Piplup in 2026: Four Ways to Collect the Sinnoh Water Starter

Piplup is one of the few Pokémon with a deeper plush catalogue than its TCG singles market.
As Gen 4's Water starter from the Sinnoh region, it has appeared in Pokémon Center import lines, the Squishmallow licensed range, and multiple Japanese collector series. The card market, by contrast, runs mostly to inexpensive commons with two standout exceptions in the current Mega Evolution print run.

The Plush Lineup
No other format captures Piplup as a physical object the way plush does. The range spans from a $17 import figure to a 40cm oversized showpiece, and the lines in between cover meaningfully different aesthetics.
Pokémon Fit
The Pokémon Fit plush at $17 is the clearest entry point. It's a small, accurate figure in the squared-off Fit style, produced for Pokémon Center Japan and available through import specialists.
The scale puts it closer to a palm-sized charm than a shelf centerpiece. That's not a limitation; Fit plush are designed to be handled and carried, and the Piplup version holds the correct proportions at that size.
Squishmallow 20 Inch
The 20-inch Squishmallow is the easiest Piplup plush to find at US retail. It's softer and rounder than the Pokémon Center imports, built for handling rather than precise display.
Squishmallow's Piplup captures the character's round silhouette well. If you want something to actually hold rather than display behind glass, this is it.
Poképeace
Takara Tomy's Pokémon Peaceful Place line (Poképeace) has produced two distinct Piplup releases available from import shops in 2026.
The Sweets edition at $39 reimagines Piplup in a pastel dessert theme with soft styling. The Together with mascot at $40 is a more classic character pose designed to sit or hang.
Neither appears in Western retail chains. Both are display-first products; the Sweets Ver. in particular has the kind of restrained palette that works well on an adult shelf alongside other Poképeace pieces from the same line.
SAN-EI Big More
The SAN-EI Big More Piplup, shown in the hero image above, stands 40cm and lists at $111 from Japanese import retailers.
SAN-EI's oversized Big More range is well-regarded for accuracy at scale, and the Piplup version holds the character's proportions correctly at that size. It's the most imposing Piplup plush available right now.
It works as a solo display piece or as the anchor of a larger Sinnoh collection.
TCG Singles Worth Knowing
Piplup has been printed in the TCG since its Diamond and Pearl debut in 2007, with a full history documented on Bulbapedia. Most vintage and modern prints are commons available under $5. Two current Mega Evolution series cards are the exceptions.
The MEP-042 Promo
The MEP-042 holofoil promo from the Mega Evolution Promos series lists for around $12-14 at independent shops. It carries the MEP promo designation rather than a standard booster-set number, distributed as part of the English Mega Evolution retail program.
The holo treatment is clean. At that price it's a practical display card, and it slots naturally into a Sinnoh starter binder alongside Turtwig and Chimchar promos from the same series.
The Phantasmal Flames Illustration Rare
The standout Piplup card right now is its Illustration Rare from ME02: Phantasmal Flames, numbered 098/094. Raw copies list at $15-19 from independent shops.
Illustration Rares feature full art that extends past the standard card border. For popular Pokémon in recent sets, IRs typically price between $30 and $100+.
A starter Pokémon IR under $20 is an anomaly in the current market. The fact that Piplup is one of the most recognizable Gen 4 characters makes the price more notable, not less.
If you collect Piplup cards, this is the one to prioritize.
Japanese Sealed Promos
One sealed Piplup promo catches most collectors off guard.
The Japanese Project Piplup 232/S-P is a sealed promotional card from a Pokémon Center Japan campaign. It carries the S-P series promo numbering reserved for select Pokémon Center exclusives. Sealed copies currently list for around $20 from import specialists.
Many collectors who focus on Western product never encounter it. The S-P series is a Japanese-only promo numbering system, so it doesn't appear in standard Western set databases unless you know to look.
The sealed condition is part of the appeal. Opening the package converts it into a standard promo single and removes the premium the original packaging carries. If you're building a focused Piplup collection, it's a low-cost way to include a piece that most Western collections don't have.
Sinnoh starters have received increased attention alongside recent 30th Anniversary TCG releases, which tends to direct more collector interest toward related back-catalogue promos. At $20, the Project Piplup promo is still priced as a curiosity rather than a trophy item.
Graded Cards
For a submission-grade Piplup card, the ME02 Phantasmal Flames Illustration Rare is the natural target. PSA 10 examples currently list around $130.
The gap between a $19 raw copy and a $130 PSA 10 is roughly 7x. That's a standard grading multiple for an in-print card from an active series; it's not speculative pricing. It reflects current demand for graded IRs in the Mega Evolution format rather than unusual collector enthusiasm for Piplup specifically.
Raw is the smarter buy for most collectors, unless display presentation in a slab specifically matters to your setup.
Where to Start
The Pokémon Fit plush and the MEP-042 promo together come in under $30. That combination gives you a physical and card representation of Piplup at a genuinely low entry cost.
From there, the Phantasmal Flames IR is the best card upgrade and the Poképeace line is the best plush upgrade. The Japanese Project Piplup promo is worth adding if you're going deep on sealed promos and want something most Western collections are missing. The SAN-EI Big More is the natural centerpiece if you want a statement piece for a Sinnoh display.
What makes Piplup interesting as a collect is that the plush market and the card market are largely independent. You can build seriously in one without duplicating the other. The depth in plush is the unusual part; most comparably popular Pokémon carry a larger card premium.
