Pokémon Legends: Z-A Physical vs Digital One Year Later: What to Buy in October 2026

Get the Switch 2 Edition physical cartridge if you own a Switch 2 and want native enhanced performance with no additional purchases. Get Switch 1 digital if you want the cleanest digital upgrade path or play primarily on Switch 1.

One year has passed since Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched on October 16, 2025 for both Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The question now is not whether to buy, but which edition and which format. Prices have moved, a physical bundle pairing the Switch 2 Edition with the Mega Dimension DLC has appeared at retailers, and Switch 1 copies have dropped below MSRP at some resellers.

This guide is for Dexhaul readers who are independent of Nintendo and Pokémon Company; links in this article go to independent shops found on our search engine.

Where physical wins

Switch 1 physical is now under MSRP at resellers

The standard Switch 1 launch MSRP was $59.99 USD. A year on, reseller copies have slipped below that. Some independent shops list it at $39.99–$47 USD (observed October 12, 2026), while digital downloads remain at the eShop launch price.

That gap is real. If you own a Switch 2 and want to play Legends Z-A without paying the Switch 2 Edition premium, a Switch 1 physical disc is backward compatible with Switch 2 hardware. Your save data carries over; the game runs.

The Switch 2 Edition physical is complete at purchase

Buying the Switch 2 Edition physical cartridge ($55–$79 observed October 12, 2026) means the Switch 2 enhancements are on the disc. No separate upgrade purchase needed. Switch 1 digital buyers who later want those enhancements have to return to the eShop for a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade.

The Lumiose Steelbook is physical only

A European steelbook edition, titled the Lumiose Edition, was sold as a pre-order exclusive. It pairs the Switch 1 cartridge with a premium steel case themed to Lumiose City.

Secondary market listings place it around €33.90 (observed October 12, 2026). No digital equivalent exists; it is a display item only.

Where digital wins

No disc to manage

Digital copies are account-tied. You cannot lose them, scratch them, or leave them in the wrong console. For Switch 2 owners who keep one console at home and another portable, digital is seamless.

Instant access

Download begins immediately after purchase. There is no wait for shipping or a trip to pick up the disc. For gift purchases where someone wants to play the same day, digital works without coordinating a physical handoff.

Clean upgrade path for Switch 2 Edition

Switch 1 digital buyers who acquire a Switch 2 later can add the Switch 2 Edition upgrade from the eShop without reselling a disc. Physical Switch 1 owners face the same upgrade cost but are left with a cartridge they may not want to keep.

The deciding question

Four clear decision paths cover most buyers.

On Switch 2, want the best version without extra purchases: Switch 2 Edition physical ($55–$79 observed) is the call. The enhancements are on the cartridge. No second eShop transaction needed.

On Switch 1 only, or not yet on Switch 2: Switch 1 digital ($59.99 MSRP from Nintendo eShop) is clean. If you ever get a Switch 2, you can add the Switch 2 Edition upgrade then. Switch 1 physical is fine too, especially if reseller price is noticeably lower than eShop.

Want everything in one physical package: the Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension physical bundle includes both. It is listed as a pre-order at retailers and observed at $99.99 USD (October 12, 2026). It is the only way to own both the Switch 2 Edition disc and the Mega Dimension content code in a single retail box.

Already own either version and want Mega Dimension: the Mega Dimension standalone code-in-box is the cheapest route.

Mega Dimension: what it adds

The Mega Dimension DLC launched in two waves. The Holo-X and Holo-Y apparel items arrived with the base game on October 16, 2025. The story content and 19 new Mega Evolutions released December 10, 2025, including Lucario Z, Garchomp Z, Darkrai, Raichu X, and Raichu Y, among others.

The Mega Dimension content is substantial for fans of the expanded Mega Evolution roster. For players who are not focused on completing the Mega Dex, the base game's 26 new Megas plus the returning 48 from X and Y cover most of the roster. Buying Mega Dimension is a genuine choice, not a requirement to finish the game.
