Persian Collector's Guide 2026: Giovanni's Cat from the 2000 WOTC Set to the Shrouded Fable Illustration Rare
By Dexhaul Team · September 23, 2026
Persian has the most unusual collecting arc of any Normal-type Pokémon in the franchise.
It spent two decades as a budget TCG card despite being the signature companion of the game's defining villain. Then Shrouded Fable arrived in 2024 and changed the math entirely. Today Persian has cards at every price point: a $4 raw uncommon from 2000, a $46 gym set holo, a $5 entry-point rare from 2025, and an Illustration Rare that lists at $75 and up.
Giovanni's Persian was never a battler in the original anime. It sat on his desk while he ran Team Rocket operations, visible but silent.
The TCG encoded that same dynamic for two decades: Persian existed in sets but rarely commanded collector attention. The story of building a Persian collection is the story of that dynamic reversing.
The 2000 Year: Two Cards, Two Rarity Tiers
The Team Rocket expansion released in May 2000. Dark Persian appeared at card 42 of 82, listed as an Uncommon with no holo treatment. For a Pokémon whose primary association was one of the franchise's defining antagonists, that was a modest treatment relative to the set's holo rares.
Dark Persian today lists from $3 to $5 raw for unlimited copies. The 1st Edition version sits in the $1 to $5 range for played copies, and reaches $30 to $60 for CGC-graded examples depending on grade. It is a collectible, not a chase card.
Five months after the Team Rocket expansion, Gym Challenge arrived in October 2000. Giovanni's Persian 8/132 was a Holo Rare.
The same Pokémon went from Uncommon to Holo Rare within a single calendar year. That gap is entirely about framing: the "Dark" prefix in the Team Rocket expansion denoted villain association but did not guarantee collector priority. The Giovanni's name in Gym Challenge attached Persian to a specific character, and that specificity elevated it to holo treatment.
Giovanni's Persian 8/132 currently lists from $33 to $46 for played-to-LP unlimited copies. The 1st Edition Near Mint range sits at $250 to $275. That is roughly an 8x premium for the same card with the additional 1st Edition stamp, a spread consistent with other WOTC-era holo rares in this tier.
The Legendary Collection reprint set (2002) added one more layer: Dark Persian appeared there with holo foil treatment. The original Dark Persian 42/82 was non-holo; the Legendary Collection version upgraded it to rare with holofoil, making it one of the only Dark series cards to receive that treatment after its initial printing. That variant currently lists from $35 to $100 depending on condition.
The Plush Tier
The Pokémon Center Japan Fit plush series includes a Persian at $19 to $30 across independent sellers. It captures the sitting pose most associated with the character from the original series.
For collectors who want a low-commitment entry into the character without engaging the TCG complexity, the Fit plush is a straightforward option at the lower end of the price range. The Sitting Cuties variant from Pokémon Center runs around $30 and offers a slightly different pose.
The SV Revival: Team Rocket's Persian ex (2025)
Destined Rivals (sv10) released with Team Rocket's Persian ex at number 219/182. It is an Ultra Rare currently listing from $5 to $10 raw.
That price reflects where it sits in the set hierarchy: Destined Rivals assigns the "Team Rocket's" prefix to multiple cards, including Mewtwo ex, Moltres ex, Nidoking ex, Garchomp ex, and Yanmega ex. With five Team Rocket-named cards in the set, collector demand distributes across all of them. Persian ex does not carry the same character pull as Mewtwo ex, which pushes its Ultra Rare floor to the $5 range.
The timeline makes this card specifically notable: Dark Persian appeared in 2000 as part of the original Team Rocket expansion. The next Team Rocket-branded Persian card arrived in 2025 via Destined Rivals. That is 25 years between Team Rocket-associated Persian cards in the English market.
The WOTC "Dark" prefix became the SV "Team Rocket's" prefix. Same character, same villain affiliation, completely different naming convention.
For collectors building around the TCG Pocket digital-to-physical bridge, this is the current entry-point card. Team Rocket's Ambition in TCG Pocket (launched August 2026) drove renewed search for physical Team Rocket product, and Persian ex at $5 is an accessible anchor in that arc.
The 2024 Apex: Shrouded Fable Illustration Rare
Shrouded Fable released in 2024. Persian 078/064 appeared in the Illustration Rare tier.
The Shrouded Fable main set contains 64 cards. Persian is numbered 078, placing it above the set ceiling in the above-set alternate art tier. That positioning is typically occupied by starters, Legendaries, and high-demand characters.
Persian is none of those. The Shrouded Fable IR is the first time Persian has received that level of art treatment in any English set.
The art shows Persian in a moonlit scene, an aesthetic choice that sits completely apart from the character's usual context in brightly lit administrative settings. It currently lists from $75 to $95 raw across multiple sellers.
For context: Dark Persian raw at $4, Persian Illustration Rare at $75. That is roughly an 18x gap between the floor entry and the current apex for the same character, both within the active collector market in 2026.
Building a Persian Collection in 2026
The most practical entry point is Team Rocket's Persian ex (DRI-219) at $5. It is the current Team Rocket arc card, connects directly to the TCG Pocket bridge audience, and places a 2025 rare in the collection without significant cost.
Adding Dark Persian 42/82 raw at $3 to $4 and the Persian Fit plush at $19 puts a 2000 uncommon, a 2025 rare, and a plush together for under $30. That is three distinct tiers of the character's collecting history for the price of a mid-range coffee order.
The upgrade step is Giovanni's Persian 8/132 from Gym Challenge. At $33 to $46 for played-to-LP unlimited copies, this is the only WOTC-era Holo Rare specifically attributed to Giovanni.
Its value relative to Dark Persian illustrates exactly how much the character framing mattered in 2000. Dark Persian was generic villain fodder. Giovanni's Persian was a gym leader's signature.
The apex is the Shrouded Fable Illustration Rare at $75 to $95. It is the first above-set card Persian has received in any English printing, and it sits 18x above the floor entry from the same character.
For graded specimens, Giovanni's Persian 8/132 1st Edition Near Mint lists at $250 to $275 ungraded, and PSA-graded copies at PSA 8 have reached the high $200 to $300 range at auction.
