Eternatus Collector's Guide 2026: From the $0.18 Surging Sparks Rare to the $175 VMAX Premium Collection

Eternatus has no ex card or Special Illustration Rare in any English Scarlet and Violet main-series set as of September 2026.

That single fact shapes everything about collecting this character. Every flagship single, every collector target, and every premium sealed product sits entirely within the Sword and Shield era.

Eternatus (Pokédex 890) was introduced in Galar and dominated competitive play during the SWSH format. Its trading card footprint reflects that: two printings that matter for collectors, one dedicated sealed product, and a modern-era common that costs less than a postage stamp.

Here is every tier, what it costs today, and who each one is for.

The Modern Entry: Surging Sparks 141/191

The cheapest way to own an Eternatus card in 2026 is the reverse-holo from Surging Sparks (SV08), where 141/191 lists as low as $0.18 raw.

It's a Rare designation, not an ex, not an Illustration Rare. Surging Sparks did not give Eternatus an alternate-art treatment. The SV08 card confirms the character is still appearing in modern sets, but the lack of an ex rarity slot means collectors interested in the character at SIR or higher are looking at older product.

This card is useful as a set filler or a low-cost display card. It is not the collector destination.

Darkness Ablaze: The Home Set and Its Grading Story

Eternatus was introduced to the English TCG in Darkness Ablaze (SWSH03, August 2020), the set built around the Galar Crown Shrine storyline. Its VMAX card, 117/189, was the deck-defining competitive piece for the 2020-2021 Standard format.

The Eternatus VMAX deck ran entirely on Darkness Energy. It used the "Eternal Zone" Ability, which let players exceed the standard bench limit under specific conditions, stacking multiple dark-type attackers to power up Dread End for 270-plus damage. The strategy was fast, consistent, and remained Tier 1 for much of the SWSH format.

That competitive history pushed graded copies of the standard holo into a narrow price band: raw 117/189 sits around $3 today, while a CGC 10 version lists at $35 to $75 depending on seller, and a PSA 10 reaches $114.99. That is a 38x grade premium on a card from one of the most widely distributed SWSH sets. Darkness Ablaze was printed during peak pandemic demand in 2020 and supply of raw copies remains high, which is why the raw price has deflated while graded copies hold.

The Darkness Ablaze Elite Trainer Box (Eternatus pictured on the box face) is currently listed at $145. The booster box sits at $430 on the secondary market. These are standard SWSH sealed prices for a set that was competitively relevant; they reflect the ETB's Eternatus art and the set's format history, not any scarcity.

Shining Fates Shiny Vault: Is the $6 Raw Worth Grading?

Shining Fates (February 2021) introduced the Shiny Vault, a 122-card subset of alternate-color ("shiny") Pokémon. The Eternatus V and Eternatus VMAX appear as SV121/SV122 and SV122/SV122 respectively.

SV122/SV122 is the only card in the entire Shining Fates Shiny Vault numbered at the vault's maximum. Every other Shiny Vault card is numbered below SV122; the VMAX is the final entry. That is a structural quirk of the numbering, not a rarity upgrade, but it makes the SV122 the easiest Shining Fates VMAX to reference when shopping.

The visual difference matters for collectors. Where the standard Darkness Ablaze VMAX uses a deep black and purple palette, the Shining Fates version shifts to a grey-silver and lighter purple tonal shift that is visibly distinct in hand. The shiny coloring is the collecting angle here, not competitive relevance.

Raw SV122 copies list at $6.30 to $11.99. PSA 10 copies sit at $59.99 to $64.99. That 10x raw-to-PSA 10 gap is the grading question.

Shining Fates was a widely available set, so gem-mint copies are not rare. But Eternatus VMAX has a card border that holds edge wear clearly, so centering and corner inspection matter more than they do on typical holos if you are buying raw to grade.

PSA 9 copies at $30 split the difference if you want a graded example without the 10x premium.

The VMAX Premium Collection: The Sealed Option

Eternatus is one of a small number of non-Charizard, non-Pikachu Gen 8 Legendaries to receive a dedicated Premium Collection box.

The Eternatus VMAX Premium Collection includes the SWSH045 promo Eternatus VMAX, booster packs, and accessories. Sealed copies currently list at $174.94 to $218.75 depending on condition notes and seller. Most listings in the $174 to $180 range are sealed-only, ships-sealed shipments from established sellers, which is the standard sealed-market framing for this product.

The SWSH045 promo card inside is a full-art Eternatus VMAX with different artwork from the Darkness Ablaze version. It is exclusive to this box: there is no other way to acquire SWSH045 outside of the Premium Collection or secondary singles. Singles of the promo card itself have their own market separate from the sealed box.

The $175 to $218 range reflects a long out-of-print product from 2020 with a stable but unspectacular secondary market. It is not appreciating sharply. For sealed collectors who want a SWSH-era Legendary-themed box, it is the only Eternatus option.

The SV Gap and What It Means for Prices

No English SV main-series set has given Eternatus an ex card, Illustration Rare, or Special Illustration Rare treatment through September 2026.

For most popular characters, the SV ex treatment resets the price ceiling upward. Gardevoir ex SIR from Paldean Fates trades above $170, and Metagross received a Steven's Metagross ex SIR in Ascended Heroes.

Eternatus has neither. The Shining Fates SV122 PSA 10 at $64.99 is the practical collector ceiling for graded English singles until a future set changes that.

That ceiling is not low. It is just fixed until a future SV or 10th anniversary release gives the character an ex treatment. Buyers who want an Eternatus display piece today are working with a known maximum rather than speculating on future printings.

The Chinese Vivid Portrayals CS2b set featured Eternatus-themed boosters, and imported slim booster boxes list at $42 to $105 depending on configuration. These offer access to artwork not released in English, which is a parallel to the Japanese exclusive dynamic seen with other characters whose premium prints never crossed to the English market.

Which Tier to Target

Under $12: the Surging Sparks reverse holo or a raw Shining Fates SV122. Both are good display cards at different price points. The SV122 is the better collector piece given its visual distinction.

$30 to $65: a PSA 9 or PSA 10 Shining Fates SV122 is the most focused single-card collector play. It is the character's current practical ceiling as a graded English single and the shiny coloring makes it visually distinct from any other Eternatus card.

$115 to $175: a PSA 10 Darkness Ablaze standard VMAX or sealed Premium Collection. These are for collectors who want the home-set flagship or sealed product specifically. Both sit at stable secondary market prices with no obvious catalyst for short-term movement in either direction.
