Sword & Shield ETB vs Scarlet & Violet ETB: Which to Buy (2026)
By Dexhaul Team · October 12, 2026 · 6 min read
Two generations, one $49.99 launch price.
Buy the Scarlet & Violet ETB if you want the current era's opening box, one extra pack over the Sword & Shield version, and a lower entry point at today's secondary prices. Buy the Sword & Shield ETB if you are collecting by generation and want the box that brought V Pokémon to English TCG for the first time.
Both ETBs are out of print at MSRP. Both are available from independent sellers right now, with standard SV01 listings observed at $141–$165 and standard SWSH01 listings at $160–$199.99 in October 2026.

Where the Sword & Shield ETB wins
The opening of the V era
The Sword & Shield base set launched February 7, 2020 and introduced Pokémon V to English TCG. Zacian V and Zamazenta V were the first V Pokémon to exist in English. No prior booster set, collection, or promo had carried the mechanic before this box.
For collectors who organize sealed products by generational milestone, the SWSH01 ETB is the only way to own a sealed piece of that debut. Every VMAX and VSTAR that followed across the Sword & Shield era traces directly to this launch box.
A digital code card in every box
Every ETB released during the Sword & Shield era came with a code card redeemable in the Pokémon TCG Online digital game. The Scarlet & Violet era removed code cards entirely, starting with the very first SV set.
Sealed SWSH01 ETBs still contain unscratched, valid TCG Live codes today. Some collectors specifically track code-card-era products as a sealed format defined partly by that insert. If the code card matters to you as part of the sealed experience, the SWSH01 is the pick here.
Longer secondary market appreciation window
The SWSH01 ETB has a six-year head start on appreciation. Standard listings observed in October 2026 sit between $160 and $199.99, against the $49.99 original MSRP. The SV01 ETB is at $141–$165 after roughly three and a half years.
Neither number says anything about where prices go next: Dexhaul does not make price predictions. What the spread does show is that older sealed products from major era launches tend to move well clear of their original price after print runs close.
Where the Scarlet & Violet ETB wins
One extra pack at the same launch MSRP
The most straightforward difference between the two boxes is pack count. The Scarlet & Violet ETB ships with nine booster packs; the Sword & Shield ETB shipped with eight. Both launched at $49.99.
At launch, that extra pack made the SV01 ETB the better raw-value purchase at identical MSRP. Nine packs means nine chances at Tera ex cards, including Koraidon ex and Miraidon ex, the flagship cards confirmed by Serebii's Scarlet & Violet card database as the set's top-tier pulls.
The Pokémon Center exclusive exists only here
No Pokémon Center exclusive ETB was produced for the SWSH01 base set. The PC exclusive program for generation-launch ETBs began with Scarlet & Violet: both the Koraidon and Miraidon PC variants exist, observed at $259.99–$330 in October 2026.
The PC exclusive SV01 ETBs carry the same nine packs as the standard version. The premium reflects their distribution channel and the Pokémon Center-exclusive print on the box. For collectors who specifically target PC exclusives, the SV01 is the only option between these two sets.
The deciding question
Both boxes check off the same essentials: 65 card sleeves, 45 Energy cards, 6 damage dice, 1 coin-flip die, 2 acrylic condition markers, a player's guide, and a collector's box. The accessories are the same format. Neither standard ETB includes a promo card.
The choice comes down to what you are buying for.
Choose the Sword & Shield ETB if you collect by era and want the launch box from the V generation. At $160–$199.99 observed today, it costs a little more than the SV01, but you are paying for the closed print run and the debut significance. Choose the Scarlet & Violet ETB if you want the more accessible current-era launch box, one more pack per box, and access to the Pokémon Center exclusive variant. At $141–$165 observed today, it is the lower buy-in for a generation-launch ETB. If you are also comparing other SV ETBs, the Pokémon GO ETB vs Standard SV ETB guide covers another in-era choice.
Gift buyers: the SV01 ETB is the easier recommendation. It is more recent, opens with nine packs, and the Koraidon/Miraidon sleeve variants make the unboxing visually distinct. The Sword & Shield ETB is the better gift only if the recipient specifically collects the SwSh era sealed.

Did the Scarlet & Violet ETB come with a code card?
No. The Pokémon TCG removed digital code cards from all products starting with Scarlet & Violet (SV01) in 2023. Sword & Shield era ETBs, including the SWSH01, included a code card for Pokémon TCG Online.
Is there a Pokémon Center version of the Sword & Shield ETB?

Which should I buy as a gift?
The Scarlet & Violet ETB is the easier gift choice for most recipients: it is more current, opens with nine packs, and sits at a slightly lower observed price today. The Sword & Shield ETB is better only if the recipient specifically collects the SwSh era or wants the launch box from the V generation.
