Inkay and Malamar Collector's Guide 2026: The Upside-Down Evolution, a TCG-Only Mega, and Every Entry Point

Inkay is the only Pokémon in the franchise that evolves through a physical action tied to the real world.

Level it to 30 in Pokémon X and Y while holding the Nintendo 3DS upside down, and Inkay evolves into Malamar. There is no held item, no friendship threshold, no trade, no time-of-day condition. The game reads the console's gyroscope and responds to how you are physically holding the hardware.

That design choice reflects the character's Pokédex lore directly. Inkay emits flashing light from its body to disorient prey and to lull them into a hypnotic state. The upside-down evolution mimics the sensory inversion at the core of the creature's biology. The mechanic is not cosmetic; it is the mechanic.

This is worth establishing before you look at the TCG, because Mega Malamar ex carries a version of the same inversion logic. It is a card that exists without a game behind it.

The Character: Dark/Psychic and Built Backwards

Inkay (#686) is a Dark/Psychic type introduced in Pokémon X and Y in 2013. It is a small squid-like creature with light-emitting organs arranged in a circular pattern. The organs flash when Inkay tires or feels threatened, which disorients both predators and targets.

Malamar (#687) is the evolution at level 30. The visual inversion is complete: Inkay becomes Malamar by flipping entirely, with the tentacle arrangement inverted and the body plan reversed. In-game lore describes Malamar as capable of forcing opponents to act against their own will through hypnosis, making it one of the few Pokémon whose Pokédex entries describe it as outright dangerous to humans.

Malamar has the Contrary ability, which flips all stat changes. Moves that normally lower the user's stats become buffs, and moves that normally boost the opponent become nerfs. Superpower, which drops Attack and Defense on use, instead raises both when used by a Contrary Malamar. This makes it a legitimate competitive threat in the right format.

Both Inkay and Malamar are Kalos natives. Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set entirely in Lumiose City within Kalos, launches October 16, 2026. That places this evolution line inside a 16-day collector discovery window.

TCG Arc: From XY Floor to the Phantom Forces EX Era

Inkay debuted in the TCG in XY Base Set (2014) as a pair of commons, both at floor price. Malamar debuted in the same set as 76/146 (Rare Reverse Holo) and 77/146 (Holo Rare), priced at CA$0.75 to $1.00 from current sellers.

The XY Base entry is the floor of the collector arc for both characters. It is cheap, genuinely in print from 2014, and accessible from most TCG singles sellers at sub-$2.

Phantom Forces (XY04, November 2014) is where the EX tier began. Malamar EX 58/119 is the base EX at $3.00 to $3.48. Malamar EX 115/119 is the Full Art Ultra Rare format: a full-bleed illustration, above-set numbering, and a $21.00 price from Geek & Co. as of September 2026.

The gap between 58/119 ($3.48) and 115/119 ($21.00) is entirely the art treatment premium. Both cards have the same attacks and stats. The only variable is the illustration format.

The Competitive Peak: Psychic Recharge in Sun and Moon

Malamar's second arc is a competitive one. In the Sun and Moon era, Malamar FM 51/131 (Forbidden Light, 2018) introduced the Psychic Recharge ability: once per turn, Malamar could attach a Psychic Energy from the discard pile to one of your Benched Psychic-type Pokémon. That ability made Malamar the standard energy acceleration engine for Ultra Necrozma GX, Necrozma GX, and Espeon and Deoxys GX TAG TEAM decks throughout the 2018 to 2020 format window.

Any deck running Psychic attackers ran three or four Malamar on the bench. It was a format-defining support Pokémon for two consecutive seasons, which is unusual for a non-Legendary Psychic type.

The SM117 Prerelease Promo is the most recognizable competitive-era Malamar in the secondary market. It is a holofoil promo distributed exclusively at Sun and Moon Pre-Release events, stamped with the Pre-Release logo, and available from current sellers at $7.00 to $9.00 USD or CA$8.99.

The SM117 promo is a finitely distributed card: only players who attended a physical Pre-Release event could receive it. Current secondary market prices are stable rather than falling, which reflects the fixed supply.

The Silver Tempest Trainer Gallery (SWSH12, 2022) added Malamar TG06/TG30 as an Ultra Rare tier card in the Trainer Gallery subset. This is a full-art format within the gallery, above-set numbered, and currently available at $3.00 from Cherry Collectables. It represents the most accessible special-art Malamar currently in the market, and its low price reflects supply abundance rather than diminished interest in the character.

Mega Malamar ex: The Card That Exists Without a Game

Mega Evolution was introduced as a game mechanic in Pokémon X and Y in 2013. The canonical Mega Evolutions from that era include Mega Charizard, Mega Mewtwo, Mega Gengar, and 46 others. Malamar is not among them. Malamar has no canonical Mega Evolution form in XY, ORAS, or any subsequent mainline game.

ME06 Storm Emeralda (the Japanese name for the English set releasing as Delta Reign on November 6, 2026) created one anyway. Mega Malamar ex 094/076 is, as of September 2026, the only official Mega Malamar design in franchise history. The TCG did not adapt an existing game design. It invented the form.

This places Mega Malamar ex in the same category as Mega Golurk ex and Mega Zygarde ex from earlier ME sets: Pokémon that received a Mega form on a card before any game gave them one, if any ever does. The design is original to the TCG, not a visual reference to a known game encounter.

The SR tier of the card (094/076, above-set numbered Super Rare) is currently priced at $3.75 from the Japanese import seller TSURUOKAYA. This is a pre-EN-release price. Delta Reign EN launches November 6, and EN singles markets typically set a new price floor in the first week after release. Whether the SR tier holds at $3.75 or settles higher or lower depends on how collector demand distributes across the 22 ME06 above-set cards once English product is in hand.

At $3.75 now, you are buying the only Mega Malamar design that exists at a price set before most English-speaking collectors have pulled the card.

Plush and Merchandise

Both Inkay and Malamar have Pokémon Fit plush from the Japanese Pokémon Center line. Inkay's Fit is $18.00 from Ichiba Japan. Malamar's Fit is $22.00 from the same seller.

The $4 gap between pre-evolution and evolution is smaller than most Fit pairs in the same Pokédex range, which reflects a narrow demand differential. Both characters have consistent merchandise presence without being in the top-tier plush demand bracket occupied by Pikachu, Eevee, and the starters.

The pair keychain from the Pokédex metal charm series covers both #686 Inkay and #687 Malamar on a single product at $5.14 from Ichiba Japan. This is the only current format that places both characters together on one item, making it the most cost-efficient single purchase for a collector who wants the evolution line represented.
