Volcarona Collector's Guide 2026: Noble Victories to the Black Bolt Illustration Rare
By Dexhaul Team · September 23, 2026
Volcarona has one of the longest collector ladders in the TCG for a non-legendary Pokémon.
The flame moth's English card history runs from 2011 to 2025, from a $0.74 Noble Victories debut to a $61 Illustration Rare in Black Bolt. Larvesta, the pre-evolution, has built its own collector tier in recent Japanese sets. This guide traces every meaningful price point, era by era, so you can enter at the right level for your collection.
The In-Game Foundation
Understanding Volcarona's collector appeal starts with its unusual status in the main-series games.
In Black and White, players could find a wild Volcarona at Level 70 inside Relic Castle, one of the highest-levelled wild encounters in those games. For a non-legendary, that placement was striking. It gave Volcarona a reputation that preceded its trading card debut by only a matter of months.
Larvesta contributes its own piece to that prestige. It evolves at Level 59: among the highest standard evolution thresholds in any main-series game. The investment required in-game to obtain a battle-ready Volcarona is proportional to the patience collectors have since put into acquiring its premium prints.
Noble Victories: The 2011 TCG Debut
Volcarona entered the English TCG in Noble Victories (BW3), released November 2011, as card 21/101. Raw copies sit at $0.74 to $1.30 from most singles sellers today, making this one of the most accessible first-appearance cards from the BW era.
The debut card gave Volcarona immediate TCG presence without a premium price tag. That dynamic has defined the species ever since: a wide availability floor with a concentrated apex for collectors willing to go deeper.
For a BW-era Pokémon debut, the NVI print is well-preserved in the secondary market. It's the right first acquisition for anyone starting a binder focused on this line.
XY Era: Standard Sets and the League Promo Window
The XY era gave Volcarona two standard releases. Ancient Origins contained cards 17/98 and 18/98, followed by Steam Siege with 15/114. Both sets carry Volcarona singles under $2 raw near-mint, consistent with other non-featured XY rares.
The standout in this era is the XY: Steam Siege League Promo. Tournament-stamp promos carry a premium above the base card print: the 1st Place stamp version lists around $45, the 3rd Place version near $20.
They represent competition-context collecting rather than artwork collecting. The stamp is the value, not the illustration.
Most collectors skip this tier entirely unless they are building a complete competitive-history set for the species. If stamp promos are not part of your focus, the XY era is safely a gap in the Volcarona collection.
Cosmic Eclipse: The GX Era Sets the Ceiling
Cosmic Eclipse (SM12, November 2019) is the pivot point in Volcarona's collector history. Three cards in one set: a standard GX at 35/236, a Full Art at 213/236, and a gold Secret Rare at 252/236.
The Full Art 213/236 is the most widely held Volcarona artwork in collections today. It uses a saturated fire-sky composition, currently around $10 raw near-mint. It's the natural pairing with the plush if you're building a shelf display focused on this species.
The Secret Rare 252/236 is the card most serious Volcarona collectors prioritize from this era. SM-era gold Secret Rares use a textured foil card stock that reads physically different from standard holos. The 252/236 puts Volcarona on that gold ground, priced between $18 and $24 raw near-mint across current sellers.
Spending roughly twice the Full Art price to get the GX Secret Rare is a straightforward trade for collectors who want the era's apex print. Both sit well within accessible range by the standards of competitive-era Secret Rares.
Sword and Shield: The V Era
The Sword and Shield era introduced Volcarona V in Evolving Skies (SWSH7): card 021/203 as an Ultra Rare and 170/203 as a Full Art. Crown Zenith followed with a standard 25/159.
Raw prices across all three sit between $0.35 and $5, making this the cheapest entry into artwork that postdates the GX era. The Evolving Skies Full Art V is the pick here if you want SWSH-era Volcarona art on a minimal budget.
Black Bolt: The Illustration Rare Arrives
Black Bolt (SV11B) is where Volcarona's English TCG arc reaches its current apex.
Card 100/086 is Volcarona's first Illustration Rare in any English set. The full-bleed extended artwork format that defines the IR tier gives the flame moth a showcase that fourteen years of standard releases had not produced.
The same-set standard rare, 016/086, is available for $0.47. The IR 100/086 lists between $61 and $85 near-mint raw depending on seller: a gap of more than 130x against the base print inside a single set.
Larvesta also received an Art Rare (103/086) in Black Bolt, currently listing at $6 to $7 for the English print. Collectors who want the full evolution line have a natural pair in this set: the Larvesta AR at a reasonable entry price alongside the Volcarona IR as the long-game hold.
Plush and Figures
Outside the TCG, the Pokémon Fit line plush is Volcarona's primary collectible. The official Fit plush renders the flame moth's signature wing-circle silhouette and is currently available from Japanese import specialists between $17 and $25, depending on seller.
Takara Tomy's Moncolle Volcarona is the figure option: a compact sculpt available from Asian import stores, with a Special Edition version listed around $13.69. Both items pair naturally with the GX Full Art for a display setup.
There is no standard Pokémon Center plush beyond the Fit line for Volcarona as of late 2025, and no figure at the premium Kotobukiya scale.
Buying by Budget
Under $5
Noble Victories 21/101 raw at $0.74 is the historically significant choice at this tier: the BW debut, the card that started the collector arc. Crown Zenith 25/159 and Black Bolt 016/086 both sit under $1 if modern SV-era art is the preference.
$10 to $25
The Cosmic Eclipse Full Art 213/236 at $10 is the best value in this range for art-focused collectors. The GX Secret Rare 252/236 at $18 to $24 is the step up for collectors who want the gold-foil treatment from the SM era. At $17 to $25, the Pokemon Fit plush rounds out this tier for merchandise collectors.
$45 and above
Two distinct options at this level: the Steam Siege League 1st Place promo at $45 for competition-history context, and the Black Bolt Illustration Rare 100/086 at $61 as the apex artwork purchase. These serve different collector goals. The IR 100/086 is the definitive Volcarona card for anyone building toward the species apex.
