Moltres Collector's Guide 2026: Fossil Holo, Galarian Dark Form, and the October 2 Mini Tin

Moltres is the only one of the three Kanto legendary birds to have its original typing erased entirely by its Galarian form.

Articuno gains Psychic but keeps Flying. Zapdos gains Fighting but keeps Flying.

Moltres drops Fire completely and becomes Dark/Flying, crossing into a different collector demographic. That type change splits the Moltres market into two structurally separate arcs, each with its own card pool, price range, and sealed products.

Here is how both arcs look in 2026, from the Fossil Set holo to the October 2 Mini Tin launch.

The Kanto Arc: Fossil Set to Team Rocket's Moltres

The original Kanto Moltres appeared as holo rare 12/62 in the Fossil Set (October 1999), where it shared the holo rare tier with Zapdos and Articuno. All three birds landed in the same set, same rarity, and similar price range when raw.

The Fossil set is the only place in the WOTC era where all three Kanto legendary birds appear together in a single release as standard pulls. That makes it a natural set anchor for collectors building a complete bird line.

Raw Unlimited NM copies sit around $48–$49 in the current catalogue. The 1st Edition print carries a significant premium above that, consistent with all WOTC-era 1st Edition holo rares from a non-Base Set release.

The next major milestone for Kanto Moltres is the Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno GX Tag Team promo (SM210), released as a Black Star Promo in 2018. It is the only product where all three birds share a single card, and it sits at $165 in the current catalogue. That makes it an anchor for collectors who want one card representing the complete trio rather than three separate singles.

Destined Rivals: The Modern Moltres Ceiling

The highest-profile Kanto Moltres card available right now is Team Rocket's Moltres ex from Destined Rivals (SV10), released in 2025. The set contains two Moltres ex entries under the Team Rocket's branding: the Double Rare 031/182 and the Special Illustration Rare 229/182.

The Double Rare 031/182 is the gameplay entry point, priced around £3–4 raw in the current market. The SIR 229/182 is the collector ceiling.

$92.95 USD

The SIR 229/182 currently ranges from $58–$99 depending on seller, with the stamped Destined Rivals variant at the lower end. That range places it significantly below Mewtwo ex SIR 231/182 from the same set, which sits above $400.

Both are SIRs at the same pull-rate tier. The gap is entirely character demand, not rarity.

The "Team Rocket's" naming convention is the same format used in the original 2000 Team Rocket expansion, making Destined Rivals the first time in 25 years that Moltres has been packaged under that branding.

The Galarian Arc: Dark/Flying and a Different Price Ladder

Galarian Moltres arrived in the Crown Tundra DLC for Pokémon Sword and Shield in October 2020, and its TCG debut came in Chilling Reign (SWSH6) in 2021. The typing change from Fire/Flying to Dark/Flying is structurally significant for collectors: Dark-type cards fall into a different thematic search category than Fire-type cards, pulling in collectors who focus on the Dark type alongside those who follow the legendary bird line.

Chilling Reign contains two Galarian Moltres V entries: the standard Ultra Rare 176/198 and the Alt Full Art 177/198. The standard is available under $26 CAD raw. The Alt Full Art sits well above that, in a different price tier.

Galarian Moltres received a Trainer Gallery slot as TG20/TG30 in Astral Radiance (2022), available around $24. The Crown Zenith Galarian Moltres tin (2023) packages a sealed Galarian Moltres V promo with booster packs and sits at $157 in the current market, making it the most accessible sealed Galarian product still in circulation.

There is no Galarian Moltres ex or SIR in the Scarlet and Violet era as of September 2026. The entire Galarian collector ceiling sits within the Sword and Shield era. That is a structural gap: collectors who want the most-premium Galarian Moltres card are limited to the 2021–2022 print window, with no SV-era equivalent available yet.

The Tag Team: All Three Birds on One Card

The Moltres and Zapdos and Articuno GX Black Star Promo SM210 is the only English-language card to feature all three Kanto legendary birds simultaneously.

SM210 is a Tag Team GX card that combines all three birds into a single card with combined HP. It was distributed as a Black Star Promo in 2018 and is the promo format most associated with the trio as a unified collector target. At $165, it sits above the individual Fossil holos and serves as a different kind of set capstone for the Kanto bird collector.

No equivalent Galarian trio card exists. The three Galarian birds have separate TCG card lines with no shared product. That is a further distinction between the two collecting arcs: the Kanto arc has a unifying cross-bird product; the Galarian arc does not.

October 2: The Mini Tin Milestone

The 30th Celebration Mini Tin lineup, launching October 2, 2026, includes a dedicated Moltres variant at $34.95.

This is the first Mini Tin product to headline Moltres as a standalone character.

The previous 30th Celebration Mini Tins in the first wave focused on Pikachu, Mewtwo, Espeon, Umbreon, Lapras, and Greninja. The October 2 wave adds Moltres alongside Articuno and Zapdos, completing the Kanto legendary bird trio within the Mini Tin line.

Each tin includes two booster packs, a sticker sheet, and a collectible art card.

At $34.95 retail, this is the lowest-cost entry point for a Moltres-branded sealed product in the current market. The Team Rocket's Moltres ex Ultra Premium Collection sits at $280–$712 depending on seller. The Mini Tin and the UPC represent opposite ends of the Moltres sealed-product range, with nothing at mid-range: there is no Moltres ETB, no Moltres V Box, and no Moltres Pin Collection in the current catalogue.

For collectors who want a physical October 2 purchase tied to the Moltres line specifically, the Mini Tin is the only option at or near retail price.

Where the Two Arcs Stand Now

Kanto Moltres has a continuous card history from 1999 through 2025. The Fossil holo remains the WOTC era anchor at $48–$49 raw.

The Destined Rivals SIR is the modern ceiling at $58–$99 depending on variant. The Tag Team SM210 promo covers the cross-bird angle at $165.

Galarian Moltres has a shorter but denser arc: standard V and Alt Full Art in Chilling Reign (2021), Trainer Gallery TG20 in Astral Radiance (2022), Crown Zenith tin (2023), and no SV-era ex card yet. The Galarian ceiling is lower than the Kanto ceiling and concentrated in a narrower print window.

Neither arc overlaps. A collector focused on the original Kanto Moltres does not need any Galarian card to complete their collection, and vice versa. That is an unusual situation among Pokémon with regional forms, and it makes Moltres a genuinely bifurcated market rather than a linear one.
