player switch the opponent's Active Pokémon with one of their Benched ones when Hydreigon EX entered the Active spot. The Full Art version (103/108) lists between $16 and $42 near-mint raw depending on seller, with the gap driven by condition grading disagreements rather than print scarcity. There is no competing Hydreigon EX in any other English XY set, making Roaring Skies the sole XY representation for a line that otherwise sat out the EX era entirely.

For collectors building a complete era-spanning binder, the Roaring Skies Full Art EX is the bridge card: it closes the gap between the 2012 BW Dark Trance card and the modern SV prints without requiring a premium outlay.

SV Era: Three Formats in One English Set

Hydreigon ex (119/191) Double Rare: Surging Sparks

$3.00 USD

Surging Sparks (SV08, November 2024) placed Hydreigon ex across three distinct print tiers inside a single English set.

The Double Rare at 119/191 lists around $3. The Ultra Rare at 223/191 runs $6 to $10. The Special Illustration Rare at 240/191 sits at $38–45 near-mint raw across current sellers.

All three carry identical game text: the collector premium is entirely artwork-driven. The SIR at 240/191 uses the full-bleed extended-artwork format introduced with the SV era, giving Hydreigon the visual staging that its BW and XY cards never provided.

The within-set spread is 12–15x between the DR and the SIR. That ratio is consistent with how SV-era sets price illustration premium versus base ex cards for second-tier characters: not the 40–90x gaps seen for Eevee or Pikachu, but a meaningful collector tier that rewards the SIR hold without pricing out the entry-level buyer.

White Flare: The First Triple-Stage IR Sweep

The 2025 Japanese set White Flare (SV11W) gave the Deino line something it had never received before.

Deino 146/086 (Illustration Rare) and Zweilous 147/086 (Illustration Rare) sit together in the above-set section of White Flare alongside Hydreigon ex SIR 169/086. All three stages of the same evolution line hold above-set illustration treatment in the same Japanese release.

That has not happened for the Deino line in any prior set, in any language. The Zweilous IR is the most notable part of this: Zweilous had no above-set treatment in English across the entire Sword and Shield era, making the White Flare cards its first-ever full-bleed illustration format appearance.

Deino 146/086 lists around $18–20 near-mint raw. Zweilous 147/086 runs $11–13.

The Hydreigon ex SIR 169/086 (Japanese) sits at $79–100, carrying the expected premium for a Japanese-exclusive SIR. Collectors building the complete triple-IR set have a clear cost structure: under $35 for the two pre-evolutions, $79 and up for the apex.

Plush Options

Hydreigon Plush Pokémon Fit from Pokémon Center

Hydreigon Plush Pokémon Fit

$21.00 USD

Two distinct plush tiers exist for Hydreigon right now.

The Pokémon Fit line plush at $21 is the compact seated design shared across the Fit series: identifiable posture, consistent scale, the standard choice for collectors building a full-Fit set or a uniform shelf row. Deino and Zweilous Fit plushes are also in stock from Japanese import sellers, making a complete three-stage set achievable for under $65 combined.

The All Star Collection PP215 at $32 is the San-ei Boeki premium option. It uses a larger scale and softer fill than the Fit line, and its triple-head silhouette reads better at shelf distance than the Fit version's more condensed form. The $11 gap between the two tiers is the straightforward tradeoff: size and fill quality versus shelf uniformity with the broader Fit collection.

Which Cards to Prioritize

For competitive history

Dragons Exalted 97/124 at $4.55 is the only card in this line's TCG history that shaped a competitive format. The Dark Trance engine is a documented part of the BW era meta. At under $5 raw, it is the highest historical-value-per-dollar purchase in the Hydreigon catalog.

For the SV collector tier

The Surging Sparks SIR 240/191 at $38–45 is the current English apex. It holds the full-bleed SIR format that no prior Hydreigon card achieved, and it sits within the mainstream collector budget. The DR at $3 is the natural companion: same set, same game text, a fraction of the price.

For the White Flare sweep

The Deino and Zweilous IRs from White Flare are the only above-set illustration cards for those two stages in any language. At $11–20 each, they are underpriced relative to how unique the coverage is. The Hydreigon ex SIR 169/086 at $79–100 completes the set but asks for a meaningful budget commitment: the Japanese SIR commands a premium that the equivalent English SIR does not.
