Buy Single Strike Master (S5I) if you want Tyranitar VMAX or the aggressive one-hit battle style; buy Rapid Strike Master (S5R) if you prefer Inteleon VMAX and the multi-hit combo playstyle.

Both Japanese sets dropped together on January 22, 2021, as a pair built around Pokémon Sword and Shield's new battle style mechanic. Picking one over the other comes down to which Urshifu form you want on your team and which secret rare lineup appeals to your collection.

Where Single Strike Master wins

The Tyranitar and Mustard pull list

S5I is the only place to pull Japanese-language Tyranitar V and Tyranitar VMAX, which did not appear in S5R. For collectors who chase the Armored Darkness Tyranitar VMAX alternate art, this set is non-negotiable.

Mustard, the Sticky Barb-wielding supporter from Galar, appears as a full-art in S5I. It became one of the most-sought singles from the set. The English release split Mustard into Battle Styles too, but the Japanese art differs from the English print.

Single Strike Energy economy

Single Strike Energy appears only in S5I. If you are building a Japanese-format Single Strike deck, this set is the most direct source.

Where Rapid Strike Master wins

Inteleon and the Rapid Strike combo engine

S5R introduced Rapid Strike Inteleon, which became a staple engine in Sword and Shield-era competitive play. It paired with nearly every Rapid Strike attacker released after it. Collectors and players who want that full engine in Japanese need S5R.

Empoleon V and the water-type pull list

Empoleon V appears exclusively in S5R. It has a straightforward Water-type attacker profile and appealing full-art print. For water-type collection builders, this set provides the better pull distribution.

The deciding question

Both sets cost the same on most stores and offer the same box structure: 30 packs, 5 cards each.

If you are a competitive player building a Sword and Shield-era Japanese deck, buy the set matching your style. Single Strike lists run Urshifu SS VMAX as the main attacker. Rapid Strike lists run Urshifu RS VMAX and lean on Inteleon as an engine.

If you are a collector chasing full-arts and alternate arts, S5I wins for the Tyranitar VMAX alt art and the Mustard full-art. S5R wins for the Inteleon V alt art, which became a popular collector piece.

If you want both Urshifu forms in Japanese, buy both. They were designed as a pair and many shops list them together. The Sidekicks set bundle observed on DexHaul includes both at $3,238.00 USD (Oct 9, 2026).

FAQ

What cards are in Single Strike Master (S5I)?

Single Strike Master contains 70 main-set cards plus secret rares, featuring Single Strike Urshifu V and VMAX, Tyranitar V and VMAX, and the Mustard supporter in full-art and secret-rare variants. The set introduced Single Strike Energy.

Is Single Strike Master the same as Battle Styles?

Not exactly. Battle Styles (released March 19, 2021) is the English-language equivalent that merged content from both S5I and S5R into one 163-card set. The Japanese prints and art differ from the English release on several cards.

Is Rapid Strike or Single Strike Master worth more?

Both sets hold comparable value and are listed at similar prices across most shops. S5I is sometimes valued slightly higher due to the Tyranitar VMAX alternate art; S5R is sought for the Inteleon V alternate art. Neither is consistently more valuable than the other.

What language is Single Strike Master?

Single Strike Master (S5I) and Rapid Strike Master (S5R) are both Japanese-language sets released in Japan on January 22, 2021. Korean-language versions of both sets also exist and are sometimes listed alongside Japanese editions in import shops.

Can I mix Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards in one deck?

In standard constructed play, cards from both sets are legal together. However, Single Strike and Rapid Strike mechanics are separate: Single Strike Energy only powers Single Strike Pokémon, and Rapid Strike cards form their own synergy engine. Mixing them generally weakens both lines rather than combining their strengths.
