Kingdra ex and Greninja ex Special Illustration Collection (2024): Contents and MSRP
By Dexhaul Team · October 9, 2026 · 5 min read
Each box holds five Scarlet & Violet: Shrouded Fable booster packs, one special illustration rare-style promo card featuring the titular Pokémon ex in Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock) artwork, and two evolution-line foil promos. Both collections launched August 2, 2024, alongside the rest of the Shrouded Fable product line.
The two boxes are companion pieces: same contents formula, same art style, different Water-type evolution families. One centers on Kingdra ex with Horsea and Seadra foils; the other focuses on Greninja ex with Froakie and Frogadier foils.

What's inside each box
| Item | Kingdra ex SIC | Greninja ex SIC |
|---|---|---|
| Booster packs | 5 × Shrouded Fable | 5 × Shrouded Fable |
| Featured promo | Kingdra ex (SIR-style, Ukiyo-e art) | Greninja ex (SIR-style, Ukiyo-e art) |
| Evolution foil 1 | Horsea (foil promo) | Froakie (foil promo) |
| Evolution foil 2 | Seadra (foil promo) | Frogadier (foil promo) |
| Release date | August 2, 2024 | August 2, 2024 |
The Shrouded Fable expansion is built around the Loyal Three and Pecharunt ex. Both Special Illustration Collections pull from that same 64-card base set, so every pack you open has a real chance at the set's chase cards.
MSRP and observed prices
The official press release does not list an MSRP for either collection. Observed storefront prices as of October 9, 2026 are:
| Collection | Low observed price | High observed price | Price per pack (at low) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdra ex SIC | ~$190 USD | ~$260 USD | ~$38 per pack |
| Greninja ex SIC | ~$105 USD | ~$235 USD | ~$21 per pack |
The Greninja ex version consistently lists lower than Kingdra ex across sellers. Kingdra is a less common Water-type in the main series, and its Ukiyo-e promo carries more collector demand. Both prices reflect the secondary market: these products launched in 2024 and are no longer at retail.
How these compare to other Shrouded Fable products
| Product | Packs | Promo highlight | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingdra ex or Greninja ex SIC | 5 | SIR-style Ukiyo-e promo + 2 evo foils | Collectors wanting the promo |
| Shrouded Fable PC ETB | 11 | 2 × Pecharunt foil promos (PC logo variant) | Pack volume, PC exclusivity |
| Shrouded Fable Mini Tin | 2 | Art card + sticker sheet | Budget entry, display art |
If you want the most packs per box, the ETB is the clearer route. These Special Illustration Collections are promo-first purchases: you're buying the Ukiyo-e card with packs as a bonus, not the other way around.
What makes the Ukiyo-e promos worth collecting
Ukiyo-e is the Japanese woodblock print tradition: flat color planes, bold outlines, stylized natural motifs. The Shrouded Fable SIC promos adapt that aesthetic to Pokémon ex artwork, giving each card a distinctly hand-crafted look that stands apart from every other Scarlet and Violet SIR in the same binder page.
Both promos carry the same rarity tier: Special Illustration Rare (two gold stars) in their rarity treatment, though technically these are numbered promo cards rather than pulled from the base set. That distinction matters for set collectors: Kingdra ex 12/64 and 13/64 are the standard set versions, while the boxed promo is a separate card entirely.
That separation is the unique value here. Neither promo appears in booster packs. The only way to own the Ukiyo-e Kingdra ex or Greninja ex promo is to buy the matching box.
Kingdra ex or Greninja ex: which to buy
They are identical in structure. The choice comes down to which Pokémon you collect and which promo you want in your binder.
Buy the Kingdra ex version if
You collect Water-type or Dragon-type Pokémon, want the rarer of the two promos on the secondary market, or are building a Horsea evolution line display. Kingdra is a less common TCG subject compared to Greninja, so its promo commands higher demand from set completionists.
Buy the Greninja ex version if
You collect Greninja (one of the most popular Kalos starters), want the lowest entry price into either box, or need both evolution stages (Froakie, Frogadier) in a single purchase. The Greninja ex SIC regularly lists $50-$80 lower than the Kingdra version as of October 2026.
Skip both if you only want Shrouded Fable packs. The Pokémon Center ETB gives you more than twice the pack count and a dedicated box for storing the set: better value purely on the pack math.
A gift option for Shrouded Fable collectors
These boxes make a focused holiday gift for the collector who already owns the Shrouded Fable ETB. The promo cannot be obtained from booster packs, and the Ukiyo-e art is instantly recognizable as a shelf display piece. The Greninja ex version fits a tighter budget; the Kingdra ex version works as a premium pick.

Frequently asked questions
How many packs are in the Kingdra ex Special Illustration Collection?
Five booster packs, all from the Scarlet & Violet: Shrouded Fable set. The same count applies to the Greninja ex version. Source: the official Pokémon press release.
What is the difference between the Kingdra ex and Greninja ex Special Illustration Collections?
The promo card and its matching evolution foils are different. The Kingdra ex version includes Horsea and Seadra foils; the Greninja version includes Froakie and Frogadier foils. The pack count and release date are identical.
Is the Kingdra ex SIC promo the same as the Kingdra ex in the Shrouded Fable set?
No. The Kingdra ex cards numbered 12/64 and 13/64 are base set pulls; the promo in the Special Illustration Collection is a separately numbered card with Ukiyo-e woodblock art that cannot be obtained from booster packs.
When did the Shrouded Fable Special Illustration Collections release?
Both launched August 2, 2024, the same day as the full Shrouded Fable expansion in the United States.
Are these collections still at retail price?
No. These products launched in 2024 and are no longer stocked at standard retail. Prices you see today reflect independent shops sourcing from their own inventory, and they vary considerably by seller.
