Altaria and Swablu Before Legends Z-A: The Dragon/Fairy Collector's Window

Altaria has a legitimate reason to be on every collector's radar right now.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A arrives October 16, set entirely in Lumiose City, and Altaria is confirmed in the game: the same Dragon/Flying Pokémon that turns Dragon/Fairy upon Mega Evolution, the first Dragon/Fairy type in Pokémon history.

That typing history matters for collectors. Fairy was introduced in Gen 6 specifically to counter Dragon types. Mega Altaria is the only Pokémon that gained the very typing designed as Dragon's weakness, making it a deliberate paradox in the lore and a structurally unusual card in the TCG.

The product range runs from $0.75 to well over $900 graded. Here's how the ladder maps out now, before October 16 pulls more buyers into the search.

The Swablu and Altaria Plush Range

Swablu is one of the more plush-forward designs in Generation III: a round, cotton-cloud bird that translates well to soft toys. Collectors can start here without touching the TCG at all.

The Pokémon Fit line puts Swablu at $20 (Yeti Gaming) and Altaria at $19 (Ichiba Japan), both in their compact, display-friendly format. These are the entry points.

The Altaria All Star Collection plush (PP10) sits at $19–$25 at Ichiba Japan and Collector Store. Larger and more display-focused than the Fit, it's the standard Altaria plush format across most of the secondary market.

Mega Altaria has its own dedicated plush formats, which is notable. Most Mega Evolution Pokémon do not. The Mega Altaria Plush at $47 (Ichiba Japan) and the Mega Altaria All Star Collection at $80 (Fragmented Nostalgia) both show the spread: same Mega form, different scale and format, neither one chasing the other's buyer.

The Pokémon Center Mega Altaria Poké Plush reaches $109 at the top of the Western importer range. For context, the Altaria Life-size plush (used) is listed at over $1,000 on the secondary market, which tells you how rare that format is. The active collector window is the $20–$109 spread, not the life-size ceiling.

The Paradox Rift Ladder: Three Cards, One Character

Scarlet and Violet: Paradox Rift (2023) gave Altaria three separate cards at three separate price tiers. This is the cleanest way to understand the modern Altaria TCG market, and the spread is wider than most single-set character prints.

Altaria ex 253/182 Paradox Rift Special Illustration Rare

$50.03 USD

The Double Rare 140/182 starts below $1 raw (Kooky Collectibles at $0.75). The Ultra Rare 232/182 is in the $4–$6 range. The Special Illustration Rare 253/182, with its above-set numbering and full-scene art, runs $50–$65 raw at multiple sellers.

That's roughly a 65–85x spread between entry and SIR for the same Pokémon in the same set. The gameplay text on 140/182 and 253/182 is identical. The entire gap is the illustration treatment and above-set positioning.

A BGS 9 copy of the SIR has sold at $173. PSA 10 reaches $280 in recent sales. The grading multiple on this card is meaningful, but the raw floor at $50–$65 is where most collectors operate.

Fates Collide: The M Altaria EX Arc

XY: Fates Collide (2016) is where Mega Altaria entered the TCG in dedicated form. The set contains three relevant prints, all currently in stock.

M Altaria EX (Full Art) 121/124 XY Fates Collide · $25.35 USD

The Ultra Rare 69/124 is the cheapest Mega EX entry at $9.95–$17. The Full Art 121/124 runs $19–$30 raw at multiple sellers. Both are within reach for most collectors.

The Full Art carries an unusual grading cliff: raw copies at $19–$30, PSA 10 copies sold at $900.

That is a 30–47x grading premium, significantly wider than most XY-era Full Arts.

The likely explanation is population. Fates Collide had a smaller print run than flagship XY sets, and the PSA 10 grading bar for Full Arts is tight on centering and surface condition. Low pop means less competition for buyers who want the grade, and more upside for collectors who submit raw copies today.

The Radiant Collection Card and the Vintage Path

Altaria RC24/RC32 XY Generations Radiant Collection

Altaria RC24/RC32 XY: Generations Radiant Collection

$24.55 USD

XY: Generations was the 20th Anniversary set, released in 2016 alongside Fates Collide. Critically, Generations packs were only distributed inside special gift sets and collector's albums, not sold as standalone booster boxes. Every RC card in the 32-card Radiant Collection subset carries that distribution premium.

Altaria RC24/RC32 trades at $18–$25 despite being an Uncommon. The pink sparkle foiling on the RC subset is distinctive, and the distribution constraint means print runs were lower than any standard set from the same era. That pattern holds across other RC cards with established collector bases.

For vintage buyers, the EX Deoxys (2005) Altaria Holo Rare 1/107 lists at $81–$85 raw at multiple sellers. The EX Dragon Frontiers (2006) delta species Altaria ex 90/101 reaches CA$124–$140. These are the pre-Mega vintage cards for the character, and both are currently in stock.

The Hidden Fates Shiny Vault also gives Altaria a shiny treatment: SV77/SV94 Altaria GX at $29 from Hobbiesville. This card sits between the RC premium and the Fates Collide Full Art in price, useful for collectors building a complete alternate-treatment set for the character.

The Legends Z-A Window

Altaria appears in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, which releases October 16. The game is set in Lumiose City, the Kalos region capital, where Altaria was a native encounter in XY.

That matters for two reasons. First, narrative attention typically lifts search interest in Pokémon featured prominently in new games. Second, Mega Altaria is one of the Mega Evolutions with in-game counterparts in Legends Z-A, which means it has a Kalos lore anchor that will be reinforced at launch.

The current product inventory is solid across every format: plush from $20 entry to $109 Pokémon Center, TCG from $0.75 Double Rare to $65 SIR, and both vintage EX-era cards and the Fates Collide Full Art in stock at fixed prices. The window before October 16 is when that inventory is calmest. Post-launch demand spikes are unpredictable; pre-launch availability is not.
